      @Frugal Rock,
I think it's cake disguised as bread for cake addicts to feel good about themselves.

These are delicious when toasted and you layer on butter.

“With generous caf” - what is a caf?

      • I think it's meant to be "cafe" not caf?

There is nothing 'Gourmet' about this.

Real Brioche bread has ~20% minimum (can be up to 80% dependent on taste / use) butter content which together with the egg yolk gives it the colour, texture & taste.

This product is listing ~2.5% Butterfat with rest made up of 'Vegetable Shortening', and added colouring (Carotene) to give the appearance.

There is no minimum amount of butter.

Butter and eggs are used to determined the texture of the bread.

Your percentages are bakers percentages, not overall percent.

No brioche starts with 80% of the ingredients as butter and the remaining 20% as flour, eggs, liquid. Those ingredients would make something but it would not be Brioche!

      • +2

Yes, but 2.5% Butterfat with rest made up of vegetable oil is just plain rubbish, much akin to Cadbury replacing Coca butter with it in their Chocolate.

I would like to give this a -ve vote. But it wouldn't be fair because it is a good deal.

I just don't like this deal because my wife has fallen in love with this bread, and we now never have any regular bread in the house, just this damn brioche.

You are unable to go buy normal bread yourself ?

  • +2

Thanks OP at this price worth trying once to see how it is… wouldn't have bothered otherwise lol.

    • It's bloody addictive. Been hooked on this since past 2 years…

  • $7 for a loaf of bread?!

You are not from Sydney are you?

      • What is that mean?

      • Nah mate, regional NSW.

    • +$10 petrol (in Sydney at least) = $17

It makes smashed avo seem okay.

  • I think fat content is high in brioche style btead

    • That's what makes it brioche.

  • Ok, so this one is made in France. So is the one sold at ALDI.

Question: who they manage to get them fresh from France? Do they freeze them once they are baked in France? Just curious.

    • +1

      Yes they do.

If there are none on the shelf and you ask the staff for some they will give you frozen ones from storage.

I did a summer pudding on Christmas Day with this and it was fantastic. Also, for fairy bread at kids parties, use this instead, YUM YUM YUM.

The only real brioche is the one from Jocelyn's Provisions on James Street in Brissy.

Top quality ingredients, and filled with lots and lots of real Belgian chocolate.

    A highly sinful experience!

I bought some at full price last week just to give it a go. We tried it fresh and toasted.

It's interesting, sweet, and a bit spongy in texture. I felt contradictory: as though I could both eat half a loaf and yet was already sick of it.

I liked it as a once off, but it's no substitute for plain old bread. I regretted having not picked up a cheap loaf of white bread when I bought the brioche. Instead we just had to eat the sweet bread.

It burns easier than white bread, so turn your toaster dial down a bit lower than normal.

Woolies Brioche would probably be great in a bread pudding or for cinnamon toast. It's not a good substitute for regular white bread.

Is there anything unhealthier on the shelves?

    • Spread a generous amount of nutella on it.
