870

UPDATE: It's now active online (thanks whitelie!)

Just got the Officeworks catalogue today and spotted this, which was a very popular deal previously.

Catalogue says "Printed for 27/12/18. Prices valid until 12/02/19". Not sure if this will be in-store only, but I guess we will find out on the 27th.

    NICE!

In terms of longevity, is the 3TB better than the 2TB?

    Seagate haters need not reply.

      get a WD

    • +1

      I'd say about the same

in 25 years i have never had a hard drive fail. they become obsolete due to size first. some came close but were retired.

You are a lucky hard disk owner!!.. I'd say my ratio of failure is 1 in 8. And of those that fail, 50% are still in warranty.

    • Well, 3TB and larger portable size external HDDs are likely to use SMR technology (or a mix of PMR and SMR) compared to 2TB or below. That's why you only see a better $/GB ratio for 3TB or above.

2TB is too small for me nowadays. Even 3TB isn't big enough for me.

      • I have 1TB, so next move is 2TB for me. But if a 3TB is just as stable than I'd just grab that.

      • As above, all 'portable' drives that are above 2TB+, are generally SMR only.

The limit of PMR drives is/was 2TB, for the 7/9mm drive laptop standard.

And SMR are fine for store and keep files (media) i.e. mostly just read only access.

But they are very slow to write to, so they are not great for constant regular backups.

Writing anything above a gig, to an SMR, takes a long… time… (overnight ok, but several tb takes ages!)

        -

Note, there are a few 9mm 2TB drives that are PMR. They are still available on ebay, as a 9mm drive only. Which can be put into a 2.5mm external case (PM if interested).

But, best way for regular backups is a external 3.5 inch dock, with 'any size' 7200rpm 3.5 inch drive (as the high rpm drives, are still generally not smr).

  • Good price, I missed out on some similarly priced 4TB… i 'need' 4TB.

  • +3

Damn this is amazing price for 3TB portable. Especially since these do not have the adapters soldered onto the the hard drive

    • +1

you mean they are shuckable?? 2.5 or 3.5 ?

      • +2

I'm talking about portable 2.5" ones, same as these

Edit: just looked up what shuckable meant, lol yep, the 2.5" 3tbs are shuckable, same as the 4tb

        https://mattgadient.com/2018/01/27/how-to-shuck-the-seagate-…

As far as I know, you can remove the hard drive of all versions of Seagate expansions portable (I've got a few 1 and 2tb ones). Only issue is some of them are taller than the 12mm limit (like the link specifically says it is 15mm and might not fit game consoles)

        • as usual the nas's 2 tb drives become 3 tb ones

    Will this work for ps4?

    • +2

Yes, when you first plug it in your just need to go into settings and format it for the PS4.
Note that this format will not allow you to use it with any other type of devices such as TVs, PCs etc.

    • I think any HDD can now be used for ps4 (externally) .
Did you mean internally though ? Thats another story. Some are very easy, some are hard, and many are impossible (to take apart and install internally in ps4).
I've broken apart a portable hard drive, and installed into my ps4 pro. I even found info saying the same model portable HDD can contain different actual drives inside. The main issue is that many are soldiered in these days, and of course need to make sure its right physical size for ps4 (if you want to install internally)

    • Ah, they must've only just updated it; it was showing $179 earlier.

I have had 4 Seagate drives and 4 WDs. All Seagate failed, WDs still going strong. On my experience no matter the price i won't be going Seagate again

    • +3

Its not all the same, I had 2 WDs fail, but not single Segate. At the same time I know a friend who had a Segate fail on him.. So I think its a hit and a miss with most HDDs.

      • Agree can be a bit of luck with these things or bad batches etc. Just from my experience i have found all the WDs (got green, blue and red) to work really well and depending on the data, worth the little extra

        • really? not even WD GREEN? it's notorious…

          • +1

@alexGoodwin: Just used it as a spare 2nd hdd in the desktop and hasn't had any issue touch wood! I must be lucky by the sounds of it lol

Like everything in life, sometimes things fail/die. Most of the time this isn't a reputation of the brand.

Seagate, WD or whatever you pick has quite a small chance of failing but it could happen.

  • Are there things that increase its likelihood to die on me that should be avoided? E.g. not safely ejecting IDK

    • +11

A little dude from Chinatown once told me things to avoid:

      • Don't drop them
      • Don't feed them after midnight
      • Don't expose them to bright light.

        • Do not let it get wet
        • Was it the same little dude from Chinatown 😂😂😂 just joking

  • Thanks OP. Ordered one and just picked up

  • Are the 3.5" WD Red hard drives better for use with a Nvidia Shield?

    • Would like to know thoughts on this too as I want to buy this drive for a Nvidia Shield.

  • looks like the exact same deal as 4 months ago

lets see what pops up on boxing day.

"lets see what pops up on boxing day." - That's what she said!

  • I bought one of these under the previous deal. Be aware that it is much thicker than most 2.5" hard drives; I wonder whether it is actually two hard drives in a single enclosure.

  • Are these drives 5400rpm?
Tossing up between a 2tb firecuda and this. Speed is more important for me.
