I don't understand why one would need to use a paid app like that? What's the benefit compared to say, tripadvisor?

  Because nothing is free and you're either posting with your privacy or is being paid for by those that are being reviewed. TripAdvisor is the latter and quite biased in a lot of areas now. I'm not sure if Tripwolf has its own biases but at least there's a chance they might be independent as you pay for information.
