    Worth more than my car

Could become target for car thieves because this is what they want as the most valuable item inside the car ready to grab

I think I;ll stick with my Xiaomi 70mai for 1/25th of the price

    • +11

And 1/25th of the quality too

      • You get what you pay :)

        • Sometimes you pay more than you get.

There are very nice dashcams using Ambarella A12 chipset and decent lens module that only cost around $100.

BlackVue is certainly very nice, but does it actually worth that price?

        70mai is 1080p. 4k is 2160p or only 2 times the resolution.

        • +9

actually, it is 4 times the resolution. As 4k has 4x 1080p frames in it. you have to measure both vertically and horizontally

  • Anyone know how much Autobarn charge for fitting?

    • Autobarn quoted me $160

      • Is this something that an reasonably techy person can diy?

Depends on how you want it installed. I believe the easiest is just to run cables yourself around the windscreen and down to a cigarette lighter.

If you want to use things like parking mode you will need the power magic pro accessory so it draws directly from the car battery but with safeguards to stop your battery going flat. This you would probably want to be professionally done.

@IceCreamBandit: I've managed to hardwire my dashcam in three different cars. Hardest but is finding the right fuses to tap, or else it's very easy after watching a video on installation.

Hiding the wires is generally some zip ties, or pulling some panels apart.

@IceCreamBandit: The magic battery is a good option if you don't want to wire to the cars battery, as there is always risk it may kill the car battery.

The magic battery is a battery pack that you install say under your seat. Takes 1hr to charge while driving and Will last 10hrs.

If I can do it, anyone can. It's really easy to install. The main thing is to get the camera in the perfect position.

          • @Dreamcast: Thanks for the replies everyone! I’m comfortable with popping panels to run cables so with the magic power brink thing I should be good.

  • You also need to add, over the long term:
    Installation costs
Cost of a good heavy duty microSD card

Get the 16gb ver at $559, wait for Samsung High Endurance 128gb sale (around $50), and DIY installation cable (too easy).

      • “wait for Samsung High Endurance 128gb sale (around $50)”

…ha, no. Certainly not in the short term.
$53 is miles below the next lowest price it has ever been. You will likely be waiting a year or more before it gets anywhere near this level again. If you can demonstrate otherwise by all means go ahead. By the way I got 3 at that price - 2 are in service and 1 is a backup in case I get a failure. Killer deal.

        • The 64gb can still be found for $42 which is still a lot cheaper than the blackvue card. I wish I spotted the Newegg deal earlier, great buy

    • Amazing video.

It's hard to justify the price bump to 4K when considering the negatives.

LPR would be the sole reason to pay more for it, IMO.

      • Like DR750S, DR900S does 60fps 1080P too.

    look for my comment https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/419768

…got the 128gb card already…now got the top of the line dashcam…nice !

    thanks for the post

now this is still way over price, I have been using $200 dash cam for years and still haven't caught anything that worth $200 ;)

    • These are probably more for luxury cars, I have a cheap one right now so I'm going to get this so it's less noticable and looks better.

My last car was written off and the other guy tried to say I ran the red when it was him, luckily I had my dashcam so there was 0 doubt who was at fault. His insurance tried to get me to pay $4k

  • Thanks! I’m glad I created an alert for this.

  • $734.25 now
