    • Is woolworths not going to be stocking any homebrew stuff in the future or something?

      • The cans I got from a different WW all expire in Jan 2019

        • Wouldn't be using that… must have been on the shelf for about 18 months already.

          • @ssquid: I think its mostly the yeast packet that goes bad. Stuff in cans last practically forever

      • They've introduced their own Woolworths brand (not the homebrand stuff, that's really old).

        • I saw that on the shelf of my local Woolies and assume its the same stuff but just a new redesign of the label.

They should give this stuff away for free. Anything more than nothing is too much for this absolute crap.

    • Nah, you just need to learn how to brew a decent beer!!!

Use these packs with the left overs of coopers pale ale, or micro brewery yeast. Totally different beast.

  • Brimbank(deer park) cleared there's last month…

    Homebrand Lager $3.70

    lol

    • Actually makes a pretty good lawnmower beer if you use DME and a good lager yeast. A partial boil with some cheap grains would make it even better! Cheers.

There's still cans they are trying to sell for $2 at Woolworths Macquarie (or were as of a few days ago) - the Coopers cleared out quickly but no-one wants the Homebrand.

  • I chuck two cans of the Homebrew lager mix in with some added hops and it makes a cheap swill that is ok to drink. It's certainly no worse than the mainstream beers people drink….

    • It's certainly no worse than the mainstream beers people drink….

      That's not saying much…

    • chuck two cans of the Homebrew lager mix in

I'm confused. Why not just chuck in one can of Cooper's? It's cheaper and would most likely taste better.

      • I meant to type Homebrand not Homebrew.

I also don't like brewing with simple sugars, I always brew with malt. So using two cans is a cheap way to do that given the price of these, plus I've usually done it when I ran out of canned malt from the Home brew store.

Obviously you do end up with twice as bitter a beer but that's why I add some fruitier finishing hops to balance it out.

The other thing is the yeast is light on in the Homebrand kits, so using two cans gives you twice the yeast to get it going….

        • My point still stands.

2 Homebrand cans are more expensive than one Cooper's can. Than you have to spend more counteracting the bitterness and getting the yeast going.

          • @pennypincher98: No your point doesn't stand, because you don't brew with just one Coopers can! You have to add your fermentables to it. Dex is about $4, Coopers BE1 $6 and Coopers BE2 $7 but as I said, I don't like brewing with simple sugars, I use malt as it gives a much better ale. Can of malt is around the $12 mark.

So at normal pricing you are looking at $18 for two Homebrand cans or $28 for Coopers APA and malt. Oh and where I am now, it's a 2.5hr round trip and $30 of petrol to get the malt, as opposed to Woolies being down the road….

Cost of hops is about $4/packet and normally I add finishing hops to all of my beers.

As for the bitterness, I occasionally like to have a bitter beer anyway. They finishing hops just adds a bit more character and makes it more interesting.

As for your comments on the yeast, not sure what you are on about. You don't spend anymore getting it going in a toucan brew, you simply have 2x packs which helps get a good fermentation going.

I'm going to guess you don't actually home brew? Experimenting with different products is half the fun when doing home brew….

            • @stewy:

I'm going to guess you don't actually home brew?

I do actually. I add BE2 to it - got a shitload for $2 (1kg pack) and just a kg of regular sugar.
Occasionally I add dextrose but not always.

Bottom line: I home brew to save money. Spending $30+ making it kind of makes it less appealing. I understand many people homebrew to customise their taste but I'm not one of them.

Sure my home brew isn't as good as a store bought but it's much cheaper. I can say the same with coffee.

  • Yawn…
The first post of these said "based on comments appears to be nationwide". Why are we still posting individual brew clearances?

    Cheapest yet

Have you checked all the other clearances making sure none are cheaper?
