What a rip off, not sure why this plan is not unlimited calling?

    • +4

not sure it's a rip off mate. this is a pretty great deal for parents who need to give their kids a phone for emergencies.

you could say that $500 as a limit is pretty fair. it's also good to teach kids restraint with usage of the phone. $10 a month is pretty good imho.

      • not sure about comparable deals tho.

        • +1

Amaysim has a $10 a month plan but with the following notes:

          • Billing cycle is 28 days, as opposed to the normal 30. So that means in a 12 month period, you will end up paying an extra $10 in phone bill
          • It's Unlimited calls also with 1GB data
          • According to Nocure if you install the mobile app on the phone you can disable excess data usage so kids won't go over the limit
          • There's a $10 referral bonus at the beginning so I guess that's a first free month.

          The other alternative:

365 Day Super Pack $99 from ALDI

          • You have to pay $99 upfront for a 1 year prepaid SIM. Less flexibility
          • 12GB Data for the 12 months to use (equiv to 1GB every mth)
          • Unlimited calling / SMS.

The Aldi offering is equivalent to $8.25 a month, which makes it one of the cheapest Kid-friendly (or grandparent friendly) mobile plans around.

OVO's offering drops the unlimited calling for cyber security, which I guess its some kind of DNS-level website restriction? (Rep can confirm).

          • @scrimshaw: okay this pretty good. the OVO one isn't 12 month lock in which could be beneficial to some.

          • +1

            @scrimshaw: Also:

Belong: $10/month, shaping after 1GB so never stops working. They say "over 18" but do not check ID.

Also, only $15 for the first 6 months with discounted starter pack and referral credit. Beats 50c first month.

            Kogan worth comparing too.

          • @scrimshaw: I prefer the aldi one too, but it is harder to find, and you'd have to set up pretty strict program limits otherwise a kid is likely to blow through that 12gb in the first month.

Over 12 months, OVO works out to $9.15 a month. You're not locked in to anything, you don't have to do any hunting.. its a pretty good deal. Service was pretty good when I tried it

Belong: $10/month, shaping after 1GB so never stops working. They say "over 18" but do not check ID.

Now thats a good deal. Service is shaped to 64kbps, which is roughly what you'd get if you worked out a way to transmit data over a phone call like how dialup used to work.

      • Calls cost 99c/min plus 40c connection, so you get at least 359 minutes for your $500 nominal spend.

        • yeah, no kid is going to need 12 minutes a day of phone calls

          • +3

            @Carrian: "No, you hang up."
            "No, you hang up."
            "No, you hang up."
            "No, you hang up."
            "No, you hang up."

            "Hello?"

      • $10 per month seems like a lot for emergencies.

  • +1

Least you are excited about this offer. I'm not

  • Boost is $10 for 1.5GB and unlimited calls, on arguably a better network and free Apple Music streaming.

    • Also on Telstra network so better for regional areas.

    • +1

$10 plan is only for 7 days.

  • Matt, you've lost the edge with these telco battles. If you want a new shtick, see if you can get throttling to work and try what TPG is planning to do.

Give people daily data allowances rather than monthly, and then throttle for unlimited.

Why not… $25 a month, 200MB full speed per day, Throttled to 1mbps for 200MB more after that, Throttled to 128kbps unlimited after that, for the day.

Or maybe you could do better than that. I'd also suggest fullspeed data packs. Why not $5 for 2GB of 'full speed' data that expires within 7 days.

At least you would be unique and would be offering a kind of peace-of-mind trouble-free option. I think parents are deterred by your current plans because it's so easy to blow through a whole months data plan within a couple of days, but this way there would be no way to do that.

  • I’ve actually just moved my two kids OFF this plan, but only because my 15 year old was constantly using more than 1GB (damn Instagram) - ($5 top ups were available)

We were pretty happy with this for about a year or so, but the 1GB of data is pretty slim - but it IS only $10 a month…

This is a great ‘first mobile’ plan, but be mindful that the 1GB is pretty small for today’s teenagers…

  • Does this plan come with data-free streaming of CSL in OVO play?

    • yes it does
