I know, Android tablet is probably not a so popular deal here. But, I think this is a good deal for Android tablet that is not named Samsung. It is still selling 600 and more dollars on eBay.

Thats5 a great deal. I'm looking to replace my now sluggish 4yo samsung 10.5"

I saw this deal, and was about to pull the trigger on it until I read about the wifi/BT problems - they cheaped out and the WiFi and BT actually share the same antenna so there is potential interference when using both concurrently. Given that I watch streams with a BT headphone I decided I did not need this potential problem. The M5 also has no 3.5mm jack - who knows why given that this is a tablet with plenty of real estate for a port.

Putting that one issue aside, this is a decent deal. It's not as good as the Galaxy tab S4 but probably better than the Mi Pad 4 - and is far better than the Tab A series or anything Lenovo is offering. One thing I don't know is how good Huawei is with updating their tablets (one source claim they suck at it :P). With Samsung you will generally get 2 years of updates, and the Mi Pad 4 is likely to get at least Android P.

    • No 3.5mm is probably more to do with cost cutting. Even with phones these days, they're significantly bigger than previous generations. The port plus DAC likely adds $10 they don't want to spend.

Well, at least, they included the USB Type-C to 3.5 mm headset jack adapter cable

But they still have to give you a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter. It just seems like a bad decision. I get phones cutting the port because they want the thinnest profile possible, but this is 7.3mm thick tablet.

        • Agree, they probably thought this was a 'courageous' move, but it is actually quite a dumb one.

    • I've got the 8 inch version and doesn't have any issues with bt and WiFi on at the same time. Could be they have different hardware.

I do recommend this as it's got really good stereo speakers and you can essentially have 2 user accounts on the tablet (different fingerprints for different accounts)

  • This or the mipad 4 plus?? hmmmm decisions… it's too early to be making such decisions!
edit: ughhh shipping is $25USD to Perth.

    • The MiPad 4 isn't even in the same class as the M5 series from Huewei.

      • The MiPad's CPU performance is actually fairly close to the M5's, the MiPad GPU is a lot slower but it's running a lower resolution screen so that should mostly even out.

        • I wonder if this new Turbo GPU update gimmick actually improves the GPU on the M5, I never play games so I honestly have no idea as to what it was like pre-update.

I made this same decision and went with the Mi Pad 4. The reasons:

      1) Experience has taught me that qualcomm chips just seem to run better than other branded SoCs when it comes to android. I can't explain this. Call it non scientific bias.
      2) The newer midrange chip (SD660) matches very well with the older flagship chip (Kirin 960)
      3) There seems to be more user support for MIUI devices than Huawei devices.
      4) If I am going to pay an additional $120 from Mi Pad to get the mediapad M5 I couldn't convince myself not to pay an additional $150 for the Tab S4 :p
      5) The aforemented BT/wifi problem, plus the mi pad 4 has headphone jack
      6) The MiPad 4 has Bluetooth 5.0, and I am hopeful that someday they will manage to implement the dual audio function (no one is quite clear on the witchcraft behind this Samsung feature - but their own webpage indicates it has something to do with BT 5.0).
      7) MiPad has LTE support and works with all 3 of Vodafone's LTE bands (1, 3 and 5)

In favour of the Mediapad M5:
      1) This is a really good price for a top end device!
      2) Better speakers
      3) Has quick charge (9v/2A), the mi pad does not (standard 5V/2A - not sure why they didn't implement QC when they bothered to go USB-C)

  • Before the Galaxy Tab S4 came out, This was the fastest android tablet device for a few months you can get (very sad state of affairs).

I've got the M5 8.4inch and can tell you the speakers are the best thing about it. The CPU isn't anything special anymore as my old S8+ was much faster.

For this price, This is bargain as these things came out at around $A800+ 4-5 months ago.

The bad is these are now bootloader locked and apps don't keep in memory as EMUI is ultra aggressive with apps, The only closest fix I can find is to lock the apps when in Recents view.

Also Huewei has now released the Turbo GPU update for this that is supposed to give you a 30% boost in games.

  • This tablet is great for handwritten note taking. Edit: nvm, this is not the pro version with the stylus.
