I've been using the Commonwealth Bank low rate credit card for about 3 years now, average spending of about $2k-5k per month (20k-60k a year) which has been all paid off by the date.
Just wondering what process I will need to be eligible for a free upgrade?
My mum received a free upgrade to Diamond Awards credit card, but I never received the request.
Can I call them to request/negotiate a free upgrade?
Looking to get the free travel insurance included with the card and to obtain points.
You should change bank lol.
Unless you get a free one with your wealth package, it is really the worst credit card any bank has to offer, bar the free travel insurance.
Which Bank do you recommend?
I think depending on which reward program you want to associate with.
The other big 4 all are offering good rewards at the moment. Otherwise, Coles is good for straight point-to-discount conversion or velocity rewards.

@shaun-o: If Qantas, then either NAB or ANZ, also depend if you have any existing wealth package with either bank, their black cards are free. They are quite comparable.
Otherwise, you can go straight to the source, qantas card or velocity card.

get into financial ruin for a couple years then come back from the brink and u sir will have all the diamond cards you want.
The free upgrades are almost exclusively for:
Gold card holders (old product closed and upgraded)
People with home loan packages
Don't think I've ever seen a case otherwise. You need at least a 15k existing credit limit as well.
I've got 18k limit at the moment.
Possibly could have been a home loan package with another bank that might helped with the upgrade.
I've had a Diamond Awards card with them for a couple of years (Wealth Package + Home Loan). Now that I've looked elsewhere I'm pretty sure it's among the lowest in terms of Rewards points. I recently got approved for a Westpac Altitude Black Mastercard with bonus 80k frequent flyers/3k spend in 3 months. Will be cancelling my CBA card soon.
