Samsung Story Station 2TB Desktop Hard Drive @ Domayne - $98

330

I just saw this advertised on TV and it's confirmed on their website, the Samsung Story 2TB is on sale again for $98. The ad was for Domayne but Harvey Norman may have these too. It's the USB2 model according to their website. I think it's only on sale for this price over the weekend. Their ads are generally pretty vague on these things. Cheapest price on StaticIce is $113.30 for the USB3 model.

I bought one of these last time and it suits my needs perfectly. Be aware that it goes to sleep automatically to save power, which some people may find annoying/inconvenient.

Specs:
* 2TB storage capacity
* Retro design, futuristic performance
* Heat dissipating design for cool performance
* USB 2.0 Interface
* Enhanced data security features

    But why would you get USB2.0 if 3.0 is only $10 more expensive. But Hell cheap internal 2 Tb HD
    BTW anyone opened up the case yet and had a peek inside

    • My mobo doesn't support USB3.0 so I would rather spend that $10 on something else, personally.

      • +2

        afaik usb3 is a backward compatible format so a usb2 mobo should handle usb3 just fine.

        • -1

          But it's only gonna work at USB2 speeds though, right?

        • +2

          You won't own a "USB 2.0 only" computer forever, you know. In fact, you can be almost 100% certain that the next computer you buy will be USB 3.0… and boy won't you be annoyed when you are sitting there LIMITED to USB 2.0 speeds simply because you thought you'd be smart and save $10.

        • You could just rip it out of the enclosure and sure it has an internal drive.. Still cheaper than buying a single 2TB.

          EDIT: Just noticed you can get 2TB drives from MSY for $95 now, this changes everything! :)

        get a usb 3.0 pcie

        • Won't it still be crippled by the actual speed of the hard drive though?

        • no - the hdd is actually much faster - usb2 is quite slow in comparison. If you're transferring large amounts of data - be prepared to wait.

    • add another $16.50 or so for shipping (to Melbourne at least), and then it becomes a $30 difference…

      And if it's just being used with a wdtv live and a laptop with no usb 3.0, then might not be worth it.

      Thinking about getting one for just that. But does this switch on/off with power off of the usb? My wd my book turns off/powers down when i turn the wdtv live off, and switches back on when the wdtv is turned on…Will this do the same (with the switch turned on presumably)? Or does it stay powered up if the switch is on?

      Samsung F4 in mine that I got in December.
      Nice little unit.
      I have had WAY more luck with Samsung stuff than WD.
      Read what Sane says below about 4k Advanced formatted drives if pulling apart.

  • I have. Samsung drive inside. what did you want to know? I took it out because I wanted extra storage on my windows home server

    • Can you please advise of the model? Is it the HD204UI?

      • +1

        Model Number: HD204UI/VP4.

        It is a special version of HD204UI (VP4) - my one failed after 1 day so I returned it to get a refund. Regret buying it (read the forums and found out other people also had bad experience). I lost some files.. I wouldn't store important data on it. Probably okay as a backup drive (to backup another copy of the files).

        Besides, even if it is the normal HD204UI, it is best to do a firmware upgrade on a normal HD204UI.

  • I only see $122 as cheapest USB3 on staticice. where's the $112?

  • Bought 1 from Harvey Norman before. Returned it. The hard drive basically died after 1 day. I guess I was unlucky. Also, the drive likes to shut down too often (to save power).

    • Surely you can configure power saving timeout?

      • No, you cannot. Search the Internet. Also, reliability is also a bit of a concern for these (basically, it powers off too often - so it needs to re-power on regularly).

        I am talking about the PC is running (all other hard drives - internal hard drives AND other external hard drives are all still spinning / powered on … this one, after a while will just enters power saving mode).

        • What rot. My Samsung Story has been on for days with no problems. Nothing wrong the power saving, it comes on when I need it just fine.

  • I missed out on the HN deal. It was about the same price if I remember correctly?

    • Well.. $99. NOT recommended. Read the forums about people's feedback first. I wish I did.

  • I'm also interested in what model HDD is in these. I already have one, and am thinking of cannabilising it to put the HDD inside a NAS.

    If you take it apart, can you use it's internal HDD in other equipment? What model HDD is it? I'd like to get two of the same, so I can set up a RAID array.

    • +2

      Why bother canibalising? A bare 2TB drive is that price or cheaper, and then you know what you are getting AND you get a warranty.

      • Thanks for the comments guys.

        I worded that a little oddly. I meant to say, I was thinking of cannibalizing my existing Story drive, and see if I could buy the same HDD model somewhere else (not in a Story enclosure) for a RAID array.

        I wouldn't be buying another Story (i.e. taking advantage of this deal).

      Why not do this??

      EDIT: Beaten.

    • Please consider, most NAS boxes don't like 4K sector drives. There are both conventional and 4K 2TB drives out there - so make sure you get the right ones if you want the fastest performance. That goes double if you try and RAID these and one is conventional and one 4K.

      When sold by Hardly Normal at Christmas, these were reported to contain HD204UI drives, which are reported to be 4K sector drives.

      You might have no problem, but it needs research.

  • They'd sold out at Domayne @ Warrawong by the time I got there. Joyce Mayne and Harvey Norman would not price match. JM offered me one for $115. I turned it down.

    • lol, i didn't even know JM was still around. Well not in Sydney as far as I know.

  • Do you need to use the on/off switch to safely turn it off? Or can I just leave it on permanently and use the power point switch instead? I want to use it for a media player.

  • HN Domayne Auburn = $114

  • I bought one of these a couple of months ago, and I have to say I am very impressed.

    It does power down sometimes, but this is an amazing change from what I had before, which was an internal 1TB that I had bought, together with an external case (both on the same day about 2 years ago). This was a bad setup, the HDD would NEVER power down, it was ALWAYS spinning, even if I switched the computer off, I would have to reach around the back of the enclosure to flick the power switch. I would leave it on accidentally, and go out for the day, come back, and it was always stinking hot…

    I don't know how other dedicated external HDD go… but this one is certainly a relief from what I had previously.
