Most Unfunny Australian Comedians

Suffered the displeasure of Watching Dave Hughes recently, probably the least funny person I've had the misfortune to watch.

Have no idea how these people make a living as comedians.

Anyway, vote on who you think is the most unfunny:

I’d hazard a guess you aren’t a lesbian or a feminist, you probably aren’t their audience. Me, I find them very funny. I’m not a lesbian but I am a feminist. There are a lot of blokes I find tedious, thus nature balances itself.

      • Eh, I think just saying "lesbian commedians suck RRREEEEEE" is dumb.

The one's that'll just complain/hate on others than pass it off as commedy are painful.

        • I think anybody who complains/hates on others and pass it off as comedy are painful.

          • @try2bhelpful: Definitely.

            • @N1NJ4W4RR10R: I've had a couple of acts where I felt like taking out my Ipad and playing it to show how much I disliked their act - I thought it might be a good passive agressive silent heckle but I wouldn't hassle the people around me with the light.

              • @try2bhelpful: Suprised people can stay for acts like that.

Suppose it'd be money wasted … though you'd think you could get a refund for it not being commedy. You go there for fun, not for depression and/or hate.

@N1NJ4W4RR10R: yeah, it does put me off going to see new acts, at times. What I normally do now is look acts up on You Tube to get an idea on what I'm likely to see when I consider seeing an act. Promotix is a good way to get cheap tickets to see something new; but it can be a crap shoot on what is available. However, getting out of your comfort zone allows you to see some interesting stuff and it is easy to "blank" out an act for a few minutes when you haven't paid much and it is part of a larger group.

Actually liked Nanette, not just comedy, social commentary too, and I'm a straight white male who generally dislikes the social justice warrior ethos, but she had some powerful points to make about comedy, and how trying to turn life's tragedies into jokes can take a toll on the performer.

  • Hamish and Andy. As of it wasn't enough with one

As soon as I saw the email, Dave Hughes came to mind with Julia Morris a close second!

  • +2

Kath and Kim aren't comedians they are characters.

    Rove is pretty unfunny.

  • +1

    Anyone said Rebel Wilson yet?

    • +2

Yes they have. I hope you are not reinforcing the idea that forums are only for writing your opinions and not for reading others.

      • I actually did go back and see someone mention her. Someone else also mentioned defamation which I assume was referring to her too.

  • +1

    Where's Hamish & Andy?

Not even near the slightest funny.

    • -2

      Not comedians

      • +1

We get it you love them

        • I used to love them. Still like them, just think there is something very different than tv/radio funny man or woman to comedian.

I have heard radio funny people talk about it before and they insist they are not comedians.
If you have heard of Jon Blake he is one.

Lolz, who reported this as illegal/inappropriate?

    • +1

It might have just been a joke.

      • Is Dave Hughes a member here?

Hang on a sec, Dave Hughes and Baysew sound similar.

I've just reported you as a ghost account.

        • Well that will haunt me.

  • GEORGE KAPINIARIS

and then some idiot decided to give him 11 years of RAA ads

    • +1

I liked him in Acropolis Now.

any of these new school comedians: tommy dassalo, kyle chandler, diilruk, bart freebairn, anne edmonds, brett blake, demi lardner, adam richards… the list goes on.

its just sad we cant see genuinely funny acts like shane bourne, maurie fields, vince sorrenti, the umbilical brothers, elliot goblet, raymond j Bartholomew, Russell gilbert or a myriad of other truly talented aussie comics anymore. at least rodney rude, kevin bloody wilson and austen tayshus are still doing shows you can see if you are willing to drive out to the bush to see them (cos obviously the city joints don't want to know about real talent, would just rather cater to the hipster PC millenial anti-comedy tastes).

  • +2

I can't believe Peter Helliar isn't in the poll.

  • +1

    Demi Lardner comes to mind

  • Shit. I voted for Judith Lucy, and then I saw Rove Mcmanus on the list.

  • +1

Tom Ballard has got to be the least funny and undeservedly successful comedian.

Also, would love to see a thread with our favourite Aussie comedians, particularly lesser known names who haven't broken into tv.

There are some real winners in the Sydney club circuit. Of course, there's many who are still developing too.

    • Wow Tom welcome to ozbargain!

Why did you put yourself on the list, do you think you're funny?

    • WatchNerd makes me giggle like a girly man.

  • Who ever is making the most money is the funniest

  • Not a big fan of Dave Hughes, but this is hilarious the first time you watch it.

  • I think we have a lot of "comedians" in Australia who excel at doing things like hosting TV shows or MCing, where they're good on camera, able to think on their feet, can deliver one-liners (often written by a team of writers backstage) brilliantly, but don't put on a particularly good stand-up show.

That said, comedy is subjective and I'm not about to yuck anyone else's yum.

    • +2

Well said, take Scab for example - he thinks he is funny, but I don't.

  • Jim Jeffries is right up there for me. An absolutely buffoon that makes me cringe riding of the coat tails of a heavily mayo'd occa accent. Nothing against him and good on him for making it, but I just don't find him remotely funny.

    • He's also become extremely lazy. All his new material is about a show he was doing somewhere and something funny happened.

I agree but I'd offer that it's common for artist of all disciplines to reach a point where they are pretty rich, and thus no longer hungry, and their work has become a job, and they are doing it for the money.

New stuff by Chris Rock, Chappelle, and Jefferies all smack of "my life's actually not bad, but I could use an injection of money".

Louis CK still doesn't have that fault for me, perhaps due to a will to reinvent himself each year (with reason ATM lel).

        • I thought the latest chappelle specials were pretty good tbh. Check out Theo Von; No Offense if you haven't seen it, pretty good!

  • Since that Isaac Butterfield has named himself a comedian he gets my vote , talks about ‘the good ol days’ when he is 25 years old lol ( don’t let the receding hairline deceive you). Went to a Jim Jeffries show overseas about 10 years ago and I’m not kidding quarter of the crowd left within the first 20 minutes - getting pissed on stage and shouting anything to offend people for your full show doesn’t really count as good comedy. Maybe just caught him on an off night but judging by the comments most people aren’t impressed. Hopefully there is a poll soon on the best Aussie comedians, it’s a shame the most popular ones are the worst.

A lot of the comedians on the list are ones who rely on mates in the media and particularly the ABC for plugs and publicity (even though there's no advertising on the ABC…). They're not about to venture into dangerous territory to really upset people and ruin their livelihoods. After all, the real comedians of today are not getting visas because they hurt too many people's feelings and offend todays sacred cows.

Where once offending religion was a crime, today, certain ideologies purvey and even criticising them gets treated severely. People are as religious as before, just that the religion has changed.

  • i don't like some of the new pc comedians who seem to have the attitude of "i'm hilarious if you don't think my joke is funny you must be too stupid to get it"

    no you're just not funny

  • i'm ashamed of myself for even mentioning her name and giving her the attention she insulted our service men and women to get but +1 spot on this list should go to Catherine Deveny

    gutter scum pure and simple
