I think it’s for the in line controller, play pause and volume.
Apple use different pin layout on the plug to make it incompatible for everyone else, and they patent it to make sure no one can do the same. So if this is Apple version, then you will need to buy another cable for the Android, $50 for that.
I got mine during the previous Harvey Norman headphones deal a few years ago, the inline controller doesnt work completely. Only the pause, previous song and next song function works. Volume control doesnt work.
if you get a chance to go in store …try the over ear versions ….much better …after trying both i hung back until i could find cheap over ear. versions.
I agree, I have both and much prefer the over ear, especially for gaming. Wife prefers on ear so personal preference of course.
Yep… huge difference! Passive vs active noise cancelling, leather pads instead of fabric, and a much richer/cleaner sound. If you can stretch your budget, go the upgrade. Very much worth it.

Thankfully, these sound identical to the wireless Senny's so for pure sound quality, they're better than both Sony and Bose's offering. They're just uncomfortable for long stretches.

Anyone know how well these work with Android devices? The Sennheiser page says "Furthermore, it supports Apple devices like iPod, iPhone, and iPad as well as Android tablets and smartphones.", whilst Amazon lists an Android version.
