[VIC] R2E2 XL Mangoes $17/Tray @ Market Place, Highpoint

50

G'day all. Saw these on special at the Market Place fresh vegetables and fruit shop at High Point Shopping Centre. R2E2 are sweet and larger and less fibrous than other varieties. They look great, bright yellow with tinge of red. Although fresh and feels sturdy, I believe they won't last more than 3 days. They come in trays of 10pcs, 9pcs and 8pcs. Woolies selling for $2.50 ea and Coles $2.90 ea.
Edit: At time of purchase there were several stacks of trays chest high, lined up at the front of the store, easily reaching 50+ trays available.
Some suggestions for them
* mango yoghurt
* mango cake (as opposed to banana cake)
* mango shake
* mango lassi
* mango slice cheese cake ( as opposed to peach slices)
* mango kinyaku jelly
* mango juice

Edit 2:
I weighed the mangoes and the biggest one came in a whopping 777g whereas the smallest (only 1) is 655g. The rest were abpve 700g ea.

Have fun and enjoy this summer's fruits

    Personally not a fan of R2E2. The variety lacks flavour when compared to Kensington Pride or Calypso, which are the tastiest.

      Calypso are almost as bad.

      Both Calypso and R2E2 taste like a shitty paw paw.

      Kp and Honey Gold are much nicer.

      • Honey Gold are pricier, not for this forum…unless there is a deal. they could already be out of season. In true OzB spirit, I eat whichever mango variety that is on special !

          They're not out of season, my Coles has the for $3 each.

          • @Scab: Good on you - make sure you eat the skin and seeds too as they are pricier and you should get the most value out of them.

              @alvinmk: I planted the Honey Gold seeds I got from the last deal.

              One tree is going to be a ripper.

              Already a metre tall, will fruit in about 8 years.

              • @Scab: In 8 years time, new varieties could have popped up.

              • @Scab: And you move to another property in the 7th year.

      • Good sweet Calypso's can be even better than KP. KP is pretty hard to beat though, my KP tree fruited for the first time last year and they were superb. I wouldn't eat R2E2 if they were free, truly terrible, on par with tinned mangoes.

        • Nice! Grown from seed? How many years did it take?

          • @dust: You'll get fruit in 8 to 10 years.

            Need room though as mango trees are huge, and depending on your area can be prone to fungal infections.

            @dust: Nah it was from a ~500mm high tree from Bunnings, fruited in the second year but I should have removed the fruits so it could grow, got top heavy and nearly snapped a few branches under the weight of the fruit.

        • KP tree fruited for the first time last year and they were superb.

          Yeah, mum has one in her yard.

          Got over 65 from one tree in one season.

          And god they tasted good.

    • I would prefer KP or Honey Gold. As for R2E2, the flesh is firm, lack of sweet and you can find some HUGE one on the market.
