B28, headphone jack and NFC. This passes OzBargain's standards for phones.

Should I buy the UMIDIGI One Pro?
    Expert's Rating:

    ratingsratingsratingsratingsratings recommended

On paper the UMIDIGI One Pro's spec seems too good to be true. Fast wireless charging, NFC, 19:9 IPS displays, dual-cameras, side-mounted fingerprint sensors and an attractive design aren't things you have any right to expect at this price. But this is a budget phone, and as such some corners have naturally been cut. The display is just HD in resolution, performance is middling, the fingerprint sensor can be temperamental and the cameras can leave something to be desired. Overall, though, a great budget buy - and one people will have no idea was so cheap.

    • I owned a UMIDIGI Z, never ever buying a UMi/UMIDIGI phone again. The experience is so horrible, and there is no support. Buggy phones with batteries that fail quickly, the camera is a nightmare too.

      Don't forget 10% GST

      • So AliExpress DOES charge GST when shipping to an AU address?

        • +2

          Yes

Looks an awful lot like the Kogan XS though Kogan claim 5.7" vs 5.9" on this one. Maybe it's a different UmiDigi model… UmiDigi even have the carbon version of their phone on their site (http://www.umidigi.com/page-umidigi_one_overview.html). Maybe it just comes out of the same OEM (Or Kogan got specs wrong…) Either way, looks like better spec/$ than Kogan. The external dimensions of the phone are identical according to specs, so I'd say someone is lying about screen size (or exagerating…)

  • +2

It's a real serious shame that the screen isn't at least 1080p (even if that made it a bit more expensive) because otherwise it would be the perfect Chinaphone…even better than the sharp S2

    • I think its better than Sharp S2 as it has better USA LTE Band support.

I've been waiting for a phone with NFC to replace my trusty Kate but for the life of me I can't remember why. I have zero interest in any of this:

What can I use NFC for?

Learn how to use NFC to:

    Send a phone number
    Send a picture
    Send a document
    Send directions
Launch an app on someone else's phone
    Make a payment
    Connect with NFC tags

It may have had something to do with LastPass or Yubikey- can't remember.

    • I'm waiting to see if any fitness bands with NFC will work with these chinadroids for making payments. Nothing yet. Seems to be a China-only thing.

  • Is coolicool add 10% gst on top of the price?

Is coolicool the same as gear best? I'm confused with 2.45% above from cashrewards

    • where did you see cashrewards?

      • OP mentioned above "Use cashrewards.com.au for 2.45% with new Gearbest"
So I am not sure about this.
        Get from gearbest or ???

  • I just watched the review… This seems like insanely good value! What is the catch?

      That mediatek cpu.

MediaTek, HD+ only screen (though Apple think it's ok with XR having slightly better PPI screen)and obviously lack of warranty/support.

I should really stay away from Ozb first thing in the morning. Bought one but I don't know why.

    • Agreed 🤝

    • Because… gimme, gimme, gimme, short for give me.

I'm assuming no software updates ever, right?

If so, isn't the Nokia 6.1 plus better?

    • I prefer no updates .. the more I update the slower my phones get :) 8.1 should be good for a few years. Also how deos Nokia compare to this pricewise?

      • +1

        $276 delivered currently on eBay

        https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/183409995258

Version updates may be a nice to have but security updates are a MUST imho. You will likely get neither with this unit.

Nokias are all Android One devices now

        • Great price for a great phone. Dual sim 64gb/4gb model, $276 final price delivered from AU seller ( no added GST and maybe AU warranty ), but supposedly LAST ONE for sale.

Already on Android P for last month and November security update.

        • Nokia 6.1 is more expensive, is physically larger - 75.8mm width vs 71.4mm. Umi One Pro is also stock android, though not Android One so may not have guaranteed updates. Also screen is better on Nokia. Nokia has less LTE band support for Global Roaming.

      • "gimme"
Good point for lower end phones, as long as you have not much need for security reasons ( many people never use smartphone for online credit card purchases or online banking anyway).

        • +1

never use smartphone for online credit card purchases or online banking anyway

What about NFC & Android Pay?

I personally wouldn't compromise on security updates if I was planning to use my phone for that but each to their own.

          • +1

@ginmi: That's a fair point and as you said each to their own. I personally (perhaps uneducated) don't place too much value on incremental Android security updates from a risk perspective. On the flipside I use a permanent VPN connection on my phones.

  • Just bought this from Gearbest for exactly the same price with 1% cash rewards.

Bought plenty of stuff from GB without any issues, but never heard of these guys - same company?

    • their site says no shipping to australia ??? (gearbest)

    • +1

      How does Gearbest address GST?

Do they charge an extra 10% at the checkout like eBay does now or do they do nothing and you get assessed GST at the border when the phone arrives to oz?

      • -1

Why do you care so much? Do you work for ATO or Customs? Or just a jilted local seller?

      • +4

you get assessed GST at the border when the phone arrives to oz?

That's not how it works. That only happens when you have something over the value of $1000 AU. The current legislation is that the overseas sellers must collect GST from you at the time of the sale. Then they must pay that GST to the ATO.

It's not the responsibility of Customs to check if GST has been paid (and no way of knowing), so if a Chinese seller doesn't charge it then you're not paying it.

Since the introduction I've had close to 40 orders come through from China without a single cent paid.

        • -1

          Thanks for clarifying.

So basically it is up to the seller to sort out their GST obligations and the buyer has no responsibility/liability whatsoever?

I didn't know this was the case.

This means that overseas sellers and marketplaces with no presence in Australia can give the ATO the finger and could end up being even cheaper (from a customer perspective) than eBay or Amazon who are forced to comply with the new GST laws.

Does AliExpress charge GST? I'm assuming no

          • @ginmi:

So basically it is up to the seller to sort out their GST obligations and the buyer has no responsibility/liability whatsoever?

Correct. The law regarding goods over $1000 still remains the same though.

Beware Coolicool. Still stalling, will not accept return unless I close paypal case first.

    hi dear
close the case firstly ,and then we can give you a address to sent it back

    • Have you talked to PayPal? Maybe try to get a direct refund from them?

      • It seems once I raised to paypal issue, I can not send more info to paypal until the seller responds.
Can I somehow phone or online chat with paypal for advice?

And Coolicool is refusing to respond to paypal. I guess they are stalling until the last minute. (in a few days)
Hoping they can trick me into dropping the case. But I know if I do that, it can not be reopened.

I was only asking for an exchange, but they won't even do that!

The fault is a rapid power drain, occurs even in safe mode after factory reset. But they ignore or cannot comprehend this, telling me to try "power saving mode", and "it is normal". Worse, the fault is intermittent. So I suppose if I send it back they will say it works normally.
Paypal is the only hope. So annoying they are delaying this, instead of just sending an exchange.

        • +4

If Coolicool refuses to respond to PayPal then it's actually a great thing for you as you are guaranteed to win the dispute and get your money back in full.

You can also use PayPal's refunded returns to recover shipping costs if PayPal forces you to send the product back before they refund.

          Either way, you win.

If I was you, I'd cease all contact with Coolicool and wait until you can escalate to a dispute.

Then, let PayPal do all the running around for you and just wait for a refund.

You obviously also have the option of a chargeback.

Either way, I just can't see a scenario whereby you don't get back your money in full.

Thanks for the heads-up btw. Coolicool is another merchant I am adding to my blacklist

          • @ginmi: Thanks.
The only sad thing is, I really like the phone.
Would prefer a working one to a refund.

got one on ebay for $204 delivered from melbourne. use code pudding and seller had a discount. B28 is a must for me in my area as semi rural so for the price and specs will do the job.

    • That's 32GB. $249.03 from that seller for 64GB

      • +4

not after applying pudding and the sellers own $20 discount.
        https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Umidigi-One-Pro-Smartphone-Andro…

        • I see. Excellent deal. That's a Sydney seller. I was looking for a Melbourne seller.

          I don't suppose you've found a case for it?

        • +2

Just did a practice run on mudguppy's ebay link.. comes to $204.25 delivered.

        • may be we should update this into the post header, as this is cheaper, better, local.

The 20$ gets added as seller discount once you add the product onto cart.

For one product in cart, seller gives 20$ discount, 2(&above) products gets 39.56$.

          Twilight - https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Umidigi-One-Pro-Smartphone-Andro…

          • @maddykartik: How does the local seller sell cheaper than the Chinese sellers?

            • +1

@shaybisc: The 2 linked above aren't local sellers - profile location is China. Don't believe the "ships from" in the listing as you could Iraq or Syria if you wanted to. It does however bypass the GST.

Since they're charging in AUD, they would have converted from USD which fluctuates daily resulting in a better price. A sitewide eBay coupon would reduce it even further.

              • @Clear: ouch, i got sucked in as it mentioned "Location - Sydney NSW".
Ordered 2 and received it on Nov 3rd.
This was the tracking number - 33G78528036201000935008

Havent opened the box yet. will do this eve.

  • Can someone confirm for me if this UMIDIGI One Pro mobile works on ALL Telstra Network?? I will be stuff if it does not!! Thanks!!
This ebay seller says - All of our phones only support local Optus network, not Telstra network, please kindly noted before purchase !!!

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/UMIDIGI-One-Pro-5-9-Smartphone-4…

    • +1

thats just bull$#!t the UMIDIGI One Pro supports all telstra's bands. cheaper from the link above.
      https://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/mobile_phone_frequencies

      • Yep….Thanks …spec wise all seems ok with Telstra…Just looking for someone who owns the phone and can confirm they run on Telstra Network before I pull the trigger…

  • Can anyone check if the dual camera is working? Their Z2 model has dual camera but the 2nd one is fake according to a review in YouTube. The guy basically covered the 2nd camera and it produced the same image quality.

  • Be careful. I didn't hear anything from this seller for 10days and decided to lodge a paypal dispute as they were not responding to my emails. All of a sudden they respond and say they are 'out of stock' despite the fact that it is still available for sale on their website. They want to me to change to another model and pay the difference. Yeah right!
