“System Changes That May Effect Gamers” Aussie Broadband

Hi all, did anyone else get an email from Aussie broadband tittled “System Changes That May Effect Gamers” ?

Email reads as follows;
We're currently implementing some system changes in response to an increasing worldwide shortage of the IP addresses that are used to connect you and your devices to the rest of the world.

Most of our customers will not notice any change. However, if you're a gamer or host services, you may find an issue when using an Xbox or PlayStation.

If this is the case for you (and we do apologise for any inconvenience), please contact our Customer Support Team on 1300 880 905, and they can fix it for you.

  • Yeah i got this. Don’t know what it means, seems a bit odd

They are going to NAT your traffic through a router. Will impact latency a little, and will probably prevent any direct incoming connections (like P2P games).

Sounds like they are going to do CGNAT, which is stupid and frustrating. I have a few connections with them, but I haven't received an email yet. See what happens.

    • +4

Surely you can't expect them to use IPv6, that would be madness!

    • What is so stupid about it?

An IPv4 address runs about $20 a pop on the secondary market these days. That, is stupid.

Honestly "not my problem" what an IPV4 address costs. This has been a well known looming problem for decades. Also not my problem that ISPs, hardware vendors and backhaul providers have been collectively dragging their feet for said decades, all while diligently collecting our residential and business service fees.

It's stupid because it breaks a fundamental end-to-end concept of internet connectivity. I would have no problem if IPV6 could by default connect end to end everywhere but thanks to the aforementioned collective laziness we're in a situation where that's not gauranteed so the end user/customer is now the one being asked to make the comprimise…

From MyRepublic I can tell you: CGNAT sucks. Mind you I don't actually notice at all for gaming. It's just general

      • +1

If you don't notice it, what sucks about it?

        • Sorry I just saw this thanks to another comment sending a notification.

It doesn't impact my gaming. But proper P2P transfers and wanting to access my LAN from the outside are both impossible.

Free opt-out sounds okay. For those who doesn't complain, that means they don't need a public IPv4 address and hence won't feel any difference.

      • +1

Eh, needing to opt-out at all adds an additional barrier to people using a service that they've ostensibly already paid for, and which less tech-savvy people (e.g. very young gamers, or older, non-tech savvy users) may not be aware of/know how to resolve.

  • This is about an upcoming transition to CGNAT. Which obviously sucks but you will have an option to opt out.

What is concerning me is whether they will remain to have "sticky" ip addresses for those who opt out. Paying extra $10 for a static ip address is not an option.

    • Our IP addresses will remain somewhat "sticky". That won't be changing.

  • So they finished the CGNAT trial and will implement it across?

Are you sure the title wasn't "System Changes That May Affect Gamers"?

Unless it was about actualisation of gamers

  • +1

Yes, they are implementing CGNAT, but it is a free opt-out. It is a way of not wasting IPv4 addresses on users that don't need them.
I opted out a couple of days ago.

Our system changes should not affect the majority of users. Most people will not notice a difference. XBOX, P2P gaming, PS4 users, and customers who require port forwarding may experience issues such as strict NAT errors on PS4, and the not being able to host games on their own system. If you experience these specific errors, or utilise port forwarding for security cameras, or other programs, then you should call customer service if your systems aren't working. If you do not use these things, then it's highly unlikely anything will change for you.

Note: If you have called customer service in the past to remove port blocking then you will automatically opt-out and there's nothing further you need to do. So far this has only been implemented in Victoria. We do not have dates as to when it may be implemented anywhere else.

Also, if you wish to follow up on the latest, or want to trial an IPv6 address, check out our whirlpool discussion forums here: https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum/152

This is nothing to panic over and if you're a gamer, you may already be opting out as the majority of them have their ports unblocked anyway, but just call if you get the NAT error.

    • So I have to call up to opt out? Can't do it via the portal?

      • You will need to call up if you want to opt-out right now.

    • Will there be any change to latency?

      • There should be no real noticeable change to latency. The email is going out as the changes can prevent some systems from working entirely like online gaming on XBOX and PS4. We wanted to reach out to those customers, especially ones that mostly troubleshoot on their own and receive that NAT strict error, to let them know that we can help them.

  • Nice of them to actually give a heads up this time. IPV4 address space problem been known for 25 years and this is what customers end up with towards the end of 2018 - A rushed hack that is rolled out within a few weeks.

  • I'm on a business connection with Aussie Broadband which I think has a static IP?
I was never formally notified of my IP address but I'm going to assume I'm good…

    • Yes, business services should have a static IP included.

  • Yep and they fixed things for me. AussieBB is great, even at 10pm on a Saturday you can speak to someone local.

  • What are some other ISP's status in regards to this?

Is it only Aussie Broadband going onto CGNAT?

Am interested to know most of the big players but I am personally with TPG transferred from Mate Communicate this month after hearing of Mungi going into voluntary administration (logic is going with someone bigger like TPG will future proof me for sometime unless TPG gets eaten up too which I hopefully won't see for a few more years if ever knock on wood).

  • Thank god i found this thread, was tearing my hair out!
