This is a pie maker, so you put your pastry in and then your filling, close lid and cook, turns out great much easier then trying to do it in a oven

What are the chances a complete cooking n00b could get a decent pie out of this?

It's pretty easy.
Just buy pastry from the frozen aisle of the supermarket. Puff or shortcrust, whatever you prefer.
It should come with pastry cutter (like a cookie cutter) to do a big circle and a small circle. Big circle is for the bottom and the side lining. Little circle is for the top.
Then just get creative with the fillings. I'd do bolognese, casserole, even cheeseburger (mince, grated cheese, diced pickles and onions). Sweet pies were easy just puree some appple/pear/peach whatever you want.
