I don’t usually pay much attention to hearsay but from comments it seems that (apart from the specific issue with 3TB drives) WD is more reliable than Seagate.
Thinking back, most of my Seagates have eventually failed, and definitely the last 3 of 4.

I had a 1 TB WD that got corrupted recently after 2 yrs or so
My personal record with external drives is a WD 3.5" that failed within a week or two of purchase, while I'm yet to have an issue with my Seagate ones.
Useless sample size of one but had one of these corrupt Ps4 data twice recently, very annoying and can't return it :/
cheap but slow.
I've had the worst experience with 2 failed Seagate drives so I am hesitant to use another. I think WD or Samsung is the way to go for me.

I rotate between four of these in my backup regime, and all four have never skipped a beat, and speed is fine.
You get what you pay for, and sometimes too cheap is for a reason.

I don't get why anyone would get an "external" over a portable these days, with the price differential being what it is.
External drives are much bigger and need to be plugged into an outlet. Portable drives are smaller, literally portable, and just stick into a USB port.
Just food for thought.
I have the 1tb version of this drive and uses only one USB port to work, no external power and it is not bulky. External and portable mean the same thing (at least for 2.5” drives)

Actually, to use your three example suppliers given further down, Officeworks differentiate between them using the terms "Desktop Hard Drives" or "Portable Hard Drives" respectively; eBay groups them in together under the category "External Hard Disk Drives"; JB HiFi is the same as Officeworks using "Desktop" and "Portable" as differentiators.
So your "typical" naming convention isn't so typical, but thanks for your out of date information and uninformed opinion I guess…

Easy. Externals (by which I assume you're referring to 3.5" drives) tend to be cheaper per gigabyte all other factors being equal, and of course offer higher capacities. And many have ventilated cases which might help improve the life of the drive due to better heat dissipation. And if you don't need it to be portable but are just sitting next to your desktop PC, the size difference is probably not an issue.
I suppose each to their own. For me having a bulky 3.5" drive is the same as going for an ugly full-tower desktop PC - no need to cheap out any more when the prices have come down so much!
I make the most use of my space: mini-ITX at home, 14" laptop for professional development, and SFF desktop PC for the office. This also looks far more professional when dealing with clients daily.
My portable drive usage:
a) For the office I keep a 1.8" SSD permanently plugged in, which has no heat buildup and is fast for managing thousands of documents;
b) For routine backups - I use two 2.5" mechanical portable drives for redundancy. Heat is a non-issue, and they take up less space than even a single 3.5" drive.This also looks far more professional when dealing with clients daily.

Yes, if you want to cherry pick the most expensive $/TB size of 3.5" External Desktop Drive (4TB) to make the comparison with, you'll get comparable pricing. But, I don't get why anyone would get 4TB Desktop drive over a 6TB one these days when the price difference is marginal.

The price is really good but I must share my personal experience using this HDD. It’s a really terrible one as the speed is really slow compared to other regular drives and it got corrupted twice causing my files to be lost and I had to reformat it twice. I would pay a little more to get the better Seagate drives.
