  • That's a lot of money for a thermometer. I hope it comes with the Nokia Ringtone.

    • Yes, but it’s much nicer than the rectal variety and it’s an instant reading ;)

  • good for baby ?

    • Yep, the Nokia website says it is

When did people become obsessed with high precision & accuracy in temp readings to know if someone has a fever?

It used to be we placed a hand to the forehead, then glass thermometers (often a little difficult to read but fairly good accuracy). Knowing absolutely precisely the temp really won't change the diagnosis.

    Now…
High precision - FDA-cleared Thermo has 16 infrared sensors to provide a highly-accurate result
Quick & easy - Ultra-fast measurement with color-coded fever indicator
    Sanitary - Non-invasive, no-contact measurement
Automatic synchronization - Data from every measurement and health advice appear in the Thermo app automatically via Wi-Fi (iOS and Android)
Multi-user friendly - Up to 8 users can access their personal temperature history with the ability to share with doctors

Would be handy in clinical or hospital setting.

    • A skin temperature reading is hardly an accurate tell for core body temp.

Bar all the fancy keywords, I think the main benefit is an instant reading, especially for baby’s and kids who don’t want a thermometer in their mouth for a minute.

      • Yes, skin temp is just an indication & really requires further investigation of core body temp. So precision of skin temp is next to useless.

Other far cheaper quick non-contact thermometers available to give an indication.

        • True. I suppose what you're really paying for is the "smart" features. However, Xiaomi has one for about $20. That seems like a much better deal :P

          • @klunkeh: Concerned parents may be mislead by the precision of the data collected by this wizbang device, over understanding the actual problem (if it actually exists).

Diagnosis relies on accurate data, not necessarily super precise data - for example when diagnosing fevers.

My background was in designing research. People can too easily trust equipment over what is actually going on.

It's something to be wary of when tempted by high tech gadgets to do pretty low tech jobs. Discuss it with your GP.

@INFIDEL: That's very true! It can be easy to get fixated and forget to look at the problem from an overall approach, temperature being one of many data points.

              • @klunkeh: Well said.

Validity (is it measuring what you think you are measuring - eg core body temp) of the test or method used for measurement is far more important than precision (how likely multiple measurements will be very similar).

Precise measurement of skin temp says little of the important core body temp. (There could be other reasons for a higher skin temp than a fever or illness.) So increasing the precision is of no benefit - it just sounds better.

i think it's because parents want to make sure condition not worsen

and most ear or forehead or armpit …. reads different reading everytime … measure 37 now … nekkk minittt 42c !

mouth reading might get chewed and rectal would be painful

Actually this is quite useful despite the heavy price-tag. The little one rarely stays still for long enough for traditional temperature taking techniques. This one is contactless (so you can do it in their sleep) and takes only a few seconds to obtain reading. Reading is conveniently uploaded into APP via Bluetooth or WiFi if you set it all up correctly.

and then loaded to facebook for all the friends to see?

      • Automatically posts to all your social media accounts haha!

      • Lol, more like keep a record of temperatures especially handy for temperature fluctuations of an on-going fever etc…
