Win 10 Stuck on Wait a Moment

Hi

The used gaming PC just turned up. Turned it on and it's stuck on ‘Just a moment’ with the circle turning. After 10 mins it goes to Desktop with only the Recycle bin there and dark background. Can't click on anything even the Win icon in the bottom left corner. Restarted the PC few times same thing. Opened case up made sure everything is connected - all good. Bios looks good updated to latest version.

I'm going out of my mind here, do you know what is going on here?

Would it be a corrupt windows installation?

  • I'm going out of my mind here, do you know what is going on here?

I'm guessing that, to use Microsoft's words, "Something has gone wrong" :-(

Would it be a corrupt windows installation?

Perhaps. Could be a hardware problem, too.

    Can you return it?

Otherwise, I'd use another PC to make a bootable rescue CD or USB stick, then boot on that and see what happens.

  • Disconnect the ethernet cable if connected see if that works.
If you can get to the desktop hold down Start + R and type in the box "explorer.exe" without quotes.
This should fix the black screen problem. After that go to settings and reconfigure your updates settings.

  • Was there an update recently?
Does the File Explorer load? (Windows + E)
    Was the computer working before?
Might want to run the Startup repair tool from Windows Recovery Environment which is accessed using the Windows 10 install media.

Edit: I missed the first sentence. It's a newly obtained computer it seems.
I agree with the above comment of just erasing everything on the drive if there is indeed no value to the data.

  • Fresh install of W10 does wonders

  • Look up safe mode.

  • Honestly I'd probably do another reformat if you can? Might also just be an odd windows thing, I reformat my laptop and it always starts funny, I can't right click the desktop to get options, I can't open up basic things. Then I install and update my graphics card driver and everything works properly, no idea why? Might have to install all windows updates and the graphics driver and see if theres still an issue?

  • As others have said first step is to make a bootable win 10 USB drive and try a reinstall.

Then disconnect any non needed items eg if you have integrated graphics and a dedicated graphics card, unplug the graphics card. Windows can do weird things when it doesn’t have the right drivers.

Failing all that, what did the listing say ? I’d be lodging a dispute and sending it back.
