Mine is also set to show popup notifications from my Home Assistant setup if some is at the door, the garage door is open too long, etc. I can also check on various security cameras via the tv.
It can also act as a Google Assistant to do smart home functions, via the remote's microphone. I haven't dug into that though since we have a Google Home in the same room.

What do people use these for? What's the benefit of this over just buying chromecast?
Simplest answer is a remote control. Then, the fact that you can do it all then use your device for something else.
For instance, my little kids can turn this on and navigate to their saved YouTube channels or Netflix logins without needing to manage a $300 tablet or phone.
