Experiences Using Asia Miles and Marriott Rewards?

This is the first time I will be using points for travel and I'm looking for some logistical advice.

I've heard that sometimes flight availability is a concern when redeeming points. Will I have any problems transferring AMEX points to Asia Miles only to find that I can't get a flight and be stuck with Asia Miles points?

With Marriott Rewards, some hotels show no availabilities at all. Will they release more as time goes by?

Wanting to go to Japan in Dec 2019.

Any pointers would be much appreciated.

    Search on the asia miles website for availability. When you find something you want give the call centre a call and they can hold your award seat for a week or two to give you time to transfer AmEx MR points to your Asia Miles accounts

      Thanks Benwaffle. That's a really good tip re Asia Miles and Marriott.

      In the age of the internet. Sometimes I forget calling is an option.

    I would give Marriott a call as well, sometimes award availability is not visible online but is actually redeemable through their call centre. I don't know what the availability is like ever since the SPG merger earlier this year

      Agree with this or email. I booked earlier this year (Jan) for stays in Marriott Ginza in Decm 18. Online it had 0 availablity. Emailed them got a reply saying that I can book. So did it online and attached the certificate as well. Happy days.

        When you say you did it online, did they book in through email for you?

          Yes thats right. Online, it returned 0 nights. But when I emailed them for availablity they said they had it so I confirmed with them via email and they booked for me. It then appeared on my account after its done.

              @Hogg: I wouldnt know. :D Only going there in a months time!! This trip is 1.5 years in the planning with all the SQ/SPG/Marriott points built and booked. Looking forward to it. Going to Osaka first though and staying in the Marriott Miyako on the 7 night cert then a week in Marriott Ginza.

                  @Hogg: All good! Part of the planning was also due to achieving platinum via status challenge. Hoping to get any upgrade, but will expect nothing so if it does happen will be a surprise :) thanks.
