What is Finnish Baby Box?
Being as a gift from Finnish government to Kate & Prince William, it is a tradition that dates back to the 1930s while it was initially designed for all newborn in Finland, no matter what background they are from, equal life chances for all. For 80 years, with the mattress in the bottom, many babies have their first nap in the box.

Can I keep Australian babies in this box as well or do I need to buy a special attachment to do so?

    • +2

You can get European to Australian adapters on eBay.

      • does it come in adult sizes for the NT …. remote housing issues fixed.

    • +3

To use it in Australia, just place the baby under the box

    • You might need a male to female (USB) connector.

  • Well done for doing this hopefully this doesn't get OzBargained :|

bunnings has plenty of free boxes at the front of the store. different sized boxes for the different sized babies you have

  • +2

so it’s basically a free cardboard box and you have to buy the mattress separately!
@ OP: how much is the mattress?

  • +3

    Free box nice

  • +3

“limited to one box per mum”
    - Wouldn’t it be more correct to say “one box per newborn”?

      • +1

        Two thoughts:

        1. How hypocritical is it for these groups to have such gendered and exclusive names while being vocally pro-equality/diversity? But at the same time…

        2. As a guy, how sensitive and insecure do you have to be to let the name of some group affect you in any meaningful way at all?

(Look, I'm unbiased - I can flame both sides equally.)

Cool. Now I just need to mate with someone and have a baby.

  • +5

Well, it'd be a lot better if
    a) it was a real 'Finnish baby box' similar to that provided in Finland, that actually contained useful things for a newborn.
    b) it was provided by the Australian government

    Nice advertising mamaway.

Indeed, they have (probably deliberately) misunderstood the concept. The actual Finnish baby box is full of all sorts of useful stuff, including a mattress. The fact that it can be used as a cot is just sort of a byproduct of having to send all the stuff and needing packaging for it. I should know, I've slept in one those boxes in my time.

      • So just add a mattress and extras yourself ?? Be a nice gift for an expectant Mum.

        • +1

          Um, not really.

          • @John Kimble: The baby box + mattress + gifts isn't good enough for you ?

            • @redcreek200: The whole point of the box o/s is it's "free" from the government. I suppose the items inside would be useful no doubt, but why would you want to receive that from a friend?

              • @John Kimble: If you don't even like the idea of baby box + mattress + gifts, why are you even on this thread ?

                • @redcreek200: Because I clicked thinking it was a box full of stuff, not an empty cardboard box.

                  • @John Kimble: it’s full of potential ….not empty …what more do you want, our politicians aren’t even full of potential.

                    • @garage sale: I get that it's free. But I will personally pass on a free cardboard box.

                • @redcreek200: I like the idea of getting one full of stuff for free from my government or from a store promotion, just not from a friend.

I wonder if I can sue for discrimination because I'm a dad?

    • When's the last time you gave birth ? It did say 'post-delivery' Mums …

      • -1

Because kids don't need 2 parents any more? I'm just as capable of putting my kid in a box as a woman/gender-confused person.

    Walks past
Mamaway: You look like a pregnant mother, would you like a free Finnish box?

Ah no, that's just my winter fat but I'll take the free box!

  • +3

It's literally just the BOX? The actual one given to mothers in Finland contains a various assortment of baby things, with a tiny little mattress as well - the box-as-a-bed is just a bonus. This is pretty damn stupid and pointless to just be giving out the literal BOX to people.

  • +3

Why would anyone want this box without at least a mattress included? There's nothing special about the box itself in the Finnish box.

  • it’s actually a good idea, when babies out grow cots it’s hard waste collection for the cot or now land fill ….this might be able to be recycled into paper

  • I wouldn't even let my baby nap, let alone sleep in this box, I'd be too paranoid about SIDS.

  • +1

Defective product: A cardboard box with a hole in each side and unfinished corner edges isn't safe for Bub. Even the infant in the first photo has their finger in the hole, that's a paper cut risk at best.

Also, this is barely a Freebie. All they're offering for free is a cardboard box. To use it for the advertised purpose, one must purchase the mattress.

Quite frankly this deal is a whole lot of marketing, barely any substance and seems to have wasted our users' time.
