Hi, I'm looking to purchase a board game for a gift for a 14 year old. He is pretty smart and loves playing Catan and solving puzzles, so something with a bit of thinking required (but not too complicated to learn …)
Any recommendations?
Thanks

Have a look at Sequence; it comprises some luck, some strategy, but does not drag on for hours and hours (unless you want it to), and is suitable for that age group +
+1 on Sequence
Go
Carcassonne
That game sucks.
you suck
boardgamegeek.com has more information than you'll ever need. They have a top 100 list: https://boardgamegeek.com/browse/boardgame as a starting point.
I personally have played and enjoyed Pandemic, Ticket to Ride, and Star Wars: Imperial Assault.
You could also try a card game like Magic: the Gathering - there are some good pre-built decks that are fun to play. Warning: can get very expensive.
I feel like this needs to be more prominent re Magic: The Gathering, so…
Yeah I like Pandemic. Eventhough I've only played it on my mobile xD
Operation
Any of the Exit series. They are 'one play' games but heaps of fun. Great as a gift idea

Small World
7 Wonders!
Power Grid
zombicide
Ticket to ride
How many players? What length of play time?
If he loves Catan, why not buy him the cities and knights Catan expansion. It is a great addition to the game. Personally, I like Viticulture, which is very similar to Catan but adds a little bit more difficulty and skill (A large part of Catan is luck and first positioning).
For a 4 player (2 teams) game, you can't go past Codenames. Very accessible and encourages lateral thinking. A game lasts about 20 mins. Never met anyone who didn't want to keep playing another game.
Or for 5+ players, Secret Hitler is amazing. It's a game of bluff to either stop getting Hitler into power or get him into power. Trouble is… you may not know who is a Liberal and who is working for Hitler… or who actually is Hitler!
Agree with Codenames, played that until the early hours of the morning without realising we'd played so many games.
Thanks for all the suggestions. Ideally can be played by as few as 2 people (or more), Even 1 (he likes Rush Hour, which has the advantage it only needs 1 player). Shortish game time would be good. The Catan expansion is a great idea - may look into that, although I see they are quite pricey
Sequence
Jumanji
I'd recommend Lords of Waterdeep. It's about the same complexity as catan, but is a 'worker placement' type of game where you complete missions and build buildings by placing a hero on a space - which blocks other people from using that space. When everyone has placed their heroes for the turn you take the reward from your spaces and go again.
King of Tokyo
Burger Up (AUS Developed game)
+1 for Codenames
+1 for Pandemic
Pit: Fun as….we'd get so wound up screaming that the neighbours called the cops- lol.

If you can, try to find the original deck, maybe Ebay or Etsy?
