Is $264 a Normal Price to Order a Replacement Garage Remote via Strata

Good morning all, I just moved into a unit that we recently purchased, our only remote control that provides access to the garage door for the building stopped working few days later, though it still works for lift and the main entrance.

I changed its battery, that didn’t help. I was told that I am not allowed to go to an independent security company to order a new one. The strata company said someone did it before and caused a big drama, so that others in the building had to have theirs reprogramed. They advised me that the cost to have a replacement remote or have it repaired is $264 including $80 for the remote and $160 service fee, then plus GST.

I am wondering if the price is reasonable, any feedback will be appreciated.

  • The price is not reasonable. Card or cash?

Don’t know, I thought I’d better to ask around first, as I need two remote controls.

Maybe do some research here - https://www.remotepro.com.au/ - Sometimes you can program new remotes from current working remotes. They have been helpful to me in the past. I have not done the remote <> remote programming, but there are also videos on Youtube…

Thanks wheeliekegman, i will definitely take a look at it. I think the problem is that my current one is not working, not sure I can reprogram based on it

Is it the same garage door for everyone? Perhaps you can use a working remote from a neighbour in the units to reprogramme if that is the case.

  • It is probably because the new remote and garage opener may need some programming and they will need to call out someone to do that, But @wheeliekegman is on the money, you may be able to find a remote from online sellers and program it your self..

  • When you say it still works for the lift, presumably the swipe token for the front door and the lift are the same thing with one side having buttons for the garage ?

  • Knick you are right, the remote has a button for the garage door, but no button is needed for the main entrance and lift

    • It sucks but I'd just go through the strata. You never know when you will need them to do something for you and you don't want to be that person that caused issues with everyone else's remotes.

The only other thing you could try is bringing it up with the realestate you bought the unit through. It's pretty reasonable to think the garage remote would last for a couple of years or at least would be fixed with a battery change. I can only assume something has happened to it previously like going through the wash (maybe the old owners?)

  • service fee is for someone to input the new remote code to the system, if so $160 for call out is normal.

    • So there is a system on site which will record all the individual unique code for every remote for the building?

      • Are you asking or telling him lol, maybe you should read what you type in your thread.

It's not reasonable at all, but Strata is Strata and they'll charge what they want.

  • Can it be reprogrammed without being on site? I am thinking I can go to the company instead of paying the call out fee. Anyone has the similar experience before?

  • In our building, everyone's garage door had a unique I'd so it was possible to know who used the garage or any entry for that matter at a particular time. We have regular audits where we need to submit all our key IDs by a certain date and time after which the remaining ones are disabled.

Our cost is just $80 and we don't have any call out fee for anyone to come onsite to get it. We do have to go to the building management company office to pick up new/spares. The building manager cannot provide them.

    • Wow, that is heaps better without the service fee

$80 for the remote and $160 service fee, then plus GST.

Sounds about 'right'. $80 for a remote that is and $160 for a service fee for strata to do something, also sounds about right.

    Joys of unit living.

    • A beginning of joy it is :) and now I get to know what my neighbors are having for dinner as soon as the lift door opens

Is there a led light on the remote that is supposed to light up when you press the button?

After opening up the remote, try a drop of isopropyl alcohol around the base of the button and press the button a few times so that the alcohol goes into the contacts and hopefully cleans them. If the contacts are exposed you could also try putting the drop of isopropyl alcohol onto the end of a cotton bud and rubbing the contacts with that.

This worked for my 20 year old remote.

  • Wait… this sounds like my apartment lol.

  • Sound better than my apartment strata when I had to organise my own guy out.

  • Ermmmmmmmmmm, I just bought a $5 remote from eBay China and programmed it myself. All the programming instructions were available for download from the manufacturer website. Took all of about 10 minutes, and a step ladder.

  • Price from the garage company is most likely $200 with the strata agent charging the rest.

I've ordered remotes online (proper original remotes not chinese verison) and they we're $40 each.

All you need then is access to the control panel and its easily programmed.

  • I did it myself too. Send a pic of your remote. I might be able to do it for you for $50.
