Garmin Nuvi 1690 GPS for $165 at Officeworks

70

Officeworks has this Garmin GPS unit on clearance at $165. ORP $499 (On Garmin's website). I've just purchased US maps from Garmin's site using 10% coupon I got after registering the product.

Seems to be cheap for GPS with 4.3" (10.9cm) screen, spoken street names, latest maps for Australia/New Zealand, preloaded speed/red light camera info, school zone speed info.

Device also has advanced lane guidance, bluetooth and access to services for 1 year including weather updates, fuel prices, flight arrival/departure info etc.

Hopefully those that need a GPS find this post useful

  • Forgot to mention that the cheapest I could find it on Staticice was $441 and $379 (ex shipping) through myshopping.com.au - so definitely much cheaper at Officeworks than anywhere else…

  • wow very nice find then

How does this compare to say the tomtom xxl 540?

I'm not too keen on paying $99 per year after 12 months to have the online functionality.

yeah TomTom XXL 540 was $149 and would like to know which 1 is better?

    • Just done some research and found this…

    • Garmin was offering free lifetime maps at one stage. i remember see it on the display boxes/catalogues. not sure if it's still available…..

      • Nah, that deal ended at the end of January I believe.

I purchased a Garmin Nuvi 1390T for $228 with that lifetime map deal. I guess from the point of view that I'd want my maps to be up to date (esp with all the road construction in Brisbane), I think I still got a good deal as those map upgrades will cost an arm and a leg later on.

Luckily, I don't need speed camera notice as I don't speed anyways… only ever had one speeding ticket and that was because some prick didn't let me in their lane and mine was ending… sped up at the point where there was a speed camera.

        • Good thing you dont need speed alerts as Garmins speed camera alerts cannot be heard.

        • @Laser, if you're going to comment, at least comment on this product.

Sorry, it may have been me. Probably sucks; but I can only assume as I have a clean record.

      • Yup. I remember buying the same Garmin unit for $249 from Officeworks just before the end of that deal so I got the lifetime map updates.

The deal ended in January. I just got in.

Where there's 1 it will most likely be a display.

    • wow nice!

Where there's 1 it will most likely be a display.

however, you can still buy it for better discount

      • Correct, generally 5% off, further if its damaged/missing bits.

    • so none in SA?

Trinity Gardens have 1, but it appears to be reserved for a STO (Store Transfer Order, or something)

        • thanks for that, where did you go to check stocks level?

        • probs work there, using internal system to check the stock list.

  • how much were the US maps with the discount? Were they easy to load? Does this give you US and AUS maps?

My experience with Garmin GPS has been crap so far. My Garmin Nuviphone A50 has only visual alerts for safety cameras, and no sound alerts. Even the visual alerts work randomly. In summary, crap for navigation.

i wouldn't necessarily compare a GPS device to a GPS phone. but fair point.

That's a completly different product to this. Vote on this item or don't vote.

      • Perhaps but its the same customer support and they're completely crap. Do a Google search on Garmin Australia support and you'll see I'm not the only one complaining. About as bad as Vodafail. Buy a TomTom/Navman/Mio if you want reliable GPS.

    • I have the exact same phone and find it good for what it is. I got it for $199 and think that was a bargain. I think you need to get some perspective. The A50 is primarily a phone with GPS as an extra.

    • Perhaps you should try a Garmin nuvi before passing judgment on a totally different product. I have 2 units, and neither exhibit any of the problems you described.

    • not even a valid neg. you should find a better price on the SAME item to neg a deal mate

  • Could not checkout.
I do not think any are left at officeworks
I have been using Garmin Nuvi for the last four years, and very happy with it!
