Software updates for my 8" one (AU retail model) seem to have ceased as of early this year. Security patch level is currently at 1 January 2018.

    • +5

      There’s that Samsung quality.

    • Yeh, my Tab S2 T819 (Security patch level is 1 August 2017) and A6 10.1" only update to Android 7.0…

      SERVICE !!!!!!!!!!

  • Damn got mine last year for $100 more

  • How old is this model?

    • About 2 years old.

  • +10

It is a shame that android device makers don't support their devices for more than 2 years. This is where apple does 100x better job and creates brand loyalty despite generally having inferior specs

    • Arguably inferior specs but superior performance, usability, quality and much longer usable life.

      Hmmm, hard decision……

The budget 2018 iPad has far, far better CPU/GPU performance. The Samsung is less powerful than the 4-year old iPad Air 2.

        • +2

All true. However you have not talked about the reason why the budget iPad is…well, budget. Its screen is mediocre, and screen quality matters for a lot of tablet users.

If you are buying the s2 in 2018 you are basically paying for the panel. The AMOLED panel on the s2 remains superb and far outclasses the panel on the 2018 iPad (which isn't even laminated).

          • @Fiximol: I guess each device is better for specific purpose than the other

I have multiple ipads and multiple android devices scattered around the house. If i want to browse or do emails or that sort of thing i reach for the ipad air 2, but for media consumption on the train the samsung tab s is far superior for me due to the screen ratio and quality

          • +1

@Fiximol: Its screen is far from mediocre - it puts out a lot more light than the S2 (~510 vs 350cd/m²) and still covers the full sRGB colour spectrum. Off-axis viewing is also superior.

You'd really have to love the AMOLED display to want the S2, as everything else is very sub-par in comparison, as much as I love Samsung. Side-by-side with the iPad to my S8+'s AMOLED, I don't really notice a difference in usage unless it's a very dark room, and even then it isn't a deal-breaker…

          • @Fiximol: 0.5mm thinner for the win…Lighter than CrApple too :) mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
            And no doubt better VALUE…..

Edit: I don't believe I'm giving wrong information, why the negs :(.

          Anyway, to substantiate my claims:
          Review with Benchmarks.
          More benchmarks.
          More for good measure.

    • The original Pixel is still being supported… Pixels get a minimum 3 years of support.

Security updates. Not OS updates. Mean while the five year old iPhone 5s just iOS 12.

This, and the shitty hardware on Android devices, is why a few months ago I switch back to iOS after using a Nexus 6, Redmi Note and a Nexus 4.

        • -2

I have tried iOS. I didn't like how they throttled your device every year as a way of forcing obsolescence.
Also take the iPad line up for instance - the iPad 4 and iPad Air can have iOS 12 but they are still missing multitasking features from like iOS 9!

Also now that Apple is hitting a slump in iPhone/iPad sales they are increasing the prices to cover the lack of units sold and are now refusing to report how many iPhones sell. Apple was able to raise the average selling price for an iPhone by 28%. At this point, they aren't being "loyal" to their customer base. They are exploiting them.

          shitty hardware on Android devices

You've literally tried a cheap Chinese phone and 2 Nexus phones. Google admits it themselves that they didn't really start trying until they released the Pixel line. Plus you are pushing your experiences on an old Android phone on to a new(er) Android tablet.

Anyway I wish not to turn this into a massive iOS vs Android debate.
Personally in my life I see no need for a tablet from either - a convertible/detachable laptop running Windows is good for me.

I didn't like how they throttled your device every year as a way of forcing obsolescence.

That's not why they did it. As batteries get older, they can't sustain the CPU running at the same performance. At this point there are two options. 1) Continue as normal and experience random shutdowns. 2) Underclock the CPU to have a slower, but at least stable device.

With my Nexus 6, Motorola went with the random shutdown option. Let me tell you, having a 18 month old device decide to shut down, even with ~20% battery randoml,y wasn't only annoying, it was dangerous. I'd rather have a slow device than be stuck somewhere y yourself with a device you can't turn on (even though you still got 20% of juice left).

Now let's talk about fixing that battery. With Apple, you walk into an Apple Store and get it fixed immediately and your device is back to running at full performance (free under warranty or very reasonable price outside of warranty). Lets compare that to Android devices. First you have to send it interstate to a third party repairer (apparently they think everyone lives in Sydney), then wait two weeks or more for them to look at it, then hope it the courier returns the device because the repairer isn't responsible for devices lost in transit.

I'll take the Apple option, thank you.

You've literally tried a cheap Chinese phone and 2 Nexus phones

The Nexus 4 was a budget phone. The Nexus 6 was not. It ranged from $899 - $1099 at launch. At the time, this was very much a premium device.

Google admits it themselves that they didn't really start trying until they released the Pixel line.

Considering all the issues with the Pixel hardware. I'd argue they still aren't trying. Or if they are, their best effort is still pathetic.

running Windows is good for me

            Shudder.

            • @PainToad: Few points because I couldn't be bothered to have a to and fro with someone who is obviously pro-Apple. There's nothing wrong with that, just accept that some people are going to prefer Android.

              • A lot of people had the iPhone 6S, if I was being punny I would say it was the iPhone Success. Including me (for a short time, sold quite quickly). The glass down the bottom (nearish the home button) would spontaneously crack on many models. I treated that phone like a newborn because I know how fragile they are, it still cracked! Apple quoted me $220 or so to fix it. And that's when I sold it. I wasn't going to play that game.
              • btw there's a lot of phone repair shops (that do batteries) just walk in walk out. You can even go with Telstra if you want. That's the case in Sydney at least.

              • Did I mention prices?? Apple was a viable alternative until they decided to make an iPad more expensive than a Surface Pro or an actual laptop (variants can cost more than a Mac even!). That affordable iPhone XR? Only Apple could call a phone that's $1279 for the base model affordable.

              • Just a quick thing about all the Pixel 2's supposed problems: the only one I've got is a random camera crashing app that lasted around a week. A few of my friends also have pixels and haven't received any major problems. I could talk about the many teething issues with iPhones (including how to bypass the lock screen in the newest iOS) if you want?
    • Ive never had an apple phone before but Androids these days are disappointing. Tempted to give iPhone a go!

At this price I would rather buy the iPad 2018,android tablet is useless

    • +2

But my samsung tab s is still working fine. What seems to be wrong with the old android tablets?

      • Yeah I'm running a tab S 10.5 4yr ago.
Its our main device and still works really well. I haven't have rooted it to clean out the bloatware.

    • Where are you buying a 2018 iPad at this price??

    • +3

if you want to add storage on your tablet (for loading movies, songs etc), android is the only option

  • I’ve seen it cheaper waaay too many times. Used on gumtree can be bought at 150$.
samsung s2 WAS a good tablet

  • Still loving my S2 after a couple of years of use. Great tablet.
