  • Anyone on here able to let us know how they stack up to the Sony and Bose?

    • -1

I have the PXC550. Good sound quality, better than the Bose QC35. Noise canceling is not as strong as the Bose. The Sony still has the issue of the cracking headband.

      • Apparently you’re not correct about the cracking - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/402283#comment-6352766

        • 1st and 2nd gen Sony wh-1000xm still had the cracking headband. https://us.community.sony.com/s/question/0D50B00004JW8ZLSA1/…

For 3rd gen which was just released, we need to wait a few months to see if there are any complaints.

One plus that I see for the WH-1000xm3 is that it charges really quickly via USB-C. And the sound quality will probably be better than PXC550. Waiting for a audio quality comparison review.

@Sleepycat3: We have sold several thousand of the WH-1000XM2 and not a single return has been a cracking band issue.

            • @sm007h: Exactly… Xm2 has been solid without cracking issues..

I have the PXC550 and love them. Having said that they are no longer #1 - that goes to the Sony XM3 now - better NC than the 550, similar sound quality (but they differ slightly, the 550 is more balanced, the XM3 is more bassy)

Advantage 550 has over XM3 is using it as a cabled headset (and charges at the same time). This is an awesome price though. And the 550 I think is still the lightest set with arguably better build quality.

The Bose is not even in the running any more.

      • Couldn't agree more. Bose is aging with bad audio quality. Used to be best with noise cancelling but xm2 already equal or beat it slightly, but the xm3 has blown it away. Sony audio is probably best, but heard the pxc550 has unrivalled call quality.

        • Can confirm. Call quality is amazing and the talk through function is extraordinary.

I had them but unfortunately had to sell them because I found the clamping force too strong and I couldn't wear them for more than 10 mins before it getting uncomfortable.

However, having borrowed and tried the Sony XM3 and Bose QC35II from a friend, I have come to find the PXC550 to be a good alternative (if your head is not as big as mine).

I liked the multi-device connectivity, great sound quality and auto-on/off feature when you unfold/fold the right earcup. The NC was good, although I would rate it behind the XM3. The case wasn't the best, but the phone call quality was one of the better ones out of the three and the other caller could actually hear me. The Captune app worked well and I liked the touch controls on the right earcup.

Depends on what you can put up with and what is a deal-breaker for you. In the end, after having tried all three over-ear headphones, I went for the Sony WI-1000X in-ear NC earphones because I didn't like wearing over-ear headphones while commuting - they were too big and hot for me. YMMV.

    • As someone who rides a motorbike and will spend the extra $$$ on a helmet just to reduce weight, I’m curious to see what kind of big head you have…

I’ve got these, and myself and 3 other people that have these all marvel at how comfortable they are, even after having them on for 10+ hours on regular flights.

But I’ll keep your comment in mind before next time I recommend these to anyone else!

    • I agree, my head is not that big, but for the PXC550 to fit, I have to extend the cups to their maximum extension.

    • I've had to give up good cans in the past for exactly this reason (my head isn't so small), but I've found my PXC550s to be exceptionally comfortable - I've had no trouble wearing them for 8 hour flights, and occasionally 10 hour work days. The padding is very soft, they don't press on my ears, and I only need occasional adjustments to the band. Noise cancelling is very good and no complaints about the sound, even if they don't quite match up to my Stax.

YMMV of course, but in my experience they're perfectly fine on a medium-large noggin.

    • remember to get some foam tips (e.g comply foam) for your Wi-1000X, its will improve the audio and NC :D
