What? So you just earn 30% of the rental? That's ridiculous lol.

Not that I'll ever rent out my car but this is ridiculous lol I have no idea how this even considered a "deal"

    • +3

I guess you also get free parking and a car wash. I agree with you though, it seems like a terrible deal for the owner of the car, especially if the person who rents your car thrashes it.

      Edit:
Could be an easy 30% earner for someone who doesn’t care about their car, (e.g., leased vehicles, etc)

Thank you John for your message. We pay 25% of the rental back to the lister, but with this offer that increases to 30% for a limited time. You also get a free car wash. I hope you still consider sharing the car with us.

      Regards,
      CarhoodRep

Your offer still sucks. You rent out a $25,000 Nissan X-Trail for $37 a day, of which the owner of the asset gets $12 a day and a free car wash - you guys get $25 a day (for a limited time, of course - normally you get $28 and the owner gets $9) for … um, what exactly? The actual owner of the expensive asset that is taking the risk should be getting the majority, not you.

I don't have a, particular, problem with only gettin 30% on the rental - particularly if the car is fully insured by the organisation. However, I would expect that a dashboard camera is put into the car so it can be determined what the car has been doing whilst rented, e.g. if it has a bingle, is driven excessively fast, used in a robbery, etc.

    • Thank you for your message. Carhood staff takes photos at drop off and pick up times at each rental, however it is strongly recommended you take your own photos to support any potential claims. Renters are responsible for any fines or infringements incurred during the reservation. If you receive a notification of a fine or infringement, please notify us. We will organise a statutory declaration or reimburse you for the charge. Sometimes you will be required to fill out a statutory declaration to nominate Carhood. We will in turn nominate the relevant renter.

      • So no dashboard camera then? I think I would pass.

        • Thank you for the feedback. This is something we are definitely considering for the future. I hope you still consider sharing with us in the future.

          • @CarhoodRep: You are the marketing guy, I doubt you are actually "considering" it.

I bet you don't even know the logistics of what it would take to do what he is saying.

Don't just smile and nod at everyone.

            • @samfisher5986: Hi Sam,
Steve here (Director & Founder). Owners are more than welcome to install their own dashcams to their vehicle. Carhood conducts a thorough condition report each and every time the vehicle enters & leaves the warehouse. Although the chance of damage is extremely rare (less than 0.1%), we understand how important it is the vehicles are returned in the same condition as when they are left. As such, our thorough condition report process ensures these anomalies are picked up by.
Carhood management is also considering dashcams for our owners, however we more than welcome owners to use their own.

              • @Carhood Support: You don't check the car mechanically to see if it has been abused, which is what many renters do to some degree.

You need a dashcam facing on the road recording GPS for speed etc, as well a a dashcam facing the people driving.

The fact is that nobody wants to rent a car with a dashcam watching them and recording their voice.

I would assume they would unplug my dashcams if I rented my car.

You know how I know? Because if I rented a car with a dashcam I would unplug it straight away.

                • @samfisher5986: If that was the rule and you unplugged the dash cam then that is, probably, the last time the company would let you rent. I agree that having a dashcam back into the cabin would be something I am uncomfortable with, but I would have no objection to renting a car that had a dashcam out onto the road. I think these things will become common in the future in rental vehicles to enable the rental company to determine if their vehicles are being misused or abused. I would, presume, that rental car currently have GPS in them to track what they are doing.

                  • @try2bhelpful: If dashcams was the rule, then nobody would rent the car to begin with…

Why would you choose to have people listening to your private conversations? A dashcam out to the road will still record that.

          • @CarhoodRep: When the cameras are available then I will consider this as an option. I also agree I'm not sure what the logistics would be but I wouldn't be comfortable not knowing what my car was being used for.

Read the fine print, if your car isn't rented by someone and you leave it for less than 72hrs they charge you $25 per 24hrs for the parking.

Most of the cars listed are older than what you'd get from one of the big name companies for a similar price. I fail to see the appeal as a renter.

    • So then 0-72 hours is basically gambling.

      Urge to neg rising….

      • This is still far cheaper than getting an uber/taxi to and from the airport (average $120 return), parking at the airport (Up to $60/day). Plus if your vehicle is rented out you'll get free parking for the time its not rented out, a free car wash and earn money on your car. All fully insured.

        • +1

$60 each way to the airport? Is this Sydney?

Melbourne has a skybus for $36 return, and Brisbane is very cheap to take an Uber to the airport generally.

Why are you using false maths to try and make your business sound good?

          My last Uber: $60 return
Your Service at 70 hours without a rental: $75

The benefit to not using your service on a 3 week trip is that I don't have "renters" misusing my car.

    • +1

+1, If you're staying for 2 weeks at melb airport you're looking at around $140ish long term outside.. the maths dont add up with this mob if its not rented.

      • If the vehicle is listed for more than 72 hours in length and not rented, you still get free parking.

  • I would never rent my car out, that is just crazy.

There are so many bad things you can do to the car, and people who rent cars are generally not the people you want to drive your car.

    • +3

"people who rent cars are generally not the people you want to drive your car."

Although I have some similar concerns about the service, I don't agree with the above generalisation. People need to rent cars all the time, especially at airports with travellers being an obvious renter, and it doesn't make them people you don't want to drive your car. If that were true, companies like Hertz and so on would be in a world of difficulty.

However, there's obviously a big difference between an asset that is used for rent, and your own vehicle that you may rely on other times, or take care of, that increases the discomfort if it is abused,

      • The renting companies know how their cars are treated and thats included in the rental price.

    • agreed if you see those Car Next Doors getting around alot of them are being driven like dodgem cars by renters, hate to subject my car to some idiot thrashing it and potentially putting it off the road.

  • something something high-yield investment vehicle

This description is misleading. Claiming you get 25% of the rental plus an additional 20% would lead any reasonable person to think that means you get 45% of the rental (which is still ridiculously low - you do less than Uber and they only take 30% of the fare) but yet in the comments you say it's actually 20% of 25% for a total of 30%. Negging based on dodgy confusing maths.

I'd be cautious if you do rent your car out with these guys. I left my car for a month in August and have still not received my payment despite numerous emails.

There were also dents in the car, which unfortunately i didnt notice until i'd drove home (After 35hrs of flying and 2.5hrs extra waiting for carhood to collect me from the airport, i just wanted to get home and sadly did not take photos in their dark car park).
