Is There Such a Thing as Short-Term Laptop Rentals?

Gday dudes and dudettes

So im going overseas for a couple of weeks and would like a laptop to use. I really dont want to buy one when im only needing it for a short time. This got me wondering if there's such a thing as laptop rentals? I just want one to use for a couple of weeks, it would be utter overkill to buy a laptop for this.

Did some Googling and found that either (a) rentals lock you into long-term contracts or (b) they seem to be aimed at corporations rather than individuals.

Can anyone tell me if such a thing exists for private users and if not why not etc; someone should start a business doing this if there isn't one. Alternatively, does such a thing exist in California?

Thanks :)

  • Why not just purchase one?

  • Unlikely to find short term laptop rentals. Imagine you getting someone else's used laptop.

Have you considered a suitable tablet instead?

Buy one and sell it straight after?

How about a tablet as per above?

Agree, buy second hand then sell third hand.

even there's short term rental, it likely cost half of the laptop price for few weeks, then why not pay the other half and own it.

  • So basically the equivalent of the bicycle rental scheme that ended up in trees and rivers.

Laptop rentals exist, but the target market is executive conferences and training etc. Charges are outrageous.

Buy second hand, sell for much the same on return.

Can hire laptop for couple of hours, at uni… Probably get it overnight, if hire within 2 hours of closing time, then due back when uni library is open next. This is what they do for short term 2 hour books for loan, probably same for 2 hours rental of laptops if you need overnight.

For 2 weeks hire/rental Could just buy on an amazing deal/bargain, a laptop over $300 then use the tourist/travel gst rebate thing, claim the GST back.

Keep all packaging, receipt for warranty, and ensure laptop remains in mint condition during your use.

Resell on gumtree or ebay when you get back , still with 11 months warranty, receipt so they can claim warranty, take plenty of pictures to show how immaculate and 'as new' condition laptop is still in. Factory reset/wipe laptop for new user.
Might even make a profit, certainly should lose very little, if buy $300 laptop on great deal, claim back GST, then resell, most I would think would lose is about $100, but probably more like lose $20, or break even

    • So im going overseas for a couple of weeks and would like a laptop to use.

So all op needs to do is fly back to Australia every day. Also, if Op isn't a uni student, he would need to enrol in a degree first. Sounds cheaper to just buy a brand new high end laptop.

      • You are incorrect. Can join uni library without enrollment.
Furthermore, OP is not the only member of this forum. The piece of advice regarding uni laptop was not expressly directed for OP to use for overseas, obviously. Please think before you post :)

I doubt anywhere that hires out laptops is going to let you to take it overseas.
