What Is JB Hi-Fi's Policy on Price Protection?

Hi Guys,

Purchased an item from JB-Hi-Fi 49 days ago and it has now been massively reduced in price. It was a television. As a consumer am I entitled to a Price Protection in the form of a gift card/ refund?

I've done a little digging around online and I may have an argument. I do understand that with time things become cheaper, just annoys me even more when at the time the salesman said he'd bank his house on the fact these won't be on sale for at least a year.

Is it worth trying to contact JB?

Why would you be entitled to a partial refund for something you purchased 49 days ago? Would you expect to pay more when the price goes up?

Obviously not. I just have seen that Price Protection is a thing in this land we call Australia for purchases made up to 60 days after the day of payment. Just asking the question whether I might be entitled to it is all.

What did JB say when you called them?

You have zero legal right to anything unless they offered a policy at the time of purchase

Price Protection is a service offered by some credit card companies. There is no law regarding price protection for consumers. You can check if your credit card offers it if you paid by credit card. The money will be refunded by the credit card company, not JBHifi.

        What a ridiculous sentiment.

"Price Protection" is not a consumer legal right or entitlement. It's something that a business may offer as good will in their policy.
You have the right to ask anything, but unless it's written in their policy, they have the right to reject.

Some credit cards may offer price protection, but thats something you deal with your CC, not with the business you bought it from.

  • Do some credit card companies do price match protection? (If you paid with one). Never heard of JBHifi doing it though.

Nope. Not a consumer right or entitlement. Some credit cards offer price protection as a service, some stores offer it as a service. From memory, JB Hifi is not one of those, but I have heard they sometimes give store credit in these cases (but it's completely up to them - you're not entitled to anything).

Can't really expect them to be clairvoyant.

I can understand given the high moral ground commission-led salesman have always been know to inhabit.

Guys I purchased shares in Westpac the other day and they crashed in the bloodbath.

Do I have any consumer rights to be compensated for the loss?

    Thanks.

    • You're a part owner of Westpac?! Oh boy have I got some issues I need to work out with you…

    • why didn't you short them???

Similar here, but they hadn’t used it.

Just call the store and ask.

  • Sometimes I wonder if these types of posts are serious.

  • Pricematch it.

  • What did they say when you asked them?

  • How dare they make it cheaper after 49 days…. I'm with you…. Have a nice day.

  • …the salesman said he'd bank his house on the fact these won't be on sale for at least a year.

Speak to a solicitor about making a claim on the salesman's house.

  • To all those who negged me I'm gladly going to spend my in-store JB voucher smartly! ;)

    • Well worth asking the question then, did they give full difference in vouchers?

Full difference indeed! Was never going to turn down $250+ worth of JB credit! Just in time for Xmas presents!

      Nice!

      Obligatory "I told you so":

but I have heard they sometimes give store credit in these cases

I think it might've been the (implied/inferred/assumed?) tone in your post that you were somehow entitled to price protection or a refund for the difference.

    • NICE!!
how did you get it, just talked to the manager?

      • Yup, spoke to the Manager and requested the salesman who sold me the TV to be in attendance!

Thought I'd revive this post instead of creating a new one.

I bought a new model M1 Mac mini a couple of weeks ago which wasn't part of the regular 10% off Apple sale (as the model had just been released).
A week later, JB had another 10% off Mac sale which included the new M1 Mac mini.

I spoke to the counter staff and they said JB has a 14 day price protection policy where they will refund you the difference (on the same method you originally paid). You don't need to bring in the product - just the receipt :)

    • Thanks for sharing that with us mate, I was searching for this on their website but couldn't find anything. Probably up to the staff ultimately but good to know

      • Providing another update that this is still valid and seems to be up to manager discretion but up to 14days seems to be acceptable (just arranged a refund on a samsung s22 ultra price drop).

        • Thanks for the update!

  • I bought a TV from JB and 20 days later it was advertised $411 down from my buying price. I went to the store with the receipt and was refunded.

  • just leaving it here, I have done this in past for an iPhone ($150 refund).
