Pocophone is the King of Value.

    • +3

For extra A$100 you get Super AMOLED display and NFC. I will pick Mi8 any day….

Then there is the HD video problem with Pocophone.

      • all that less the notch …but then, it's a matter of personal opinion though :)

      • Mi8 is prone to overheating and drops the performance as a result. The Poco does not with a heat pipe system.
        https://www.gsmarena.com/so_whats_up_with_the_xiaomi_mi_8_be…

No SDCard etc.. so it's horses for courses I suppose.

        • Yes and that's why Pocophone is thicker, not that I care …only if it has proper NFC

I am not a gamer so 260K Antutu is more than enough for me.

My requirement was very simple, 6GB / 128GB+, Oreo+, full NFC and a ok dual lens camera. I have not find one cheaper than this one.

  • +3

Just a note, no band 28 (but has NFC).

    • Thanks for letting us know! I need B28 :(

  • +1

It's bit too much for no band 28 phone.
If you are only using Vodafone network, no issues at all but still too expensive for giving up band 28.

    • It's like 1/3 of the price of iPhone and is still too much?

      • +1

You must be fairly new here….

Typical OZB mind set, no B28 + china made + overseas stock + over $500 flagship = Rip off / Junk

Funny how someone would think a china phone maker can get parts like SD845, Super AMOLED, LPDDR3, UFS 2.1 flash in super cheap price hence their flagship should be super cheap too… Guideline price of these part is openly available if you know where to look and put together other overhead we can see the margin of these China flag ship are quite thin.

The thin margin comes with the worse support and services compare to the big brands. You do get what you pay for, its that simple.

        • Of course it's NOT that simple.

When you buy Samsung, you pay for marketing and those TV ads and those huge stores and stands at jb hifi etc

When you buy Xiaomi, you don't pay those. As simple as that.

        • Can you post up the prices for those parts? Genuinely curious

          • @m0tyrider: This article made quite a headline:

            https://www.zdnet.com/article/samsung-galaxy-s9-this-is-how-…

Bear in mind they are calculating pure material. R&D, manufacturing, Logistics, marketing….. are all excluded.

@Nikoris is correct that marketing cost a lot but so does services, logistics….etc Xiaomi's business model is very lean and reportedly no so great customer services. That's is the trade off when you have almost the same spec but paying half the price.

Love that these have quick charge 4.0 and my samsung galaxay 8 is still rocking 2.0. S9 is still 2.0 and the new pixel is 3.0.

    • Pixel doesn't use QC, they use PD like Apple.

  • +1

Here we go with the B28 again…
    I wonder why I even border….

Just a note, please find me an alternative that has:
    SD845, 6Gb Ram, 128GB+ storage
Proper NFC, Super AMOLED, Dual cam with OIS
    and all for A$600 delivered…..

    • +2

      why wouldn't you border?

    • +1

Even with all those features, the phone will be useless without reception xD

      • Lack of LTE B28 does not mean no reception, nor does it mean it is "useless" even if it is offline.

        • +1

Band 28 is good for indoor 4G….better range, better building penetration inherent in the lower frequency

          • +1

@dealhunter52: Not saying it isn't. But just because Band 28 doesn't work for this phone doesn't mean it can't fall back to UMTS 850/900 (which at times is quicker than B28 especially when the LTE cells are oversubscribed or down in the previous Telstra Outages).
Either case, just over-reaction from most OZB users on the lack of B28.

            • @bchliu: Over-reaction!

Here I let you decide if it is, as it has been discussed earlier.

              https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/4694195/redir

Here's the no bull answer. Band 28 (or B28 or 700mhz) is important for at least Telstra. Why?
To summarise, there are several bands that are used by 4G. The number of towers for each band is the kicker!!

              700Mhz has 2012 locations
              900mhz has 61 locations
              1800mhz has 3729 locations
              2100mhz has 60 locations
              2600mhz has 178 locations
              Data courtesy of oztowers.com
              Obtained from here https://crowdsupport.telstra.com.au/t5/Coverage-Network/Tels…

              • @dealhunter52: Again, you can fall back to 3.5G UMTS 850Mhz ("NextG") for as much locations as the 700Mhz band. There isn't any clear public documentation from Telstra (I use to work for them) - but you will find that majority of people on LTE frees up UMTS to considerably fast speeds (up to 21Mbit/sec). I'd rather be on a moderate 12Mbit UMTS connection than say a congested 8Mbit LTE connection.

Data and speeds is subject to the time slicing element of sending data through channels. LTE does not guarantee you will get 200Mbit+ connections as much as Telstra likes to Bullshit in their advertising. That is the maximum connected speed assuming no one else is using the cell. Typical connections will drop it down to 20-30Mbit on most city cells depending on the concentration of users on the same tower.

        • If you wanted a offline phone why not buy a cheaper device (ie tablet?)

          • @m0tyrider: Yeah.. why not? Except this device is perfectly capable of being connected even in lower speeds and tech.

  • I know its hard to compare but thinking either this or the Google Pixel 3 XL

    Thoughts?

    • +2

Pixel if you can afford it, Wireless Charging, ip 68, australian warranty, band 28, higher res screen, better support, way better camera and google cloud storage if you use that

      • The camera ranks pretty high in dxomark

    • +1

This has a 3.5mm audio jack.

Pixel will probably have longer firmware support, though.

Neither supports expandable storage via micro SD cards. For that you'll need to get a Samsung Galaxy S9 in this spec bracket.

  • PS why not wireless charging!!!

  • +1

Seems good for the specs, but when spending 600, having warranty is pbly a must have… If it dies, it becomes a $600 brick, maybe spend the extra for a s8 or s9

    • That is another reason why you only buy this with paypal and not with that Aliexpress crap. You got at least 6 month protection.

I have great concern of this too but I recon compare to anything similar with local warranty wil cost over 1K, its worth a try.

      • +1

Yeah you have 6 months protection, but samsung phones have 24 months plus acl/statutory, and have you ever dealt with gearbest support before? Better off trying to get help from your dog than those stores

        • Say it lasted a year and die, then I hit brick wall with GB. No worry I buy another phone for $600 then. End up the same bill but I got to use a new phone.

Got to make sure I back up my data properly though.

Trust me I know the pros and cons. I own a S9+ 256gb which I put insurance on it with Optus……..

        • LG G7 Thinq was $699 yesterday and $719 earlier. Further reduction could be coming as well.

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/412562
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/411779

Litter bit inferior in specs but you get 2 years local warranty and (I know its going to annoy you) it has band 28. I would pick that over this any day.

          • @dealhunter52: Warranty and updates of LG are almost non existence. Bad taste in my mouth from friends' horror stories of G5.

I also prefer the camera set up on MI8 to G7

            • @syswong: Yeah same boat as you, own a s9+ 64gb except I bought it outright, Im guessing you paid for the accidental insurance? Otherwise your wasting money if yout buying extended warranty insurance as that is a scam

              • @Bargain4Days: That is accident and damage from Optus. Was going to stop it after 12 months but now my wife is getting my S9+, I am going to keep it for the whole contract period :)

                • @syswong: Smart move, definitely going to need it… My mum cracked her s8+ 3 times already and complains why us kids have all the latest phones and tech (roll eyes)

  • Grab the 256gb variant on eBay with plusme for a buck less

    • Link

    • The 256 version is not Global Version. You can flash it with Global Rom but you can't re-lock the boot loader.

What this mean is you cannot run Gpay and bank apps with out some software mod.

There is a reason why I stated GLOBAL VERSION…..

$542.86 with plusme and with 8% off gift cards for $500

        • 7272wil fail before I even started my purchase. Massage them twice to confirm if it is global edition that they listed. ZERO reply…..

          Sure wouldn't buy from them.

          • @syswong: I messaged them and was told it's international version.

          • +1

@syswong: FYI, I bought a mi A2 from 7272wil they didn't state it was global but it was when it arrived. YMMV.

        • Check out 7272wil's feedback before buying something at this price!

          • @RedHab: Haha you just destroy all the hard work from the "supporters"

Must mention mymobile_store has it at the a slight lower price and their reps was very responsive. However upon my enquiry they realize they wont have stock for a while so they pull the listing.

Thumbs up for fast response and honest!!

          • @RedHab: With these phones, it's expected to have crap warranty

        • I tried PLUSME, it said "This code has expired".

          • @kampret: Oh yeah it's expired now. It'll come back soon

        • Where can we find the gift cards?

  • wrong posted…

  • I will prefer note 8 or S8+ for the price you pay for Chinese phone with no resale value

    • Each to their own taste, the Xiaomi phones are great phones, really the biggest conns for them is warranty and support, band 28, nfc. Otherwise, they compete even with the latest flagship phones

    • S8 is a big no no. only 4GB Ram and single lens camera setup.

Note 8 well…. you are looking at $800 for a grey import after ebay discount. How much you think you note 8 can fetch after 2 years?

I buy a Xiaomi knowing that I am paying less for a flagship experience which will cost double the price with Samsung. As I said I am using an S9+ 256 now. Looking forward to put them head to head.

  • good find op. got one for my dad.

  • Would you get the mix 2s or mi 8?

    • Pretty close together. Mix for me, although there might be a drop very soon because mix 3 is coming

    • 1 You will find it difficult get actual stock for Global version of Mix 2s.
2 the front camera is very annoying.

If you can wait then get Mix 3 when the price come down. The slide cam look and sound really nice!!
