Mid range tablet for the kids, travelling in December

Hi Guys, I'm looking for a mid range tablet to help keep the kids entertained while on an international flight in December.

I have been looking at the Galaxy Tab A 10.5 for $359 and the Lenovo Tab 4 10" Plus for $299.

Are these the best deals I am likely to find or should I wait until closer to Christmas?

How about a book? Much cheaper and better for the kids all around?

    (burn the heretic? )

Books are so non interactive they'd be bored in 5 mins, no animations or sound. Gotta remember digital kids are raised on electronic babysitters these days and go through withdrawals without them. Hee Hee

    • A bunch of kids books might not last 8hrs.

      • Definitely, we will be bringing books too but a tablet takes the pressure off mum and dad for a while at least. The Reading Eggs app is amazing and educational too so tablets aren't all bad.

        • Yes you need multiple options, unless you really lucky and they sleep.
If they old enough can they use in-flight entertainment? Some kids headphones could be handy too

    • Weight limits makes it hard to take a lot of books and I'm not sure the collected works of Dickens will keep my 4 year old occupied for long.

As a kid my sister and I just rotated the window seat and admired the world. Kept us entertained even at night with an over wing seat.

    • You were spoilt :)
I sat in very middle seat of plane, in smoking section, holding a stinky blanket over my head (as better than smoke), for my only international flight as a kid.

  • That Samsung you mentioned would be good for the job. I bought a similar model a couple of years ago for the same purpose. Might also be worth your while to invest in a power bank, pending how long your flights are.

    • Thanks for the feedback on the Samsung. Yeah a power bank would be a good investment, I think most international flights have some USB outlets these days too so I'm hoping I can recharge onboard.

      • The USB outlets on planes can’t power a tablet.

I would get the one with the most RAM you can afford.

A couple of battery packs is a good investment for future car rides etc as well.

    • Tbh I would recommend iPad 9.7 inch since it. Has more power than these a lot and for only like $50 more or less on sale

  • In the 80s I played Puck Monster 10 hours straight, no mute technology back then either. Da na na.

Haha, I remember my brother opening up an old handheld game and unsoldering the speaker because my parents couldn't take the music. Those were the days.

How bout iPad? It cost about $100 more, but they might be able to use it in school if they have BYOD classes.
