Name for IT Business Startup - Travelling Australia

Hello there OzBargain Ladies and Gentlemen,

You're brilliant minds are needed.

After 10 years working in the IT industry for government departments and large organisations I have decided to startup an IT business on the road mainly tapping into local small towns and caravan parks while travelling Australia.

To make this happen I will be investing in some branding with a graphic designer and ordering some signage and business cards etc.

THE CHALLENGE I have is finding a catching business name that catches the attention of young and old(mainly old) and a name that tells a story about what kind of service you can expect from a patient, experienced and accurate IT professional(s).

Some ideas so far:

Platinum IT assistance and learning - Residential and Business (To me this name targets more exec client and not rural customers IMO)

Young Nomad IT Support (Yes we are young nomads travelling in a caravan living full time on the road. I'm thinking this name is not expandable.)

About the IT business:

  • Mobile Device Support
  • Computer Software and Hardware support
  • Mobile device and computer coaching
  • Home automation - Smart home support and installation
  • Network installation, support and security equipment
  • Device Security, data backups and cloud storage
  • Internet Service Provider support
  • Mobile Phone(4GX,4G,3G) coverage consultation,Installation and support

What a great online community we have and I am always very appreciative of the help and advice given and I try to give back where I can.
THANK YOU
:)

You might have to wait for a few of the older or actual rural folks to chime in I'm afraid. I think I'm jaded to the point that any name that would appeal to them would come across as maybe a bit corny to me.

        I'll throw these out though:

[Last Name] and Co IT Services (having a last name, to more traditional folks, might convince them you're putting your name behind your work, so to speak?)

Northern Queensland IT (or other name for the area - I feel like rural people have more of a loyalty to location)

Both of these let you leveraged any personal or family connections to the area too.

    FindMeIT

    Suggestions for your website;

    • Have a map of Australia with your approximate GPS location.
    • Have a 'Contact us when we're 100KM away from you' form which, when you're close, will email the potential client saying you're in the area to make a booking. You'll need to have some programming skills to work out the GPS boundary and trigger alerts.

I'm also assuming that you're doing this for a travelling experience and not for money? As your travel costs will far outweigh the amount people will be willing to pay.

Having the above gimmicks (with advertising/media) will put you in the world wide spot light, as I doubt anyone has done anything similar. This could be good advertising income, which may fund you more than the actual work.

Once it gets big enough, you can change the way your website operates, and create a following which other IT professionals can do the same. Then, you get the work via your website and contract out to other FindMeIT travelling contractors.

If the above all works, and you start rolling in the money, hire me. I have a certain set of skills which may compliment you.

      thanks rompa.

Your idea is unique and I like where your going with this. I will definitely put this into thought for functionality that can be tied into the business.

We have been on the road for 4 years but total living in the caravan time is 2 years as we stopped in Townsville to work and save renting a unit.

I currently pay $210 per week site fees in cairns and my site backs onto a creek and rain forest with Kingfisher Birds, Ulysses butterfly, platypus etc. so living isn't that expensive on the road and my partner is a teacher and finds work in most locations. So far its been mind blowing and truly an experience of a lifetime.

Your right about people not wanting to pay much for IT, this is true. This is a lot harder when you are not an organised business hence why I am reaching out to startup this business and get more advertising reach into towns and communities. I'm actually planning on doing classes for seniors and other social groups and teach them about how powerful their mobile devices are as a tool in this modern world.

      • Local councils could be a good source of business for you then, they could pay you do some courses that would ordinarily be to expensive to pay someone to travel there and do. You could possibly then also get some follow on work, might even be worth doing a free 1hr course for local chamber of commerce that could also lead to some more work.

Let me tell you as a highly qualified marketing expert of over 40 years…

Branding matters very little! So dont waste much time on it.

SO YOUR CHALLENGE OP IS ALL WRONG!

Its how well you comunicate your message to your target audience that matters the most —- 80%

    This means:
1 identifying your target market, thier specific needs and what matters to them the most
    2. Creating an appropriate message that addresses the needs of your target market
    3. Using the appropriate comunication vehilce to get your mesage across to them/ i.e. communication channels which they use (not you)

      1. Proofreading, cos they're often grammar fiends 😉

        Like the OP’s first sentence?

    • I like where your going with this bloke ;)

      • +1

im actually being pretty serious with it!

the problem most I.T. "nerds" have is that they exclusively think like, well, an I.T. nerd! (like sheldon cooper!) they completely fail to understand their target demographic, ie: the complete opposite of what they are: computer illiterate people. you need to give the people what "they" want, not what "you" want.

where the regular IT nerd will think something like "advanced IQ computational technological repairs inc" is a good name, it completely baffles the ordinary joe, who, surprise surprise, is your customer!

keep it simple, throw in some humour and you will appeal to the masses. like jims mowing: there is absolutely no confusion as to what service this guy does. whereas if his name was "jims horticultural and greeneries maintenance services" the regular joe would skip this as it sounds too fancy (and expensive).

        • I do agree with you Mr Disco and I am listening

          • @BrewstersBargains: DiscoJango is spot on. Older folk don't refer to this stuff at IT. There are a large portion who probably don't know what IT stands for (cue IT Crowd reference). They call them computers. It's not a laptop, notebook, desktop etc. It's a computer to them.

    Make IT Work

  • I run(am?) a small 1 man MSP in Melbourne and prior to that while going through uni did the whole go to people's houses and fix their computer thing.

I'd be happy to have a chat about my experiences and provide any insight I might be able to given my experience. PM me if you'd like to have a chat.

  • Use the formula people who drive utes use for naming their businesses

    Advanced/Prestige (insert trade here) Solutions

Requires no thought and you won't stand out at all. You're welcome.

  • I think one of the issues you may have, especially with older people, is the fact you may not be there next time they have a problem.

You're going to have to market to each area you travel to, and all that marketing expense is wasted as soon as you leave for the next stop.

I can see it being a workable solution for small towns where there is no IT guy in residence, but the impression I get from most media, is that country towns are a tight-knit community, and they're probably not going to appreciate a guy trying to muscle-in on the local IT guy.

Caravan parks for travellers, though, could be an excellent opportunity. Cheap to advertise to the residents, and I would think most caravaners these days would have IT needs.

    • Yes when the oldies find out I am a IT Guy they approach me to get them out of trouble. This is where the idea started my fiancee got sick of me doing it for free

  • Down Under IT

  • Get elvis style haircut.
    advertise on grey nomad websites.
Get the major websites to do a major article on you, based on the travelling elvis IT mentor, should make a somewhat interesting article.
1 of my psych tutors has terrible troubles with developing rapport with his older patients. He dresses more like them, bought an old retro looking coat from vinnies, he was still struggling, but dressing more like them seemed to help.
You could call yourself E.L.V.I.S IT . Make an acronym outta elvis.

For making your name though, ask around with your target audience age group, and ask them what words they think of, and use themselves in referring to technology you are advertising. Eg. An older lady spoke to me when I'm waiting for my Uber Eats, and she said "I hope you enjoy your Uber" . Another olde person knew the word 'data' but didn't really know what it is so much, though it was strange when phones facebook stopped working after data ran out. Even the word 'online' you would probably get many different understandings of what that is, within an elderly target audience.

Generally, most old people won't fully understand alot of the terms you might want to use in a name, so be aware of this.

When you get a short list of names, then go and ask 10 or more older persons, and ask what do they think of the name ? What would they expect such a business to be ? ie. Does the name appropriately communicate your message and your service portfolio, to the target audience. Or do they think something different, or maybe think that you would help only with 1 of the services you seek to advertise.

    • Great advice and I have done this already on a small scale but I will be taking some names to happy hour once I have a bunch of great ideas
      Thanks flanders
