Just putting this here before someone asks -

Comments on past Kogan mobile deals have said that you need to port out for 1 month in order to be considered a new customer.

    • Is this verified? You can't port out then in with a different email?

    • Does this mean I actually have to port out to a different carrier for at least 30 days, then port back to Kogan to get back the new customer offer? Or can I just leave the number unsubscribed to a plan for 30 days?

      • +2

Yes, you need to port out for at least 30 days before you can port same number back into Kogan.

        • +1

So what can you do? Activate on a new number at least?

          • +1

@stockpimp: Most of us here use these to add/supplement cheap mobile data and Yes, we mainly activate these as a new number ( can have up to 4-5 activated in your name using same payment card ), and sometimes port our main number every so many months if we are happy using Vodafone for our main number.

See my comment below from 11:40 how we use these sims often.

Just be warned that if you port over sometimes as mentioned a few times on here, can take many days to sort out port ( like me this week coming from Catch Connect which uses Optus ). Kogan blames Catch Connect, and they blame Optus ( technical problem ), and after multiple calls to Kogan and Catch checking that all my details match both systems ( sometimes just a spelling mistake or wrong DOB can cause problems ). So either Optus is playing funny games not wanting to release my number, or Kogan is stalling after seeing my multiple porting history, I will never know as all telcos only give you some information.

I have had delays before, but not this long and put's me and many others off this process using Kogan as a main number port, although happy with their service in general and love their awesome value. Might have to go all out and get three months or one year next time, just don't like to commit lol.

      • Can anyone confirm it is indeed 30 days? I think I've used the service back few months ago but when I just tried it wouldn't allowed it, says 'Invalid Voucher'.

  • can you use the recharge voucher to recharge existing account?

    • +5

      Please read the first comment.

      • what do you mean? they normally send a sim card through the mail and send the recharge voucher through your email. so what's stopping anyone using it as a recharge voucher to an existing account?

        • +2

If you use a new number should be ok. If you keep your number, you need to port out.

          • @[Deactivated]: will the recharge voucher knows if you are an existing customer? i thought it was a normal recharge voucher code like the ones you buy at Woolies or Coles or any store that sells recharge vouchers

            • +1

@angelkulit025: I tried and it doesn't work for me. You can also try if you want.

              • @ozizoy: there we go, atleast someone already tried and didn't work. I was just waiting someone to try it out. thanks man!

            • +4

@angelkulit025: These deals are NOT "recharge" vouchers. They are for "new" accounts only, where the idea is to entice new customers. Yes, the process "knows" … will not permit you to use it as a recharge on an existing Kogan Mobile number!

Read the deal information … and note you must activate by 30th November.

As a person can own up to 5 sim cards (5 different accounts), then you can use these for a new mobile number, or port number over from a different carrier. See online activation process. It simply will not work as a recharge on an existing Kogan Mobile number.

Ensure you turn off automatic renewal when setting up these "new" accounts online or you will be slugged $49.90 for each 30 days thereafter.

  • I'm signed up and I have upcoming 3 month sim with them but can anyone explain why their 3G/4G works worse than a native Vodafone plan?

    • +2

They are pretty much the same

    • +1

I switched 3 accounts over from Vodafone to Kogan Mobile last year, and we receive the very same service on all. No difference, that I am aware of, at all.

      • +1

I used a vodafone account from my office bathroom, city train stations at peak hour, train going underground ect. Worked better than Kogan in these 3 locations. In office bathroom no service at all! Optus and Telsta had service in this particular bathroom. Vodafone had like 1 bar.

I suspect Kogan uses some sort of secondary frequency in certail locations…

At home and in suburbs it works fine, I will mention

        • +1

We use ours in varying locations and never found any difference. Still not had any call dropouts etc. Where I live Optus, especially, has had many issues, but Vodafone and Kogan Mobile work well. Have travelled quite a bit and the only time I did not receive signals was the remote area on west coast of Tasmania. Other carriers were the same. We received wifi vouchers from accommodation at Cradle Mountain but that was such a pretty pathetic service also.

We use Vodafone data sim cards in Vodafone wifis sometimes. My mother (Frankston) relies on one while waiting for NBN … still. Every so often, couple of months maybe, if service seems iffy there I found turning wifi off and on again after a few minutes seemed to do the trick. I have not had that problem elsewhere though.

    • +1

Kogan works much better than native Vodafone where I live, have no idea why.

  • Will buy if it's 50 cents. Not worth the effort otherwise.

    • +7

      Thanks for letting us know.

    • It's a big heap of value for only $3.90.

  • They take ages to deliver. I had ordered a sim last month, still waiting ….

    • +12

True ozbargainer should have some spare kogan simcards. lol

      • About 6 in my draw

    • Should have received within a week. Contact them.

    • got them within 3-4 days. ordered 2 on separate occasions.

  • so we can activate anytime before end of nov and it lasts 30days after activation?

    • +1

      Yes.

Ensure you turn off automatic renewal when setting up these "new" accounts online or you will be slugged $49.90 for each 30 days thereafter.

  • Just so people are aware, buying multiples of the $4.90 deal is probably more useful than the 90 day Kogan or Catch deals for the purposes of many people using these deals (though I'm struggling with a 2G/4G "dual-SIM" phone…). Beyond getting much more data, you have until the 28th of February to activate the $4.90 SIM (but must buy by the 31st of January, for the time being).

If you have a dual SIM phone it might be more useful to hack Belong referrals for your dedicated number and supplement data with Kogan etc. That way you might get reception if you go bush and won't need to port over as frequently.

    • +2

One drawback I've found with these dual sim phones and supplemental sims for data is if you have a voice line with little to no data, you have the supplemental sim for Data and you receive a voice call, you wont be able to use data on the secondary SIM whilst on a voice call.

Not such a big deal for a short call but if you need to lookup something while on the call, it might not work very well. Data will only work on the SIM that its mapped to on the phone.

      • +3

Yep, can't agree more. As I am a long time sim slut ( over 4 years now ) and have been using mobile data in portable multiple 3G/4G modems longer than that, I was so keen last year to get my first dual sim 3G/4G mobile phone as it sounded like a great idea for people with my use. Got a Moto G5+ which I really like to use, but find using the dual sim feature for the sole use of supplementing extra data bit fiddly and not always so convenient.

It drains your battery on your main phone quickly and also not so good for the reasons mentioned above. Handy for a emergency or back up if you can top up charge with power bank or at work/uni etc.

I find putting that extra data usage sim in a second unlocked ( all bands carrier supported ) phone or portable modem ( can be found really cheaply for $25-$50 ) much more handy as it frees up your main phone.

        • It's not that bad, usually your main sim will have some small amount of data allowance. Portable modems are terrible because battery only lasts a couple of hours so you have to constantly turn it off and on to go through the day.

  • +3

    Thanks, Jack. Excellent Deal :)

    • +1

      Yeah, great deal, Jack!

  • I ordered from the last deal, got a welcome back to Kogan email, and one saying my SIM card has been dispatched. Yet to receive it. Wondering if they consider me an existing customer and won't be sending a new SIM.

Called them and they said to wait until 31st.

    • +1

You can always just order another one for $2 https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-mobile-sim-prepaid-starte… or wont they re-send till the 31st ?

      • They've basically said they won't look into it until 14 days has passed.

I might just order one, but it's annoying that the previous deal was meant to include one.

        • +2

A little tip: When I order from kogan directly, they send the SIM free, I usually order a 2nd SIM card (free) as spare. Just increase the "Free Sim" quantity to 2.

  • Thanks Op. Does anyone know how soon you need to recharge to avoid service number getting disconnected ie how long after 30 days you have before loosing service number ? Cheers

  • +2

    Excellent price.

  • Just be warned that if you port over sometimes as mentioned a few times on here, can take many days to sort out port ( like me this week coming from Catch Connect which uses Optus ). • Nonono you are not getting me this time. Spent $1.95 and couple days later it was 49 cents.

  • Bought one recently and the speed isn't that great. Especially during peak.

  • Wasn't that 49 cents a few days ago?

  • Do these auto renew and if so where do I turn that option off

    • +2

Yes they auto renew if not turned off beforehand. Check under payment method in your account and you’ll see the option to remove card details and stop auto renewal.

  • +1

My 12 mth prepaid with Kogan is expiring at end of month and I woukd like to renew but there are no deals.

What are the options? this deal is for new members only?

    • +1

      Port out for a month

    • I have 3 mobile accounts that I ported to Kogan from Vodafone. Although the 365 day Kogan Mobile pre-paid plans still sound pretty reasonable to me, I will possibly port over to Vodafone for a month or two then look to port back again to Kogan. Seems the only way to score a better deal.

  • +1

Just hope the number wasnt previously owned by someone that got alot of spam.
My current Koagan number gets at least 3 text/calls about spam every day….Courtney must have loved spam ;P

    • My phone automatically blocks most spam these days. I have more daily blocked calls than received ones actually lol.

Somehow some of the calls go to voicemail still but they are not very chatty by then …

      • I don't think the Spam mail is Kogan related as I have retained the same mobile number for at least a decade or so, and ported it over from Vodafone last year… but … now you have me worried lol! 😱

  • These plans confuse me. I thought they were great value, but am I understanding it correctly that I need to add $15/month add on just to be able to send an SMS to someone outside of Australia?

If so, that's a massive deal-breaker that negates any saving. I've never had a pre paid cap where this was excluded.

    • But I bet you paid far more than $3.90 when recharging your previous pre paid plans!

This deal is for 30 days duration though, so don't forget to cancel automatic renewal if you activate.

32 GB data is quite a few emails and attachments you could send in lieu of sms.

      • Yes, but if I actually want to stay on this cap at regular price (or you know, one with lower data) they this charge kills any potential savings.

  • me want $0.49 back

New level of poor support… I was not expecting much, porting my number from Optus to Kogan, to take advantage of the new prepaid deal.
Apparently, the porting failed because the name or account numbers don't match. Then I called support, it turns out, having a Chinese Name and an English name is too difficult for him to comprehend, so he decided to ask for my alternative number, so that he can call me back in 1-2 mins… 2 mins later, he calls me back, and asks all the auth & auth questions (birthday etc.) again; wasting my time and testing my patience; he could have asked to hold me for a further 1-2 mins instead of doing that? After 1 hour of a painful conversation, where is seriously had no idea how to re-submit a port request; he then asked me to email my driver license to the support email address; and thus have done nothing to help. What a waste of time. Then, I get an email back from Kogan saying that email support is no longer available to Kogan customers, and thus I have to call them again.

Seriously, this is a different level of poor customer service. Telstra and Optus is bad, this is just another level of a nightmare. How can someone do idiotic, incompetent, and at times condescending be working in any jobs?

I don't know what to do now, having spent money on the new SIM. Looks like I have to call them again, but I seriously don't have the energy to deal with such terrible company. No email support. Seriously?

  • if anyone is in the market for a Kogan 12 month prepaid 7GB per 30 days, I have one for sale in the classifieds….PM me.
