K-mart sells 5.5L slow cookers for $20 and they're basically the same.

does the sunbeam one boil food too quickly as well?

      • Got the $25 target one and it sure does boil the food. Considering taking it back. Might give it one more try first but I don't like to see so many bubbles coming off my food.

    • Seen the kmart one I have the digital version which is a model up. they are all decent at this level.
I like setting the cook time on the digital models and then it falls back to keep warm mode.

  • This worth it?

We usually do slow cook beef every few weeks using electric stove top

I highly suggest you look at a pressure cooker. After we'd had ours for a while we got rid of our slow cooker. Initial browning and subsequent cooking all in one dish. Better (in my opinion) textures of meat and vegetables done in the pressure cooker compared with the slow cooker. Also makes casserole-type dishes a dinner option without prior planning. Dishes that would usually take hours are done in 30 mins or so of cooking. Dishes like pumpkin soup that usually only take a 15 minutes anyway still seem to turn out better if those dishes are cooked under pressure for those 15 minutes.

      • do you recommend a certain pressure cooker ?

We have Breville the fast slow cooker, essentially a pressure cooker and a slow cooker. Have had it for at least 5 years with no issues except when they had an apparent defect on the rubber rim for the lid which we basically just entered online and they sent one out.

I'd also recommend Breville Fast Slow Cooker. Cuts cooking time by hours, adds saute function (one less thing to clean if you were going to pan fry), and there are countless online Instant Pot recipes that use same settings.

          • @SydStrand: A fast slow cooker??

I thought the whole idea of a slow cooker was to take hours…

If you have gas or induction and love to be in control of your own settings then this is the one I have used for 6 months and works well! Almost 40% less than other ones and works just as well

        • Fissler, buy once for life. I got mine for free being passed down from parents. The gasket still need to be replaced every few years.

      • Good feedback on the pressure cooker.
I've used my slow cooker for many years but I've always thought that the texture and feel of the food feels better whenever I've visited the folks and they have used their pressure cooker.
Certainly worth investigating .. and I do like the idea of a fast and easy casserole dinner option around 30 mins.
        Have you tried risotto?

I actually found the opposite is true. I use my slow cooker more often than my pressure cooker. The flavour and aroma from the herbs and spices takes time to develop, it simply cannot be replicated on pressure cooker with its 30 minutes cooking time.

I would recommend a thermally insulated pot that uses a vacuum to slow cook and doesn’t require ongoing energy costs after the jbtial heat up

Thermos make one but there are plenty alternatives available at Asian grocers.

Just heat up, simmer for 20 mins then chuck in the insulated pot over night or in the morning and it’ll be piping hot and cooked when you get home.
Done it on lots of slow cook cuts like beef cheeks and gravy beef for stews

  • Usually this price when on special.
Had one of these, replaced it with two digital timer ones, the digital timer ones are way better and require alot less attention.

  • I rang Sunbeam recently and I believe they said their old ones contained lead, but don't anymore.

    https://deeprootsathome.com/slow-cooker-leaching-lead/ etc

    • Did they say when they switched to unleaded? I bought mine a couple of years ago.

Sunbeam is a pretty well known Australian brand, I suggest they’re more better in quality and Reliability than unknown brands sold at Aldi, Kmart and target.

      I suggest they’re more better

      PET HATE!!!!

      (Sorry)

  • Highly suggest to buy digital one with timer. I bought kmart one without timer was good results when turned off on time otherwise overcooked. So bought one With timer go out and by the time come home food ready.

    • Yep worth the extra for the smart features, see my post above for the link, got it for around 58-59(digital) at Myer price matched to use a gift card :)

    • Or you could have just bought a $5 electrical plug timer from Bunnings….

      • Doesn't work…you need it to change settings to 'keep warm', not switch off, which could lead to contamination.

        • True. I guess i do mine differently where I set it to cook for a certain time like when i'm sleeping and portion it when i wake up.

  • Last year I bought myself a Breville slow cooker. Everything I made ended up being a burnt mess, even after experimenting with different settings. Dunno if it was faulty or maybe I was doing something wrong.

    • +1

You might want to experiment with the amount of liquid on the recipe and check the evaporation rate every hour or so.

      • Yeah, I use a slow cooker maybe once a month, and have never had issues with burning, presumably because of ensuring there's plenty of liquid for it to stew in. Also, the low setting is almost always preferable to the high one.

  • Highly suggest to buy digital one with timer. I bought kmart one without timer was good results when turned off on time otherwise overcooked. So bought one With timer go out and by the time come home food ready.

    • Errr did you forget you posted the exact same comment above?

      • I think they copied and pasted their comment

        • +3

Guess she really wants people to buy one with a timer.

  • Got this for $15 from The Good Guys after Christmas last year! Works great!
