I'm trying to think of an idea of how all these straws could be used in some way or put somewhere that isn't going to affect the environment, i have no idea though. Any ideas? I seriously don't know what to do when i end up with the odd straw, i'm like a deer in the headlights with that shite. Anyway I'd say dont buy them unless you have some great reason for it and I doubt you do

If everyone just tried to reduce their plastic usage as much as possible, we can make an impact to the amount of plastic being discarded in landfills or that end up in the environment. This isn't about being a tree hugger or a hippie. Everyone can make changes to their behaviour and not have a blasé attitude that one small thing won't make a difference. It's the cumulative effect of quantity and time that will.

I'm a straw user - I got into the habit when I got braces and could never quite break it afterwards. I have been using plastic but now I'm converting to the reusable kinds. Straight metal never worked for me because I'm a straw biter but I have ordered a collapsible metal straw with silicone tips from a Kickstarter - finalstraw and that should be coming in the next month or so. They have a lifetime warranty and can be attached to a key ring so there's no excuse for forgetting them!
As for the cleaning them issue that everyone keeps bringing up - they and other metal straws come with a cleaning brush, and the metal straws are much wider than a standard plastic straw so less places for gunk to get caught.
As for minimising plastic usage, I don't use single use water bottles (biggest waste of money you can find and an environmental disaster), and I use glass storage containers for lunches and the like.

If you need to use a straw please get yourself a stainless steel one. There really is no need for straws, for your 1 minute of use this straw will exist in landfill or worse in oceans for long time. It’s not worth it.
The only reason why straws are not recyclable is because their individual size, not because of the plastic type, heck even unlikely due to contamination from being a food item.
Your pizza box or unrecyclable oily food container (cos I bet most of you won't bother prewashing it) is an even bigger waste than a straw.
That was the thing about that WoW story, it only had littering issues. If many people aren't still bothered to bring in reusable shopping bags, do you think they'd be bothered washing up an SS straw? Or do it without wasting more precious resource is water doing it.

Eh. Everybody going on about metal straws. I've never had to use a straw. Just drink straight from the glass… Single use plastics are on the way out. It's a neg from me due to the ethical and environmental ramifications of this product

I forgot to mention that yes, there are people that actually do need plastic straws, due to an eating/drinking issue or a disability. I don't demonise them in any way but there are reusable straws out there now that can help to alleviate plastic straw use for those. Some examples are silicone straws that are pre-bent and you can even find positionable paper straws that are heavier duty than the ones that you can get in KMart and $2 shops.
Yes, hygiene is a very important issue for these people and one that shouldn't be overlooked but paper straws can be disposed of, and the silicone ones can be extremely well cleaned and even sterilised.

Please use with care. Previously I used to brush off such things until I saw how they really hurt aquatic life. Small changes can really go a long way.
When negative externalities are taken into account (ie 1000 years before plastic straw breaks down), these are poor value compared to paper or metal.
