Telstra Has Free Calls To Japan Until March 25

5290

If you have any friends or family in Japan at the moment, Telstra has announced they won’t be charging landline or mobile customers who call the earthquake/tsunami stricken country. They’ve even backdated it to 6am last Friday to cover anyone who called when the news first broke, and the offer will be in place until 6am March 25.

To enable Australians to check on family and friends in Japan following last week’s earthquake/tsunami disaster, Telstra will not charge for calls to Japan made using its mobile and landline networks. The fee-free period (which also covers text messages) runs from 6:00am on Friday 11 March through until the same time on Friday March 25, with calls to Japanese numbers billed as zero cost. Handy to know if you’re trying to get in touch or stay in touch.

Good work Telstra, doing something to help in difficult times! I have many friends in Japan but they are all (thankfully) unaffected. I won't use this free service to call them, I'll save it for people in need with family and friends directly affected, so as not to use up overseas phone capacity. I will let my other friends know, some of whom do have loved ones living in or near devastated areas, so they can contact them and confirm they are safe.

Sorry if it's slightly off-topic, but these slider-photos show the extend of damage, drag the blue sliders in the middle of each image left and right to uncover different parts of the photo:

    • -1

I'm holding my + so I can be number 500

      • lol what's the price for being @ 500?
can the mod leak out some info. ;)

      • +1

Aw c'mon footywiz11, this is not the time for personal glory.

Lay it on the table mate: stand up and be counted.

      • +3

There you go. I have been holding off. I didn't want a Telco to beat Cadbury's but the peer pressure has been immense.

      • too late. Oh well, looks like I'll be 502

  • it had been leaked, the one vote @ 500 will be paying $20/week or pay $1 for every vote in this post…so are you still in it? :)

  • Quick footywiz. Hit refresh then +

  • sorry he missed out

  • Hahaha there we go: 500 votes.

    Who's here to party now?

  • +1

whuiiheeee party…. who will actually thought Telstra got the Best deal??? this is epic.. come on other company this is just Telstra .. beat them!!

  • +2

I may be completely wrong here so sorry if I am. But….I cut and paste the votes table into Excel and the 500th voter was inerdi and as of 14:57 there was 512 votes in total. More than likely I am wrong but just curious.

    • not sure why, but doing the same thing crashed excel for me.. maybe too awesome :)
but by manually checking the number of +s and going from the bottom, wasn't Gerry Harvey the 500th vote?

      • sorry but i pressed the 500 th :) as footywiz must of been asleep

        • how come you're above Gerry Harvey in the list then? :S

        • i pressed it it changed to 500 ? his name came after mine on the live action page ? we are playing for a sheep station !

        • no just busy

        • hope i won as i can tell everyone i have won a comp :)
          http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/41134

    • tightbot, you are onto something here…

likewise, just did same cut and paste, there are 517 in the list of voters, but '+' count is only at 504.
where are the missing 13 ?

so I went back to do same on the Cadbury Hack post and there are 505 in the list or voters, less 6 negs, equals 499, but they are displaying 486 positives. again out by 13.

third check: Free mug has 460 votes, but has 463 in the list of voters.

I hope the Ozbargain vote counters aren't also being used in this weekend's NSW state election !!

    • sorry but I have my doubts about 1000 :'(

      • +2

hehe time to make 500 fake accounts!

    • now let get to triple 5! a nice # for a record

      • ed: epic reading skills win
