  • Anyone know when this deal finishes?

Op can you please post photos of yours?

      Stalker

    • +4

And what it looks like on the back too?

  • +1

What res do the photos need to be for them to look half decent on a frame that size? Does anybody know? I have no idea.

    • +6

Just make sure it comes from your phone camera or without passing through WhatsApp or FB; they compress images.
The file should be 2MB or larger, or at least 2000 pixels on one of the dimensions.

    • +16

Good rule of thumb for canvases is 200dpi, so given it's 20x40 inches, that's 4000x8000. You can get away with less (eg 3000x6000) but it will start becoming blurry, up close. Upshot is, with the aspect ratio change, oversharping, lack of tight focus, your typical smartphone snap will tend to show up the imperfections when blown up to this size. Better to have good panorama shot, if it's a smartphone.

Remember that you need to allow for the print wrapping around the frame and onto the back. Make sure you don't have important content going up to the edge.

      • I've got a portrait shot, that's 300dpi with a res of 2000x3000 pixels. Would this turn out OK on the smaller 12x24 size canvas print?

        • +1

Obviously 3000 pixels at 300dpi is 10 inches.

You can print it at this size (portrait rather than landscape, natch) but with 75dpi. So long as your portrait itself is quite 'long'.

I'd put it into an art package and use the best enlarge option possible, maybe one of those newer AI based ones, and then look at the result carefully to check if it was sharp enough at the scale I was interested in. Blow it up on the screen so the effective size is right for the final print scale, and see if it looks good.

        • +1

          Easily.

        • +2

Just an FYI, if you are talking about a digital file the DPI shown on the file is meaningless. You can edit that metadata to say 1 or 1000000 dpi and it makes no difference.

Just divide your resolution by the number of inches and for a canvas keep it above 100 PPI (pixels per inch). 200 ppi would be better but 100 is still going to give you good results at that size.

      • is there an option for mirror or black borders?

        • I think from memory you can set white borders, or something derived from the front. Never used those options though, I always made sure the sides had what I wanted on them.

They do give you some level of preview.

      • In no way will you require a 32mp image to print a 1m wide canvas.

      • Thanks so much for the info sane :) Now I know what to do, takes the guesswork out of it. Much appreciated.

  • I recommend Big W photo canvas prints as well. I have 3 and I have printed for my friends birthdays as I design its easy for me to create custom designs. I have 3 for approx 5 years and still looking great, no fading etc….

I am just waiting for their rectangle canvas to go on sale. I missed it 1 week ago :(

  • +4

Snapfish currently have a 70% off canvas which makes it a bit cheaper. Whilst they have a terrible review history online, my experience was great. Yes the shipping takes a bit longer but it was less than 2 weeks. I made sure I used very high res photos and the quality on the 6 canvases I got was great.

  • Are there any free sites with wildlife photos which would be suitable?

    • +3

Search google images for what u want. Make it an ‘advanced’ search and set the minimum resolution to whatever u think will be high res enough

    • Any animals in particular?

Otherwise a link to something similar that bellpop posted:

      https://www.google.com.au/search?q=wildlife&safe=off&tbs=isz…

That takes you to google image results of 'wildlife' of resolution higher than 15mp (4480x3360) res. Should be decent enough to print something from that res onto canvas at that size advertised above.

unsplash.com - free high res images

      • +1

Unsplash has the best free stock in my opinion. Been a graphic designer for 5+ years and unsplash has the most beautiful stock images.

        • +2

Agree, I use Unsplash for all my website work as they have great quality photos and of course they are free.
For printing on canvas most of their photos are of a high resolution so you should find something you like.
As an example go to Unsplash.com and enter ‘Giraffe’ in the search box. Most photos are at least 3000 on one side

  • Thanks OP, any ideas where i can just get the frames of those sizes. Does BIGW sell frames only?

    • +1

Try a local men’s shed or woodturners shed. They may do a custom sized frame for you for cheap.

  • Im always curious on the actual printers/inksets and media these places actually use.

    • Unsure but Fuji are pretty big in the print industry. Most in store print labs are fuji machines.

      • +4

        They also make tasty apples.

      • That's usually digital offset, wet labs and dye sub printing.
Fuji isn't as known for large format printers though their website has a section with limited info - Can't just and order online along with inks and various media from their site or other large format print suppliers which seems to go towards like Epson, Canon, HP or Roland.

    • They come from Fujifilm.

    • whats the minimum resolution to look good for the $19 one? and what do you guys use to hang it on the wall?

      • +1

It really depends how good the photo is… an easy check is to get the photo up on your tv, and scale it until its 12x12… assuming your tv is hd or better. That'll give you an idea if it will be too blurry, etc

SANE a few posts up recommends 200 dpi per 9nch, so thay would be 2400 by 2400.

      • +3

a 1 pixel image could look good in a nice pastel colour

  • -1

Anyone reckon a 3440x1440 ultrawide monitor wallpaper will come out alright on this?

  • There was a problem finalising your order. Please try again.

Anyone else having trouble with payment on this terrible site?

  • I have a 200 dpi image with 3600 x 2400 res. Does anyone know if it will come out ok with the 20 x 40" image? Thanks in advance :)

    • +2

You have an image with resolution 3600 x 2400. The dpi shown on the file is essentially meaningless, you can change it to say any number and you still have the same number of pixels.

At 36in x 24in you would have 100 PPI (pixels per inch) That will look pretty good, 200 ppi would be preferable though but not really required for that size print.

The OP linked to a 20x40 which is going to put you at around 90 ppi. Really getting to the lower limits of what is going to look acceptable depending on viewing distance.

      • Thank you

  • +2

It is a saving of about $20. Kmart offer a similar size for $79. A Google search will show comparable prices to Big W's reduced price. Just sayin', in case someone feels that they're getting the bargain because of the Jacked retail price of $230.

    • Do Big W use a better printing process than Kmart? Longer lasting Fuji inks maybe?

    • Kmart uses Kodak machines and from my experience they're terrible.

  • how good quality are these compared to dedicated photo shop advertising their special fuji kodak paper and timber frames etc?

    • fuji kodak paper?

      These are done by Fuji.

  • Picked one of these up a few weeks ago for a wedding print - not the best print I've ever seen, but certainly not the worst either.
I'm pretty impressed with the quality given the price.

I have mine hung in a hallway - so it's viewed from a very close distance (<60cm away)
Even at that close viewing position, the quality is very good.

  • Nice deal, thanks for posting. Easy personalised Christmas gifts coming up.

  • how do you order it though? it asks you to go through the app but in the app the price is $230

    • Still says $59 for me on the app.

      Canvas & Wall Decor -> Standard Canvas Prints -> Panoramic -> Landscape / Portrait -> 20x40" Canvas

  • I don’t see the deal prices anymore, has it already expired?

    • I just clicked the "go to deal" link and it came up as $59.

      • but to upload a photo you need the app and the app still says $230?

  • I would recommend using the website rather than the app if you want more customisation, such as: backgrounds, embellishments, borders, and adding text.

  • Anyone happen to know how accurate that red border is for the canvas wrap around is? If I put an image only in the white section and just empty space in the red, how likely is it to come out as per the website?

    • i'll say its pretty accurate. if there is no image on the red border, it will be just white when it come out.

      • I went ahead with it and it turned out pretty accurate. There is a slight amount of overlap over the sides and the canvas was not wrapped entirely straight, but it’s a pretty minor defect. I’d be upset if I spent $200 plus but for $59 it’s good.

  • FYI there are cheaper options around. I was about to buy a 50x150cm Big W canvas when I thought I should price check.

    Big W $175 + $12.95 postage
https://www.customcanvasonline.com.au $135.62 inc. postage. Their reviews seem quite good - https://www.productreview.com.au/p/custom-canvas-online.html

https://www.photobookshop.com.au/voucher also has some super cheap canvas print options too.

  • I must be doing something wrong - It's asking me to install flash. My understanding was that Flash was found to be a major security risk!
How is everyone able to use this service? Neither Chrome nor Firefox will install Flash.

    • Chrome should install flash just fine. it just asks to confirm before any site actually runs anything flash.

  • Anyone know how long after ordering can you pickup the canvas?

    • Mine rocked up today in SA, but the store hadn’t emailed me yet. Just took a gamble and they were there!

  • I thought we had until the 31st to put in our order. Seems like the deal has already finished :( I was looking to get a 30" square canvas print, but price has returned to normal now.

    • Only the panoramic ones were in the deal, and they’re still on sale.

  • Anyone else picked up their canvas yet? I’m tempted to just walk in store this afternoon and ask. Order status is still “job has been shipped”.

    From WA

  • did a print of a pic i took with my DSLR. about 110 dpi. it's pretty clear even close up. dynamic range isn't the best but it's decent

  • Got 2 done for my sons room using files i brought off Etsy. Animals of the world. Impressed with the quality. They turned out really good. Very happy.
