    Great find!

    • +2

Keep in mind this is Apple, and therefore only part of the equation… you still need to buy the usb-c to lightning cable, +$29, for 1metre, or the generously discounted 2 metre for a mere $55 extra

  • -7

29W is kind of pathetic. How long does it take to charge a battery on one of those apple laptops?

    • +7

This is meant for the original MacBook (ie, not the 'Pro'), or the iPad / iPhone for fast charging (when combined with a USB-C to Lightning cable)

Don’t bother looking in Perth, all stores reporting out of stock via the website.

@smuggler: But by comparing the internals of Apple original A1554 29W and a 3rd party PD charger, say Blitzwolf S10. The Apple one is definitely better made with quality components and extra insulation etc., so maybe pricy at $69 but IMO definitely good value at $35 a piece

out of stock in few minutes

    • -6

Not really - the price was reduced overnight - I ordered mine about 1am.

      • -5

Why the negs? It's a simple fact. Someone else posted about the price drop in the wee hours of this morning.

EDIT: Here you go - it's in the $50 version of the deal.

      • +1

I think the negs are because you got your bargain and didn’t let us know at 1am.

        • Someone else posted it on here - not my fault you were asleep instead of bargain hunting.

          • @dm01: Well, it seems somebody said “gone in minutes” an hour after someone else posted this deal, and you were like “nah, there were heaps 18 hrs before you realised and I got one without telling you”.

Not my table, really, I didn’t neg you either, but… yeah.

            • @pizzaguy: No I just pointed out that it hadn't sold out in minutes because someone else had already posted on OzB with the price drop 15 hours before this post. Why can't people read properly?

  • +1

    Was $69.

They charge that much for a phone or tablet and then expect you to pay $69 just for the brick to charge quicker?

    • +8

How else do you become a trillion dollar company? Generosity and competitive pricing?

      • -8

I'm so at a loss as to how Apple managed and still manages to blatantly rip people off and people still purchase new products en masse.

what other company besides Apple could pull this off?

By this comment do you mean charge a premium and still manage to sell?
If so then it’s pretty common.
Bose, Miele and Dyson come to mind.
I own an iPad but not an iPhone as I can’t justify the cost but clearly a lot of people can justify the cost and added to that, most company phones these days are iPhones.
I wish iPhones were half their price as I’d consider one then but if I owned Apple and was asked to cut the sell prices in half there is no way I’d do it.

              • @dan76n:

Bose, Miele and Dyson come to mind.

Bose and Dyson are not in the same league as Miele. You won't find many Bose and Dyson products still being used after ten years whereas most Miele products keep on going with a design life of 20+ years.

There are a few "premium" euro whitegood manufacturers who would go better with Bose and Dyson.

            • @pennypincher98: Microsoft’s about to become the second trillion dollar business. Own a pc?

    • Perhaps consider exercising your penny-pinching right to not purchase this item?

      • -3

I won't have a use for it, because I stopped buying Apple products years ago. Steve Jobs (RIP) was great for the company, Tim Cook now just likes to add gimmicks.

        • +2

So you just checked out this bargain to complain about Apple products? Cool.

          • -3

Jobs: Touch ID, Home Button etc.

            • +4

@pennypincher98: Compare whatever you like - I really don't care. I'm happy with the Apple products I own and use.

              • -5

@dm01: That's great for you. Except for the fact you cared enough to leave a comment?

I'm happy to be proven wrong but in my opinion the biggest company in the world is going stale.

                • @pennypincher98: I don't care about your comparison between Cook and Jobs.

I do find it amusing you've labeled me an Apple fanboy and iSheep (very clever and original - well done), yet you're the one pining for the former CEO.

                • +1

@pennypincher98: Why do people buy Apple products?

Simple, because for people you care about, they are worth it. And, you are worth it. Also, you can try any Apple product for 14 days and return it if you are not happy about it (full money back). The warranty support is nice and fast (on the spot swap for iPhones normally). I lent my boss an Android phone coz his Samsung phone had to be sent in for repair.

As for Android being a better choice. Two of my Google tablets are so slow now (after the so called latest updates from Google), I don't get why Google did that. They were very smooth and fast before the latest OS update. I guess Google felt the need to copy Apple on slowing down old / previous gen devices.

Apple certainly are quite arrogant and care more about cost cutting nowadays, rather than doing what's right. But, most Android makers are no better either. Samsung resisted the notch, removal of headphone jack, but other Android makers are following Apple. Google's new phone's notch is even worse (come one Google, stop copying the bad bits from Apple please).

                    @netsurfer:

Apple certainly are quite arrogant and care more about cost cutting nowadays,

It all depends on your point of view. Apple are a publicly listed company - what you call 'arrogance' is simply them maximising returns to their shareholders. Apple exist to make money, and they have figured out how to do it very well.

                    • -1

@dm01: Please don't cut off my sentence. The bit about rather than doing what's right is more important. Macbook Pros used to have all the great designs (decent selection of ports, MagSafe, possibility to upgrade). Now, they are donglebooks with so many dongles you have to get from 3rd parties and plenty of lousy ones.

It's different when Steve Jobs was the CEO. In short, I do agree with pennypincher98 to some extent. I see no need to sugarcoat what Apple have been doing lately.

                        @netsurfer:

Please don't cut off my se

I'll cut and quote whichever bits I want, thanks, but the rest of your sentence wasn't important anyway. If you're concerned with Apple doing "what's right", Apple's priority is to do "what's right" by their shareholders. Cutting costs and simplifying design, manufacturing, components used, all serves to generate higher returns.

Apple is most certainly "doing right" if the money is pouring in, regardless of whether you, I, or any other individual find the changes undesirable.

I personally dislike many of the design changes made in recent years, but Apple don't make products just for me or any other individual, yet there's an online contingent who don't seem to realise that given the way they whine and carry on when something is not to their liking.

  • Can you use this to charge iPhone 7 plus?

    • Yes.

    • I don't believe it supports quick charging like the 8 and X models do. Neg if wrong

Edit. It'll work fine and charge slightly faster

      https://www.apple.com/shop/question/answers/readonly/iphone-…

    • +3

Yes, but you will need the official USB-C to lightning cable to benefit from the so called fast charge.

Honestly, you should only get this if one of the followings apply to you:

      • You must have the ability to charge your phone from 0% to 50% in less than 30 minutes. Another 10 minutes (i.e. using the 12W or 10W charger) is a huge issue for you.
      • You have an iPad Pro 10/12 inch model - than this charger really reduce the overall time.
      • You have Donglebook (um… sorry, Macbook / Pro) in which you will need a USB-C to lightning cable anyway and this charger could be an emergency backup (for laptop, it's charging speed is on the low side).

Not worth it for iPhone 7 plus alone I reckon (unless you have other Apple devices).

      • Maybe not for the iPhone 7 but this charger makes a significant difference with the new iPhones. The iPhone XS Max usually takes over 3 hours to fully charge with the standard charger but under 2 hours with one of these.

        • -1

Provide the actual time please. I don't have iPhone XS Max so I cannot test. However, you need to bear in mind that due to limited number of cells on iPhones, the charger cannot charge the phone at 29W from start to finish, after 50% charge, it will start to slow down - otherwise the battery will explode.

What you indicated so far, the benefit is still minimal compared to iPad Pro. Under 2 hours to too vague (it is just below 3 hours or just a bit over 2 hours?). The 12W charger is decent, compact and doesn't need an USB-C to lightning cable - not to mention Apple cut cost and now made the 1m USB 2.0 only (old version was USB 3).

      • I have 2017 mbp and iPhone max should I get this ?

        • I did

        • If you get this with the intention to use it to charge MBP, you'll end up with a slow charger for MBP. You are better off getting a 61W or 78W charger (when a seller sells it at a discount) - depending on which MBP you have. Those will still fast charge iPhone XS Max.

For iPhones, the 12W charger is the most sensible (standard cable works, and charges reasonably fast).

        • Just to make things even more messy.

If you have an MBP, then you need to think about which cable you intend to get. 1m USB-C to lightning cable, you will be lucky to still find the old MK0X2AM (USB 3.0). The new version (MQGJ2AM) is only USB 2.0. It matters for iPad Pro (I cannot tell whether XS Max can do USB 3.0). 2m version is USB 3 but pricey.

Then, there is the 15V. The new revision of the 61W charger (A1718) adds 15V support. MBP 13 inch 2018 comes with that revision, 2017 came with the older revision. Perhaps the new revision would be of interest. The 29W, technically is not USB-C/PD standard compliant.

The biggest issue for me is the cable. I only have one and I need it for the Macbook Pro - iPhone/iPad Pro combination. The family member with iPhone XS Max currently uses the 12W charger (too much hassle swapping / sharing cable and I don't want to buy an USB 2 cable).

    • +1

You can use an iPad charger also which will get you 10-12watts instead of the 5w stock charger. Not as fast as 18w "Fast Charge" but still fast enough providing your not in a crazy rush. Still puts it at over 2x faster

  • +2

    No stock in ACT.

  • Cheap ebay USB-C to lightning cables work with this?

    • Nope currently only Apple original USB-C->Lightning cable can charge at >2A
Apple started to license 3rd parties to make these cables under MFI program, so they will come out later this year (I heard from manufacturers that the licensing fee is super expensive so only the more capable brands will be able to afford it, e.g. Anker, Zmi etc.)

      • so only the more capable brands will be able to afford it, e.g. Anker, Zmi etc.)

There's a place here for Monster Cables and they can sell them through Harvey Norman.

      • Apple already cut corner on the current 1m version of the cable (now USB 2.0 only - this is really annoying because if you were to use the cable for Macbook Pro or iPad Pro or a PC with USB-C port - this can be an issue).
      • You cannot tell whether the 3rd party cable supports fast charge unless you have a power meter that supports USB-C. That meter costs more than the cable. If a cable doesn't support USB-PD, it will engage 5V high voltage still (so the time difference is probably around 14 minutes only).

If you have iPhone X/8/7, you only get 14 minutes faster charging (because for phone battery have limited cells). The fast charge operates mostly when the battery is below 50% - so if you run the iPhone battery down to close to 0 and that 14 minutes is a huge deal to you, then go for it. Bear in mind that the 1m cable you get now is most certainly USB 2.0 only. There used to be one more advantage of the cable - USB 3.0 support. The 2m cable might still be USB 3.0 (costs more and no price reduction yet).

  • I literally just ordered a ipad 2018 10 minutes ago, would this make it charge faster than it's included 12w charger?

    • +1

You do know the new iPad models are being announced on October 30th right?

      • Um no, lol it's fine though looking at the upgrades from 2017 to 2018 nothing ground breaking was updated so it should be fine.
If they release an updated ipad mini then i'll be kicking myself but i doubt it. (absolutely love the ipad mini size)

        • +1

iPad Mini is way overdue a refresh, it hasn't been updated since March 2017 (578 days) so the 2018 units are exactly the same. I would wait another week and bit to see what's announced.

    • +1

Nope only the iPad pro will benefit from this one

      • 😅

    • 😬

    • Like Mostly Melbourne pointed out, iPad 2018 doesn't support USB-PD.

Only iPad Pro 10 and 12 inch models support USB-PD. And, if you have one of those, and still haven't got the cable yet, the 1m one is USB 2.0 only. iPad Pro 10/12 support USB 3.0, but the cable must also support it for it to work.

      • Source for the 1M only being USB 2.0?

No mention of that on the Apple website: https://www.apple.com/au/shop/product/MQGJ2FE/A/usb-c-to-lig…

        • +1

As netsurfer pointed out, the newer 1m USB-C to Lightning cables(MQGJ2FE) are USB2.0 with thinner cable (2.93mm outer diameter vs 3.42mm) and less pins to cut cost which also reduced data transfer speed, comparing to older version MK0X2AM/A link to Officeworks.

            • +1

@birdie: Yup, saw your comment below, nice pick up on the charger and the "better" version cable

            • @birdie: I wouldn't count on what's written on that Web page. They probably didn't update the page. What I found was JB used to have some old ones (they had the older price tag) mixed with a lot of new ones - same reduced price. That was 2 months ago. My nearest Apple store had ZERO old one. When I checked JB Hi Fi 2 weeks ago, all new ones now.

OfficeWorks have good return policy. Check the actual one received.

          • @Mostly Melbourne: Thanks Mostly Melbourne. I am still trying to find that review article.

Also, can anyone who is good at Chinese translate / summarise the following article?
            http://www.chongdiantou.com/wp/archives/27093.html

It looks like there is a new version of 61W USB-C charger (A1718) which adds 15V support and it charges iPad Pro faster (30 minutes?). Thus, the 30W charger (also supports 15V) could be a better buy than the 29W if you have an iPad Pro. Maybe it won't be that much difference since 29W supports 14.5V - and iPad Pro does take advantage of 14.5; 0.5V difference isn't going to be much).

Same product name, different revision, different result. USB-C/PD/USB2vs3 continues to be quite messy.

Best combo: OLD version of 1m USB-C to lightning cable (USB 3.0), 30W charger - if data speed and charging speed mean a lot to you.

            • @netsurfer: Without knowing Chinese you've done a pretty good summary of the findings. The new A1947 61W does charge iPad pro faster than A1718 because A1718 can only output at the 9V2A mode to iPad pro whilst the device actually supports 15V2A.

Problem with the 29W is it's technically not "USB-PD" due to 1. the lack of 9V output voltage level, and 2. 14.5V is not 15V per USB-PD 2.0 standard, so it's logical to roll out a newer 30W USB-PD compliant version fast charger for the new iPad Pro and new Macbook.

              • @Mostly Melbourne: Bugger, Office Works send me the incorrect cable. Ordered a MK0X2AM/A and received a MQGJ2FE/A.

                • @tinnybastard: They only stock MQGJ2FE/A. They haven't updated their website.
                  Bought 2x 2m USB 3.0 (INMKQ42AMA) from Officeworks, $49 each.

                  • @Navgsc: How did you get them for $49? Currently listed for $54. I assume you'll receive the new thinner USB 2.0 version as I did?

                    • @tinnybastard: Bought in-store and the price was $49, a couple of days ago. They are the thick USB 3.0 version (INMKQ42AMA).

I used the thumbnail pic to calibrate my monitor. Thanks, OP.

  • What should I use for my iPhone max? The stock one is slow af

    • This one. Or the 12W charger.

    • Buy the fast charger. This product should be okay. Just get a decent cable that's well insulated.

      https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT208137

    • 12W charger. You can use Android chargers as well. Go for 5V 2.4A ones.
Put it this way, these 29W chargers did not sell like hotcakes because the benefit they provide is very minimal for phones (good for iPad Pro's). 14.5V is also an odd USB-PD voltage (probably why Apple introduced a 30W charger now).

  • These really should have been included with the ipad pro 12” it makes such a difference especially with battery draining apps

Excellent price at $35 just grabbed 2, I have a few lighting to usbc cables I bought of ebay for about $8 each and they work fine with this

    • Can you please post the ebay link for cables?

      • +1

You cannot tell whether the 3rd party cables work or not without a USB-C meter (unless you have an iPad Pro 12 and the charge time is no faster than 12W). The 5V portion of the 29W charger is identical to the 12W one, so if the cable won't engage 14.5V (USB-PD), then you end up using a bulkier charger for no benefit.

        • All I know is it charges a hell of a lot faster than on the 12w charger really haven’t been able to fault the cable, the 12w seems unbearably slow now
