Great price. Thanks for sharing :)

For the people that already own this device or looking to buy this device with an international firmware. You can actually flash the firmware and change the region to China.

    http://en.miui.com/thread-2674861-5-1.html

    • +8

Excuse my ignorance, but why would you want to do this?

      • +3

Chinese firmware cleans better than english.

        • +2

Do you have any information to back this up? I have the gen 2 and app/mapping works fine.

        • i read the line without the word "Firmware'. My bad

        • +1

          Additional Functions:
          1. No go zone
          2. Save map
          3. Barrier Tape

Also being with China region works with other xiaomi products that are not supported by international region.

          • @sunnyii: Can you save/store no go zones for all future auto scheduled runs?

            • @MisterNobody: I believe so..I havent tested this in details yet. For under $500 vacuum and mop is a bargain

          • @sunnyii: Virtual barrier tape? I just placed an order for the Roborock - can't wait to test it out.

      • +3

So the Chinese communist party knows how dirty your house is

    • +1

if u have the internationl firmware, u can now officially add it to google home, as MI home now supports google home. not sure abt when region set to China

$433 with 15% off code recently and now with 20% off code are $468, still classify as Great price?

$529 with last known price now $568

    • $433 with 15% off code recently

Yes, I wouldn't count pre-orders or one-off sales as you will never that price again anytime soon, until the price naturally drops in the future.

It's nothing new, e.g. the GoPro 5 was an amazing $279 in June 2018, and a less-amazing $347 in August 2018 but it was still a good deal compared to the regular selling price.

      • +2

Only 1 week projected shippment day is not much pre-order and they also sell lots of it, i dont say it as one off.

My point would be it used to be $529 and now $568, price jacking is not so appreciated.

        • -1

Plus technology gets cheaper with time, not the other way around!

This is standard eBay price hike and then a discount to make it look like a great deal. Number of other sellers selling it for $530 (including delivery but not participating in this sale) compared to price of $585 then a discount of 20%.

Why cant you offer it like other sellers for $530 and then give 15-20% discount? That will bring it closer to $433.

Waiting for a decent deal to get one.

          • @MaxPower1982:

Why cant you offer it like other sellers for $530 and then give 15-20% discount?

I'm guessing for the same reason those $530 sellers didn't take part in the sale. It probably wouldn't be profitable for them to do so. :)

          • +1

            @MaxPower1982: "technology gets cheaper with time…" Cough Cough…iPhone…Cough Cough…Apple products…..

        • +1

'projected shipment' doesn't make it any less pre-order though.

        • -1

Only 1 week projected shippment day is not much pre-order

          It's still a pre-order isn't it?

and they also sell lots of it, i dont say it as one off.

One-off means the sale only happened once and not that only one item was sold. So far that price has only been available once. Just like the GoPro example I gave - it was on sale for an amazing $279 only once. Two months later it was on sale for $347 which was still a great price, which was reflected in the upvotes.

Just because an item was available for a much cheaper price during only one sale at one point in time doesn't mean any other discounts in the future are not bargains. You can't always live in the past. As with all technology the price will always drop as time passes, but right now it's the best price around. In a few months it'll probably be cheaper, but that doesn't help anyone who wants to get one now.

My point would be it used to be $529 and now $568,

Your first sentence was talking about the $433 price, wasn't that your point?

price jacking is not so appreciated.

Is there evidence of price jacking? What is their regular selling price?

  • +1

I have one of these. They are highly recommended.

  • +1

Do these really work? Reliable? Or do I still have to do work after?

    • +1

They're pretty solid, I don't use my manual vacuum anymore at all.

    • +1

My experience: the main brush can get clogged with hair when vacuuming. This happens only on carpeted floor. On non-carpet never experience getting clogged.

Otherwise, saves a lot of energy and picks up lots of dirt/dust. Great purchase.

    • +1

These are great , we have a large house , 2 stories , mostly timber floor
      It is great

      • Do you do anything to stop it falling down the stairs or just rely on the stair detection?

        • Has cliff detection

      • Andrew, just curious - do you physically lift and place the bot upstairs to clean and leave the charging dock downstairs? I read somewhere it doesn't save the map for downstairs and upstairs and starts mapping from scratch if you lift the bot and move it. Thinking of getting one but not sure how it behaves with physically moving the thing (need zoned cleaning as have mixed floors of tiles, carpet and rugs). Also wondering with kids running around it when its cleaning - does it get confused with kids as furniture that is moving?.

        • +1

I have one, and live in a two storey home. It does re-map each time you clean but I don't think it's a big deal, it's still plenty fast and seems to follow a semi logical path. I dump it upstairs, hit clean, and when it finishes, it'll ask me to manually take it back to the dock as it can't get there itself.

In terms of kids, our dog sometimes gets in the way and it just carefully goes around. But I think with kids (depending on how old they are), the risk could be them tripping over it and hurting themselves, or stepping on it and breaking it.

The mixed zone thing is fine. Our bottom floor has tiles, carpet, and rugs - it seems to automatically detect carpet/rugs and audibly ups the suction in those sections.

I haven't manually vacuumed (besides the stairs, which the robot can't do) since I bought it.

          • @spiev: Thanks spiev. You alleviated some of my concerns. I placed an order for one. Can't wait to get a few hours back. Hope they added a virtual barrier in the app and not referring to the magnetic tape.

  • Does the mopping work well?

    • I'm also eager to know this. I already have the non mopping robot and has made me very lazy :)

    • I would say work well on my floor board and tile flooring.

It is not soaking wet, it is even less wet than me using a mop. Problem is it leave a small trail of the wheel mark.

  • +1

Is this worth $124 more then the first gen? The mopping I'm dubious about, but setting digital exclusion zones seems handy since I got a shaggy run in my lounge.

    • Good to know how this performs compared to 1st gen

      • Read the review above. Shows you exactly that.

        • +2

Chasing first hand experience, I'm dubious about anyone with an affiliate link after reading about mattress affiliates/review sites.

          • @Nalar: Don't worry about their opinion, just have a look at the spec differences at the bottom. I've also been checking Amazon reviews. Looks very good.

    • +1

I have a first generation one, and with the recent software update I can now start a zoned cleanup (that is practically an exclusion zone). That would be version 3.3.9_003358 for the bot, and version 5.4.14 for the app

      • Yes, but in Gen1 you can't save a zone. You must manually go in and draw your zone based on the previous clean then hit go. If you wish to clean the same zone again at a later date you must repeat the process. I'm not sure this is what people are hoping for.

Example is if you want to always avoid the rug or a certain room or the top of stairs. This can't be programmed in and kept for repeated usage on Gen1. I would really like to know if Gen2 allows all this as it claims.

    • Gen 1 is $343.20 after PODCAST, very tempting price!

I wonder if magnetic strips can be taped underneath rugs to establish exclusion zones?

  • Not sure why i cant apply the code - This code can't be applied to your order.

    • Me neither. The code field is greyed out for me and I can't even enter a code. Anyone know the cause?

      • Edit: Sorted - my payment option on eBay was defaulting to Paypal Pay After Delivery. Apparently can't use discount codes with this payment option.

    • I have the same issue, and it's not the Paypal issue digitalwater20 had…

  • Holy sh!t that review makes me want to buy one now!

    • I assume sarcasm!

      • Hahaha - I was being serious!!! :)

  • +1

I bought one of these recently too and it works a charm. It's amazing how well it maps my whole house and i can sit upstairs watching it do its thing.

I haven't tried the mopping feature to be honest but I never intended to use it - i heard people saying it's just like dragging a wet cloth around and really don't want it dragging a wet cloth over my rugs downstairs.

Everything can be controlled from the phone too which works like a charm. Highly recommended!

    • Instruction say not to use with carpet.

      • Yes I have tiles downstairs.. with a couple of rugs.

        • +1

I have a small rug and it still work on it just i feel it is a bit more wet after the robort run on it.

    • How do you avoid using the mop and just run it as a vacuum?

      • You just don't install the water tank/mop attachment. It just slides in under the bot if you need it.

  • There's no way to tell it to avoid certain areas yet is there? i.e. so it doesn't get stuck under the bed, or to avoid a really thick rug? I read there's some kind of magnetic strips, but if it's mapping the room anyway surely they can do this via software?

    • +1

Yes you can buy magnetic strips to make it keep
Out of an area , I haven’t needed to do this yet though
I just move an item to block off under a desk

      https://m.aliexpress.com/item/32911431355.html?pid=808_0000_…

      Anything like this will work

    • You can select multiple cleaning zones of your house and draw squares over a map once it's done a full clean. So yes, you can select which areas for it to clean.

The only annoying thing is that you can't setup cleaning zones and then save them for other cleans.

  • anyone know how this goes with pet fur?

    • +1

Following, I have a very hairy golden retriever

      • Same here!

    • I have a long hair cat and the bot works like a charm. I just need to run it twice in carpeted areas because of the bin filling up, but the brush has no problem.

    • I have Gen1 and 2 Labradors. Floorboards only and it's brilliant. Can't say how it would go with longer hair and carpet sorry.

      • +6

Do the Gen 2 Labradors shed less?

    • I've got a dog with long hair which sheds everyday!!, picks them up very well on hardwood timber. Highly recommend

  • +1

Thanks OP, got one for my cat

    • there are some videos no youtube where cats on sitting on them while cleaning.

  • Bought one from another sale a few months back.

Outta nowhere it threw an "Error 1". Apparently that means the laser is stuck. If it's not then ur fked.

There are discussions about it online and YouTube videos showing a user changing the laser unit for this error.

I contacted the seller and they're offering a refund and claim this model is now discontinued??

Wondering if I should buy again…

  • Just wondering if this can activate my motion detection alarm when I am not home ??

    • +1

Obviously it depends how sensitive your alarm is, but I had a colleague at work have just that issue happen when his alarm went off.. only to rush home to his vacuum cleaner!

  • Does this work well for 2 bedroom apartment? Not very spacious and has lots of things on the floor. Wondering how effective this unit will be.
    Any ideas/experience?

    • If there's lots of things on the floor, its not too good. It clears up 85% of things that aren't blocked by things on the floor. It will go around it, but sometimes if there's cables or loose things it might get stuck.

      • Can it go thru n clean dirts under dining table ie go through the chair legs?

        • depending the gap is large enough for it to go through

        • Yes if there's a gap that's slightly bigger it will go through and around the chair legs.

  • +1

Highly recommended, I got one from the 15% eBay Plus deal a few weeks back via Gearbite.

Got it setup to do zoned cleaning via Home Assistant, and really only use the Xiaomi cloud to tell it to start cleaning and where.

Flolevac is a good app as an alternative to Mi Home

  • Do they work without an internet connection? (Gen 1 & Gen 2)

  • I bought one! WOOHOO! :)

  • +2

Thanks OP + OzBargain. Now I need to explain $468 damage on the credit card to my wife…
