Advice Needed - iPhone XS 20GB Pm + Data Sim 3GB Pm @ $110, Optus

I'm looking to upgrade my phone to the iPhone XS 64gb, on a $100 plan (20GB data)
I have an iPad and it'll need a data sim, $20 plan (3GB)
Optus will give a $10 per month discount if I bundle them, so that's $110 per month.
Total payable for 24months = $2640
Iphone XS RRP $1,629, so I'll be paying $1,011 or $42 per month for 23GB

Need some advice if that's a reasonable bundle?

Cheapest plans now $35 (35GB) phone & data $20 (3GB) = $55 per month
If I were to get the phone outright $1,629 - 5% (gifts cards or what not) - GST (TRS claim) = $1,406
$1,406 / 24 = $58
That'll be $113 per month but with 38GB data

Even if the iPhone price goes down by another $100, it'll be $110 per month.

I'm currently on 11GB total data and that's about right for my use.

My dilemma would be,
1. iPhone XS price may drop following XR release
2. Just wait for the XR and get that at a cheaper price
3. Wait next year

Any comments would be appreciated please! Thank you!

Go on plan that you can afford…..

    • i keep saying that but i think some people prefer to be on 24m contract as long they can carry apple around. they will say look the deal is not bad. they forgot they have to be on that deal for 24 months.

    1. iPhone XS price may drop following XR release

Do you have any reason to believe this? It seems very unlikely, they are different product lines, aimed at different markets, and will have different price points.

    1. Just wait for the XR and get that at a cheaper price

Do you want the better features of the XS or don't care about them? If you don't care, is the price difference worth waiting the extra time until the XR is available?

    1. Wait next year

It's unlikely there'll be significantly better deals, since the price of the phone is unlikely to change until the 2019 iPhone models are released, and you have already stated that you are getting more than adequate data on your plan. Phone contract pricing tends to stay around the same, they just add extra data and free bonuses. So you're going to keep paying about the same amount for the plan, therefore neither the phone or the plan is going to become any cheaper for you. So unless you are considering waiting an entire year until the next models of iPhone come out, this doesn't seem like a real option.

Personally I always prefer to buy a phone outright and then take advantage of improved data caps on BYO plans as they come out, but I keep my phones for 3-4 years before upgrading, and generally I find financial planning easier if I can make large purchases upfront with money I have actually saved rather than paying things off over time. YMMV.

I'd wait for a better deal. I think recently Harvey Norman had a 20% off plan monthly fees for Optus 24 month contracts.

Towards the end of the year I think there should be some sweeteners once the XR is launched, and also because of christmas sales etc.

Also if you have a student ID you can get a further 10% off via unidays.

Also questioning your sim only plans if you were to buy the phone outright:

    Cheapest plans now $35 (35GB) phone & data $20 (3GB) = $55 per month

Have you looked around with other third party providers? e.g. catchconnect, which uses the optus network, and kogan mobile (vodafone). You might be able to save more which makes the comparison more favourable.

  • If you can afford $110 a month for a phone for 24 months then I'd bet that you probably aren't wanting to wait.

    $2,640.
That's a lot for a phone that's going to be at least 2 years old by the time you have finished paying your $110 a month..

  • Eh, I stubbornly refuse to buy phones on a plan like that. Makes me feel like I'm paying more for a phone on the long term.

Although I suppose it technically evens out with the price right now ($50 gives 30gb on boost mobile, so about right for data), odds are the phone's value will drop when the next release happens.

IMO, if the phone you have right now is half decent, hold off till you have the money.

Also, did you have wifi at your house? Because if so you'll definitely be better off doing the above and saving money on data.
