What's Your Favourite Frozen Meat Pie?

Anyone tried Herbert Adams?

Bought some recently and they were the best pies I've ever tasted, fresh or frozen.

Big rectangular chunks of tender meat, perfect gravy and pastry.

You can get them on special for $4-$5.

Even at full price they're still worth it, and some of the flavours are so tasty.

        I like the Mag Pies…

    Mrs Mac's

    • +1

You don't like Mr Mac's meat, too much gristle?

      • +1

They are too famous for me.

    • +1

They've recently changed their packaging, and I think also their taste.. Lost me as a fan

    • If it ain't Mrs Mac's, take it back

    • Only if it's been sitting in a servo hotbox for at least a week.

  • +1

I only like the pastry :(

    Yes, I am weird.

    • +7

I like to eat the meat out first, then the pastry it self.

      No dirty thoughts

      • +2

Same here, need a spoon to eat my pie

  • +1

Used to get the meat pies at the Hargrave caf. at Monash - very tasty. I then noticed the contents looked, distinctly, like the meat medium we used for Microbiology. I still ate the pies, but it did make me a bit queasier after that.

    • Horse blood was used as a medium historically. It isn't that different to whats in your pie

      • +1

        Particularly in the UK.

  • the herbert adams aren't bad for a frozen pie. i don't tend to eat many pies at home tho.

  • +2

Love the brand. Always get it on special. The rosemary flavour is good.

    • Yeah, like that one too, and the one with wine is nice.

      • I haven't tried that yet.

        • Yeah they are great but I think they are a pricey considering you only get 2, but worth it when on special.

          • @kelvinv: Sorry, I meant I haven't tried the wine flavour. Definetly worth when it's on special lol.

  • +4

I quite like the Mrs Quick sausage rolls.

    • +12

      Reported for off topic

    • +2

They are amazing ! quite often half price as well

      • $5 a kilo on spec this week at Woolies. Got 3 packs. Even cheaper when they're half price (3.75)

  • +1

Those Herbert Adams pies are pretty nice, but pricey! All of my old affordable frozen favourites taste like crap these days, unfortunately.

  • +2

Patties party pies. Or aldi brand. But I don’t eat full sized pies. The ratio of meat to pastry is far superior in party size!

    • +1

      Best snack ever.

    • +1

I don’t eat full sized pies. The ratio of meat to pastry is far superior in party size!

disagree, for crunchiness and pastry eating satisfaction, full size is the right size

  • +1

Always gone for the good deals on the Four N Twenties. I'll have to try some Herbert Adams!

  • I can buy rib fillet for $8 a KG why would I spend $16.80 for a mystery bag of camel horse mutton factory packers goobers in a bit of pastry thats been in frozen storage for 6 months.
Call me a party pooper but you can't turn a sow's testical bag into a silk purse no matter how much BBQ sauce you kill it in.

  • My local (Chinese) bakery 👍

    • I said meat pies.

      • +1

        They sell meat pies….

        • +1

Why eat horrible salty flakey gooey messy meat pie when you can have delicious soft sweet yummy pork bun?

          • +7

@Scrooge McDuck: Because this thread is about frozen meat pies.

            • -6

@[Deactivated]: Do you base your dietary choices on the existence of a thread?

Or were you just trying to fit in?

You're welcome to surprise me, but I don't expect a coherent response. I'm simply highlighting the error in your logic.

          • @Scrooge McDuck: I've had some pretty ordinary pork buns as well. It always comes down to the quality of the ingredients and preparation. A good meat pie is a wonder to behold, the same with a good pork bun. I grew up WASP in the '60s, so I know what awful food is like - sometimes a good meat pie is a cry in the wilderness.

  • +3

Herbert Adams pies are the best frozen pies hands down. They're also better than 90% of meat pies you would find at a bakery.

    • +1

Ridgey Didge Pies are in the top 10 percentile.

      • Picture on their website looks good!

  • +5

    I like creampie

  • +8

four n twenty are the worst meat pies, not sure why they are voted sso high

    • +1

because they frequently go on sale? :P
Four N Twenty's Beef and Cheese pies are pretty good
      prettaay, prettaay, prettay goood

      ps did not vote 4&20

    • +4

Agree, don't get why they're popular, wouldn't even buy them on sale.

    • +1

I find this interesting as well. I think Four'n Twenty make possibly the worst pies that money can buy. Do people think they are good because they market more aggressively than their competition?

  • -4

I've never felt so out of place as I have while reading this thread.

It boggles my mind as to why anyone would want to buy, take home, cook and eat such a crappy meat product when there are so many more nutritious, more appetising, more economical options! Do you people not know how to cook?

I'd much rather eat a blade steak, bowl of mince, or even sausages than a meat pie.

    But to each their own.

    • +5

      I like to eat duck.

      • +1

Some like to eat scabs. What's your point?

      • I would love duck pie.

        • This idea = money

    • "But to each their own." <== There's your answer.

      • What was my question?

        • why anyone would want to buy, take home, cook and eat such a crappy meat product when there are so many more nutritious, more appetising, more economical options

          • @zonra: That's not a question. "why anyone would" has a different meaning to "why would anyone". And the response doesn't even shed any light on that either.

    • …why anyone would want to buy, take home, cook and eat such a crappy meat product…

Meat pie != crappy meat product. Crappy meat pie == crappy meat product. In fact, the purpose of this thread to to get people's opinions on what is not a crappy meat pie.

Do you people not know how to cook?

Cooking a pie is onerous. Putting a frozen pie in the oven is not.

I'd much rather eat a blade steak, bowl of mince…

But what about blade steak in a pie? Mince in a pie? Do you have a pastry aversion?

      • Meat pie != crappy meat product. Crappy meat pie == crappy meat product.

I dare say that the vast majority of meat pies would be crappy meat pies. Virtually all food mass producers aim to maximise profits. They don't use decent meat when they can get away with using textured soy protein, other fillers, only a skerrick of meat, and then pastry over it.

But what about blade steak in a pie? Mince in a pie? Do you have a pastry aversion?

A meat pie adds a lot of carbohydrate and fat to a small amount of protein. That's not nutritious. I'd rather just eat meat.

Love Herbert and Adam pies. They used to have chicken and chorizo pies. They were the best frozen pies I've ever had.

They stopped making them a while ago for some reason.

  • +2

Fray Bentos steak & kidney pies are the best :)

I know it is in a tin can, not in the freezer, still the best thou

  • +1

    Beefy’s.

Hubby has Coeliac Disease and their GF Pies and Saisage rolls are to die for. GF gravy available and chips.

They are so good, even people who don’t need GF order them.

Take home packs in store and now delivery. More options with in store takeaway packs.

Regular pies have more flavours and mixed packs, family pies etc for delivery.

They are expanding. Used to be just 3 or 4 stores around Sunshine Coast. They were always busy and getting a table was hard. Great bakery items too.

    Wouldn’t try another brand now.

I often crave a pie, but then I read the Nutrition Information Panel :(

    • Poor soul, just eat a carrot :)

    • +1

they have just done a study that shows people low in cholesterol are more likely to commit suicide. Live a little occasionally.

  • Sargents Italian Beef & Cheese. Unfortunately I've never been able to afford to try Herbert Adams yet, being twice the price and all. One day I will. I did try Four n Twenty once though, I almost threw up, I swear it was half plastic and cardboard.

  • +1

    Nothing beats a 7-11 pie :P

Haha nah but it depends on what's on special - I like four and twentys a lot more if it's half price!

  • Why there is only one choice. Herb and sarg is for me :)

  • Pies out of the oven never taste as good as from a pie warmer. Maybe I should get a pie warmer.

  • good ol Four N Twenty - 'blood ripper'

  • Maketu smoked fish.

    Ponsonby Apricot chicken and kumara.

  • Beef and pepper party pies, but nobody makes them anymore. Sad face hashtag

    No love for Boscastle pies?
My go to for a quality pie frozen pie.

    • I do love me a Bocastle pie. When the Food and Wine show is on I usually buy a 4 variety tray and my other half and I share them.

      • I wait till the end of the day when they have a sale ;)

  • Say you're out'n'about and see a half-price pie at Coles (like Mrs Macs last week). Is there a place that let's you microwave said pie?

In parks and beaches I can cook a steak on those free barbecues but I'm not experienced in converting public barbecues into ovens (or stove tops to cook rice). I suppose I could use foil but I don't know if the barbecues get hot enough to cook pies in a quick enough period of time. The only local expert in these matters doesn't post here often (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/382306).

    • +1

You could try finding a parents room, some of them have microwaves to heat up food for the kiddies. (Might be a bit ballsy as they might hit you with a wooden toy for being an interloper). BTW - why would you ruin pastry by microwaving it?

      • +1

Haha. You're a genius. I often shop at a Westfield but never ventured into one of those rooms. I'll have to check it out (after hours). "My bambino, she only eatta da pie…she isa crezy!".

I was also thinking microwaving would ruin it even if it's a brand name (since ovens even make generic ones taste good enough). But I also like the idea of spending $1.12 on a hot meal. If I have time to kill I'll try the foil oven on a barbecue method.

        • +1

Why don't you try one of the noodle bowls, or something similar; cheap meal and you don't need to worry about soggy pastry.

You can, probably, get hot water in the parents room as well.

  • +1

If I am going to have a pie at home I always make them myself. The frozen ones just can't compete with a good homemade steak and kidney pie.

  • +1

You can't beat a National Pie.

  • +3

    Where the duck is vilis?

  • Herbert Adams Lamb and Rosemary 😍

  • +1

herbert adams butter chicken pies are freaking next level.

    They microwave stupidly well too.

  • +2
