Back when I was a younger bot, I used to love mucking around with different Linux distros. Those days are long gone but I have been thinking about getting a second hand laptop to start exploring Linux again.

They often have good prices on old Elitebooks

        especially when there's a 20% off code…

      • Whatever you do, avoid those series (3-5 year old) Carbon X1's. They nearly all develop display issues. My old work had to toss heaps of them.

        • We have the Gen3 X1 carbons at work. The have a touch bar at the top of the keyboard they I regularly get them fixed. Issues with speakers and the touch bar. We have had a good run with the Yoga's though.

          • @Tamps: We had dozens lose graphics output ~2 years in. Motherboard fault. Extremely common if you google it.

I just started at a new company which uses Linux, so these will be very handy!

I put Mint on an old laptop that I found in the council clean up but I can't figure out how to adjust the screen brightness.

In my experience there will always be something dumb like that with Linux. It's a shame really.

      • Agreed, plus the laptop has a Windows XP Pro product key on the back so I will probably just reinstall that.
Not sure where to download it from though, I can't find it on Microsoft's website.

In my experience there are way more dumb things in Windows than Linux…

      Tried a different distro?

The thing I used to love doing was setting up dual boot so that I could run different distros depending on what I wanted to do. Maybe can give that a go?

    • All mine on Mint 11 to 19, Cinnamon, Mate or Xfce have used the standard keys, <FUNC><F5> to dim, F6 brighter, F7 blank and F8 for external/built-in monitor. That is only on a dell, Asus, HP and toshiba tho and two of those are the same company..

Linux is amazing compared to 10 years ago. So many good distros, excellent forums for support, most "issues" are a quick google away from resolution.

    I highly recommend:

    Beginner:
    Xubuntu

    Advanced:
    Manjaro

    1337:
    Arch

Even gaming is pretty awesome these days. Steam really loves linux and makes it easy to play a huge portion of your library.

  • The more free ebooks I collect the more likely I am to actually read one right?

By the way does anyone want to make some smoothies?

  • Don't think the first three are still free… last one is though.

    • First one expired. Last three are still free.

  • What can you do on Linux that makes you feel like you have super powers?
