Determining New Camera to Buy

Hello guys!

I am now choosing to buy a new camera, and my eyes are on Sony A6000.(with 16-50mm Lens)

The cheapest options I have found are;

$649 @ Sony Kiosk Parramatta
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/405516

$714 @ Ted's cameras (with 2 year warranty, but no delivery service)

$807 @ Digital camera warehouse (with no warranty)

(sub options - $770@ George's cameras, $749@ Camera House)

But I do not know about those stores and any opinions would be welcomed guys!!

Thanks!

  • Do it!

    • Which one do u reckon?

      • Yes!

      • Whichever one is cheapest. All the shops you list sell Australian stock, so should have the same warranty (you're mistaken about Digital camera warehouse… the warranty is 2 years)

        • yeah, DCW gives out warranty. but that is extra 100$, so makes it more expensive.

          • @alakar: Where are you seeing that?

Under the warranty tab, it states it come with a 2 year warranty from Sony, and gives the option of extending the warranty (with a 3rd party) for a further 2 years for $89.

            • @onevstheworld: arrr, yeah!
I did not see that, it makes sense now.

However, do you reckon Harvey Norman's promo is better at this stage?

              • @alakar: I'd go for the HN deal then, there's no difference other than price

  • +1

If you don't mind used items and like to have a full frame camera, Canon 6D can be bought from ebay around $800

    • I am not very good with cameras, so I think i might not be able to clarify the specs of a used one.
Which one would you reckon within the ones i mentioned?
Do u have any personal experience with Canon 6D?

      • I wouldn't recommend a 6D if you don't have any experience or interest in serious photography. It's a pro dlsr… heavy, complicated and will need expensive lenses to get the most of it.

And unless you put some effort into learning the craft, your photos will likely turn out worse than your phone's camera.

  • I know it's been asked to death but I am still struggling to choose between this and a cheap DSLR (eg D3400/3500) for family photos/holidays. I've used DSLRs on occasion and there's something magical about taking a photo with them and seeing the way it blurs the background/etc (and the shutter sound). Can a mirrorless really match that??

    • I do not know much about DSLRs though.
But I am not doing professional shoots, and I think mirrorless is enough for me at the moment.

Anyway, do you have any recommendations over the stores?

what dont you know about the stores ? Sony is the manufacturer along with the retailer, how could you possibly be concerned
Not like your buying from DWI Digital Cameras

also dont think its right your bad mouthing an Australian company (Digital Camera Warehouse) by stating they don't offer warranty.

      Direct from their website;

      Warranty and Returns Information
All cameras are guaranteed new from authorised distributors in Australia. All cameras are covered by the standard manufacturer’s Australian warranties.

Digital Camera Warehouse definitely does not deal in any 'grey market', 'direct import' or so-called 'international versions' of goods. All cameras are sourced from authorised distribution channels with original Australian warranties.

    • I mean the price differences and delievery services they offer. (+ warranty fees, which some of them add on)

      • oh I see you are a new member. Welcome friend

        • yeah, i am really new..
          Thank you!

I did not mean DCW does not gives warranty, I meant the extra charges for them.

Btw, if you have any ideas about how AmEx works, can you explain me? especially this one https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/403805

(i do not have an AmEx account)

          • @alakar: Amex offers promotions from time to time. The offer you have linked is spend $250 at HN and receive $50 back from AMEX on your card. If you don't have the card you have missed the boat for that deal as it is targeted and you need an email confirming your card is eligible

Edit not by email - "you see the offer on the website/app under your account and you accepted/saved it, then yes."

            • @PAOK11: What AmEx do you use, may I know?

What should I use, if I am starting only now?

  • I'd say buy from the Sony kiosk. It's a very smooth transaction as they are run by Sony themselves. They even register your Australian warranty on the spot for you.

    • Hey Not-James :P
My problem is I am based in Cairns, and I want to give that as a gift for someone in Sydney.

Do you have any ideas for solving that 'delievery' problem?
      Cheers

  • Sony RX100 Mark 4

  • Would recommend a6000, with a short prime it's quite compact but also good quality. If you don't mind used you can pick one up even cheaper second hand!

All those retailers look fine to me. Pretty sure Teds will deliver for $10

It is also at Harvey Norman for $697 (+$50 HN gift card) - and if you have the Amex offer it will work out better than the Sony Kiosk.

I don't know about your access to brick and mortar or shipping situation so you will probably have to work that out for yourself :p

There is also a chance that you can find a good deal in the next ebay 20% sale or something.

Having said all of this, I don't know if your budget can stretch to it but the A6300 is a pretty big step up from the A6000 (better video, newer and better sensor and JPEG engine, faster autofocus).

You will probably want to invest in a better lens eventually, though.

    • I see, I only noticed HN now,
Can you tell me how I can use my https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/403805 ?

What do you mean by access to brick and mortar? (because i do not know )

But for me (personally) i do not see vast differences between a6000 and a6300, and think the $ are not worth, that is why.

      • If you have signed up for it previously you just need to pay at Harvey norman with the registered amex. If you did not sign up previously it is unfortunately too late to.

Brick and mortar means physical store as opposed to online retailer.

        • I see, which AmEx card is the best for the deals?
          Which do u prefer?

          Thanks in advance

          • @alakar: I don't know about different amex cards. Someone else might have a better idea. Or try to search forums. Good luck!
