Recommendations for 24" - 27" Computer Monitor (and Current Deals) for General + Gaming Use?

So I'm looking to upgrade my current monitor set-up which is a 2 x 24" old TN panels with either 2 x newer monitors, or replace one with a newer (and possibly larger) monitor.

I've already had a look here but all the deals are either expired or from a long time ago.

Wondering mainly a few things:

  1. What are the best deals on monitors at the moment because I haven't been able to find any recent ones;

  2. Should I stick to TN panels, or go with an IPS/VA panel (and if so, which - I do probably more watching stuff than gaming these days, very little productivity); and

  3. Has anyone tried both 2 x 24" set up and a 24" + 27"(or larger) set up, and does the size difference cause any issues or is the larger screen size better? Especially if both are 1080p, would it look just… strange? Should I just add a 1440p 27" monitor?

Budget ideally sub-$500, I honestly don't do enough on my computer these days to justify any more.

Thanks!

Edit: Upon being reminded that there are ultra-wide options, apparently a 30" 21:9 Ultrawide has the same vertical height as a 24" (so I can add one to my slightly better existing 24" monitor), I'm considering:

https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-30-curved-219-ultrawide-7…

Pre-sale, $299 (+$20 delivery), 1080p vertical res, 75Hz, VA Panel, curved, but Kogan brand (not LG or Samsung unfortunately). (minor edit: It also has Freesync for anyone else who's interested and has an AMD video card, but not relevant for me)

Mostly it's the price-point, screen-real estate, and compatibility next to my existing 24" that I like, anything I should be worried about/haven't considered? (other than it's a Kogan model, obviously.)

Edit 2: Okay, someone want to talk me out of the Kogan? Because at that price, it's around as cheap as 2 x 24" (far worse) monitors if I'd go that route, and allows me to have more screen real estate (because I'd add this to one of my 24", instead of replacing my current with another 2 x 24"), allows widescreen gaming and productivity, is a lot newer, 75Hz. This is bloody tempting.

    • Oh dam, I didn't consider that option. That is tempting…

Caveat: even a cheapass Kogan 21:9 1440p monitor will cost you more than $500 dollars. You can get 1080p for less but with a major compromise on vertical resolution.

        • Honestly if I'm getting a 1440p monitor, I'd want vertical height more than a 24", and then I think it'd look weird next to my existing 24" (which I want to keep because I like the idea of having a secondary screen haha), and also I'm not sure my graphics card (GTX1060 6GB) could run anything at 1440p (especially ultra-wide) on decent settings, whereas an ultra-wide 1080p vertical res I think it could do almost ideally.

  • Assuming you game, or would want 3D capability for futureproofing.

That's not 3D enabled, the review widget is broken.

3D displays are outdated anyway :) it was a gimmick everyone left behind years ago, now 144hz + Freesync and Gysnc + HDR10 is what's trending.

      • You are right it is the VG278HE not the VG278Q that is 3D and they are discontinued :(

    • Oh that's tempting, but unfortunately I do nowhere near enough gaming to justify the price premium for the 1ms and 144Hz features… but that's a nice monitor.

I was in the market to buy it myself until scrimshaw pointed out it is not 3D. Always check with ozB! So are you saying I should buy 3D monitor now before they all are discontinued @scrimshaw ?

Don't buy them at all. It was tech that looked cool at the time but it just gave people headaches and you wouldn't use it for gaming either. While 3D gaming never completely went away, it was very niche because of the price premium and the fact that you had to wear some goofy glasses to use it and have a high end graphics card in order to run the games at a very high FPS.

Games nowadays don't support it and nobody creates 3d content anymore.

VR goggles like Oculus and HTC Vive is what's going ahead in the future, although again we might not see it going mainstream until they are cheap enough and don't cost over $600 for a decent quality headset.

@scrimshaw: I found a hack the other day to use playstation vr on pc, I have yet to test it though. VR is old tech that died and came back, I will keep messing about with game dev in 3d, maybe by the time it comes back, I will have made a full-length game.

    • i had this asus VG27 144hz monitor before i moved overseas, and i loved it. bought a monitor arm from jaycar for it and it was lovely. dont worry about 4k if you have 144hz 1080p

What about this if you prefer something from a known brand? I can't find a refresh rate, so it's probably 60hz.

    • Ah that looks good too. But for that wide would like a bit of curvature… and going with the Kogan. Just gotta wait now. Thanks for the suggestion though!

The above was a monitor I was looking at. Viewsonic, 144hz and 1080p (though still TN I believe).

There's also an acer monitor, virtually the same just looks a bit cooler, on PCCG. Been "out of stock" for a while though.

Not totally sure those'd be what you're looking for, but pretty cheap 144hz screens if you were looking for em.

Oooh, that is a fairly cheap price for those specs. But yeah, unfortunately not doing enough gaming to justify paying for those specs haha. Thanks for the heads-up!

    Just saw this deal here.

    Might be worth a look.

Hahaha - thanks for the heads up but I'm HighandDry in that post. It is a nice monitor though, especially at that price but it doesn't have the VESA mounting that I want/need for my dual monitor set up. I've decided to go with the Kogan 30" ultrawide here which from its specs I'm almost sure is also an LG panel.
