Please Help Me to Find ALDI Bike - Performance 29er - for My Son's 21st Birthday Present

I am looking to buy my son a basic MTB to get into cycling. I have seen the Aldi bike mentioned in the forums and in other reviews as a good intro bike. They went on sale last month and I am unable to find any locally (Newcastle/Hunter). I tried the call centre and apparently there are none in the entire state of NSW. I am not overly convinced of this.

So… are there any super sleuths who could search and find one of these bikes please? Preferably Newcastle, Central Coast, Wollongong, or Sydney.

Alternatively, is anyone selling a basic MTB (size = Large) at a reasonable price?

Any help appreciated.

  • ALDI does generally have very low stock on hand of their bigger items - keeps their inventory costs down.

There's this thread; by all accounts the actual bike that's the subject of the deal isn't that great, but good discussion on what are good MTBs. Unless you came from that one off of tezza's comment haha.

What's "a reasonable price" in your opinion? Because bikes can get real expensive real fast.

    • Thanks for that HighAndDry. And yep, I did look at that thread and decided to try to find the Aldi one. :-)

In terms of pricing (bcse I know that they escalate to stupid pricing real fast) I guess that I am thinking up to $500.

      Cheers mate.

I'm no biking expert (much more of a… Google expert haha)

From that list though and reading anecdotally, can't go wrong with the Giant, Merida or the Reid ones, though the Reid one is out of stock on their website here. They are offering free shipping though, and their $350 model is available. Again, no biking expert but I see a lot of Shimano parts plus Tektro brakes.

Alternatively, 99 Bikes has a few of the other listed models on that list available including the Apollo Aspire 20, and other Norco, Giant, and Merida bikes (in case it needs to be said though, don't pay any attention to "$X off from RRP!"). Those brands have a reputation to protect so, pricing aside, I'd be confident going with any of those models.

These are all good starting options- just keep in mind my post below about servicing. These online orders obviously won't have free servicing so your savings may disappear quickly. You can get Apollo 20 locally for 500, maybe less if you ask if they will match.

I'm not worried either way what you do or where you buy from- just want you to be informed bikes aren't usually a one time upfront purchase.

Yup, $484 from 99 Bikes here if OP can find a shop near him. Good points about servicing and lifetime costs, I assume there's far more to bike ownership and buying decision than I'm aware of =D.

I used to work in a bike shop in the hunter. Won't say which one as it's been a long time since I worked there.

For 500 you can pick up an entry level MTB pretty easily. Maybe not 29" but for an intro bike it really won't matter.
If you or your son know about bikes and how to service them then an aldi option might be OK for you.
If you don't, then you won't get much love from bike shops if/when you need a service. A couple I know do 6 months free servicing and you could probably ask and get 12 depending on the store.

Long term I would suggest an aldi bike would actually cost more if you have to start paying for services and parts if they break.

    • You are right. Much to weigh up. I am trying to balance it with whether he will really get into it. :-(

The Aldi 29er is an excellent bike for the money. I'd say there would be a few around, as I remember the last time they were offered some people got them discounted a couple months after. Definitely worth keeping an eye out for one, even second hand.

A bit far to go, but they had 2 of them in the Canberra Airport Aldi about a week ago when I was there

    • Might be a good ride to break it in!

If you can't find one at Aldi, you can buy the same bike here for $425: https://www.bicyclesonline.com.au/2018-boa-trail-29er-mounta…
    Polygon make the Aldi bikes.

  • Aldi Windsor has one bike left discounted with $100 off rrp as seen yesterday. I would ring before attending though.
