Neutrogena SPF 50 Hydro Boost Water Gel Lotion 88ml $16.99 $7.65 (SOLD OUT ONLINE - try your local store)

I've been reading good things about this newly launched sunscreen that supposed to be really light-weight and works well on the face. Besides a very high SPF (broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection), it contains hyaluronic acid which is good for keeping skin hydrated. Reviewers say that it absorbs well, works well under make-up, but to keep away from the eyes as it stings, and also, sensitive skin may not react well to it as it does contain alcohol and is scented. You can use this on the body as well.

I've been eyeing this since launch and this is the cheapest price so far.

Update 5pm: New catalogue for Coles just came out, it will be $7.50 at Coles from Wednesday

1/2 Price RRP Entire Maybelline Fit Me Range

  • Maybelline recently increased their FitMe Matte and Poreless Foundation $19.95 $9 shade range to 40 shades which is almost unheard of for a pharmacy brand available in Australia. This foundation is suitable for normal to oiler skin types and is well-established in the market as a top-performing 'drugstore' foundation.

Love the fit me concealer! prefer it to my Nars one :D

    • Cool! Good to know :)

Hydro Boost sounds awesome, never knew it existed.

It's a cosmetic like all moisterisers.

It isn't adding water to skin or doing anything to prevent aging other than blocking UV light.

      • I shouldn’t even bother replying to this, but what’s one the biggest external causes of ageing? Yes, UV light.

The Hydro Boost sunscreen reviews well, at least in terms of feel:
    https://theinventory.com/this-japanese-sunscreen-is-the-firs…

However, Neutrogena recently introduced its own knock-off called Hydro Boost, and I came away pretty impressed after trying it at the beach. It felt a little heavier than the Biore, and probably took one or two more rubs to absorb into my skin, but it was still better than basically every other sunscreen out there.

oh yeah, I was wondering how this compares to Biore one. I LOVE the Biore one. Makes me want to apply it on every day rather then just when I'm going to the beach. It feels refreshing rather than sticky!

      • Makes me want to apply it on every day

Most aging is caused UV light.

        • I know, but the stickiness of sunscreen really puts me off :( got sunspots now, so I have to do it. But at least this one makes it more appealing :)

  • It's out of stock online :( Thanks for the tip though, I'll keep an eye out for it. The Hydroboost gel moisturiser is the only moisturiser I've ever found that doesn't make my oily skin greasier. I hate how sunscreen feels (greasy and ick!) but I am trying to be good and use it so this sounds like it has potential.

Do you have a tip for eye area sunscreen?

    • Yeah I was just about to put in an online order and noticed that it was out of stock (deal description updated).

I have never bought/used a separate sunscreen for the eyes, I've always just used face sunscreen for the whole face (applying around face first, and just sweep what's left on my hands gently across the eyes once). I figured that I would be wearing shades in the sun anyway. I was going to take a chance with this product and use it for the body if it doesn't work out for the face.

    • Do you have a tip for eye area sunscreen?

Sunglasses, ones with big oversized lenses 😎

    • Do you have a tip for eye area sunscreen?

Dab sunscreen on very, very gently. Wiping or rubbing the skin around the eyes is not recommended if you want to remain youthful looking.

  • I've been told that alcohol in skincare is bad for your skin.

    • It depends on the type of alcohol and the amount. For the motivated, here's an article about alcohol in skin care.

Neutrogena Australia's website does not list ingredients for this sunscreen, and I'm not sure if this product is the same formula as the one in the US, but you can check the ingredients list for the US version. If the alcohol is listed towards the end of the ingredients list I'm personally not too worried.

Japanese sunscreens tend to have some alcohol as well which is why the texture is so light.

  • Can you use hydroboost as a daily face moisturiser?

    • +1

You could, but it's not an all-rounder in my opinion, it doesn't have any good active ingredients apart from hyaluronic acid, and most of the formula is focused on being a good sunscreen. I would layer this on top of your regular moisturiser (that hopefully has some good stuff). And for most days you wouldn't need SPF 50 unless you are outdoors for most of the day.

Edit: To clarify, I think everyone should wear SPF every day, but it doesn't have to be as high as SPF 50 (though there's no harm in doing so).

      • +1

Agree. I think spf 15 during winter would suffice. Spf30 for day to day in summer. Spf50 is more for beach. But technically you're supposed to reapply every 2 or so hours anyways….

      • +1

Natio for Men SPF30 moisturiser is a great year-round option, though it doesn't say on the container how often to reapply it.

  • Moocher, I am loving how knowledgeable you are about all this!!

    • I just google actually :P There's so much information on the internet.

  • +4

Looks like there's no need to panic to get the sunscreen, it's going to be $7.50 at Coles on Wednesday :P

Ingredient list for those interested. esp if you are avoiding skincare products with high alcohol content (likely why it's less greasy compared to others). Also note that hyaluronic acid is at the bottom of the list so its presence is only for marketing purposes.

Active: Avobenzone 2.7%, Homosalate 9%, Octisalate 5%, Octocrylene 9%, Oxybenzone 4.5%. Inactive: Water, Glycerin, Alcohol Denat., Caprylyl Methicone, Diisopropyl Adipate, Silica, Dicaprylyl Carbonate, Dimethicone, Polyurethane-62, Phenoxyethanol, Hydroxyacetophenone, Pentylene Glycol, Aluminum Starch Octenylsuccinate, Sodium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/VP Crosspolymer, Acrylates/Dimethicone Copolymer, Glyceryl Stearate, Fragrance, Chlorphenesin, Menthyl Lactate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Disodium EDTA, Trideceth-6, Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid, Sodium Hydroxide, Violet 2, Blue 1

    • Ooh thanks, it looks different from the US version!

      • +1

I think they are all the same worldwide. The ingredient list on the US site is incorrect as it's clearly for a facial cleanser - it contains Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate which are all surfactants, and have no mention of sunscreen ingredients.

        • You're absolutely right!

will sunscreen be the new asbestos?

  • I just looked at their website and have noticed that many of their products have suddenly risen in price. For example, ive been buying their Optifast Vanilla Shakes (18 pk) for $49.99 for the past year off and on. I went to grab some using a 10% off code but the price has gone up to $59.99 WTF ?

    • I just looked at their website and have noticed that many of their products have suddenly risen in price.

      How many other products?

The sunscreen was ~$10 last night. It dropped to $8.49 today when this 10% sale started.

Chemist warehouse had a catalogue sale that finished end of Sunday. That's probably why the prices went up on Monday.

I picked up some of the sunscreen from Coles today and the texture is good. Feels nice and smooth on my face, pretty much doesn't feel like I am wearing sunscreen to the touch. The scent is quite strong (I am extremely smell sensitive though, much more than normal) so I hope I can get used to that. Overall it seems like great value.

Thanks for the tips moocher :)

    • +1

Thanks so much for the feedback! Yeah a few reviewers have commented on the smell too :/ Glad that at least the texture is pleasant.
