A true Ozbargainer lets the wind dry the hair, thus saving on hairdryers, electricity and enabling more time for bargain hunting.

A true Ozbargainer lets the wind dry the hair,

        A true Ozbargainer doesn't wash.

    • I thought these were headphones that suck my brain out…

      No it doesn't.

A lot of technology goes into that 'hot air' and in fact the technology used in Dyson (which I won't claim to understand) means it somehow uses less power and less heat than a $50 hair dryer and yet for someone with my hair type can take 5-10 minutes to make perfectly straight instead of 30 and being left with a frizzy mess. It also has temperature sensors which prevent hair from being burned and damaged due to excessive heat. The air "pressure" i suppose you could call it is much higher even with less power, and that causes the hair folicle to sit flatter and produces a much smoother, glossier and straighter finish. The motor is in the handle which makes it a lot more comfortable to hold and will prevent sore wrists. I've seen a few people say they could -only- use this comfortable due to weak arm/wrist strength.

Not everyone needs a dryer like this, but for someone like me who has long curly hair and have dealt with many terrible non-salon quality dyers I can definitely understand why people would want this. I am extremely happy with my $200 parlux which is the best value imo if you want something reliable and very good, but the lessened drying time and lack of damage makes this appeal to people who spend a lot of time on their hair.

People who do not have a lot of hair or its naturally thin/straight would not appreciate it as they wouldn't get to use it to it's full potential.

There's an abundance of reviews out there that explain peoples experiences of using a dryer like the dyson or parlux vs their cheap dryer.

@Elision: My wife loves $30 bucks PHILPHS HPS920

        • @Elision: I too thought this would be basically the same as a normal hair dryer but 10 times more money, thanks for the small lesson :)

        • @Elision: when you spend $400+ on a device that puts out hot air you need to love it otherwise you feel foolish for spending so much.

        • @MikeKulls: not if you get it as a gift!

        • @MikeKulls: So you're not talking about this one at $399 then.

        • +1

          @RandomFox:

No problem! I was skeptical before I paid $200 for my Parlux but I was so sick of spending so long drying my hair and just bit the bullet. It was one of those "why the hell did I wait so long" moments. A lot of people probably think theirs is fine until they discover what else is out there.

I will say though that if people aren't actually blow waving their hair (using a barrel brush with vents in it) in conjunction with the dryer then they may never understand the real difference because discovering that those exist was another one of those "life changing" moments haha.

        • @Maloo: I was assuming this thing is normally even more ridiculously expensive than $399.

        • @Elision: Sounds like a no brainer for Salons or professionals in the industry, The time savings alone would pay for it alone high end-ish salon $70 for a wash and blow-dry could be the difference in getting a few more clients through the door, more money in the bank.

As for me and my couple of inches of hair I'll stick with the towel, or sun dry in summer but I can definitely see the positives for those that would benefit.

Including those blokes that moan their missus spends too much time getting ready to go out you might have just been given the explanation for some of it.

        • +26

I have not, but I know that my $200 Parlux is WAY better than a $50 one. I've used multiple sub $100 hairdryers and they would all take over 30 minutes to dry my long curly hair and would still make it a frizzy mess that needed to be straightened after for an additional 15 minutes. My Parlux took the time down to 10 minutes and is perfectly smooth and straight. That saves a lot of time when it's something you do often. I won't say I understand the technology but there's that ionic technology crap that supposedly helps stop it from being frizzy or as dry and for me the difference was like night and day. Heat and power make a huge difference as well.

I don't know what sort of hair this persons partner has but if you have thin fairly straight hair or do not blow wave your hair and just dry it and chuck it up you would not really appreciate the difference between them. There is a reason many salons use them (Parlux)

Dyson is not for everyone, but hair drying time can take 5 minutes for amazingly straight hair when you know what you're doing, and is about half the time it takes to use than my $200 one. It also has temperature sensors that prevent your hair from burning,

I'm not saying that everyone should buy a Dyson (i'm a parlux fangirl for price vs quality and they're a hair stylist favourite found in many salons) but, they are NOT the same quality and will not give you the same performance as a $50 hair dryer.

          • @Elision: Got the Dyson, and it's OK. About the only thing really going for it, is less noise and a nice design. Drying speed is better on my other dryer.

        • +17

My wife is a professional hair & makeup artist. She knows lots of other pro's. They all unanimously believe the Dyson is the best. These people use them every day of the week.

The notion that a cheap nasty $50 one is better, and that you know more than working professionals is hilarious.

        • -1

@Elision: But what keeps it straight? Just the speed from 30 to 10min?

        • +2

@gavincato: Then there's this, which is also hilarious.

But hilarious in the sense that the guy doing the review actually knows what he's taking about. Like, an actual expert.

          Warning: he swears a lot.

@Elision: I had a Parlux 3200, total PoS. I then bought a 2400w ionising remington for $80… sooooo good Mrs bought one too. I even contacted Viviana Lazzaroni <[email protected]> to ensure I didn't have a fake Parlux bcos it was so crap.

ONLY review y'all need for the Dyson; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-vJxez9UF8

        • +5

I wouldn't pay $400 for a hair dryer either, but I've no qualms about someone else wanting to do it. Why bother telling others what they should think before buying? :-)

Surely they're purchasing because the price is justified for them?

        • +1

          @raybies:

Glad you're happy with your cheaper one. I have the Parlux 3800 eco friendly super compact and it's the one I find the most in Salons.

My friend actually used one for like 2 years before she realised how the power levels worked on the thing though, she'd been using it on low power or something because she thought the bottom switch was for cold air and not power level and never turned it up higher than that.. do you think it's possible you did the same? I just can't imagine how someone could think it was a piece of shit. shrug

        • @Elision: I would love one but I can't justify one right now. I still have a Sunbeam that cost about $50 at the time and is ok. I'd planned to buy a Parlux but now want a Dyson.

        • @ladybug1: the Parlux are alright although my hairdresser said she would like to buy a dyson!

        • +1

@kale chips suck: Was wondering when this would come up. But but hair professionals know better! Amirite?

        • +1

@kale chips suck: That was both equal parts "get out of here,f@%ing hilarious" and "STOP NOOOOOO" when he takes the drier apart and starts burning bits of it.I don't know what this guy's job is,but there is either a special place in Dyson for him OR NASA.And to paraphrase slightly what someone said in the comments "i spent (or wasted, glass half empty types) 45 minutes watching a video on a f@%ing hairdryer…and i still thought it was time well spent".

        • @Elision: Dude… in my spare time I assemble eurorack modular synthesizers, if there's one attribute about me which is recognised, is my ability w/ buttons, levers, switches, patches and reverse engineering.
It was crap at getting my hair dry fast, maybe styling and temp. control were better but I wash my hair 2x a day and I need fast w/ good feeling hair.

        • @raybies: Thanks, raybies - haven't come across AvE before - looks to be a great channel!

        • @plague69:

So when you want your hair to be straight when it's not naturally like that, you need to use a dryer in conjunction with a barrel brush which you put underneath the hair and aim the dryer on top of it, this helps to keep the hair flat and taught when drying as well as distributes the heat more. The expensive dryers (parlux/dyson) have much more concentrated air pressure than cheaper ones, so it helps to blow the hair straight down and keep it down, I feel like their ability to "compress" the hair and dry very fast is their biggest benefit as it never gets a chance to fly outwards and go frizzy. There is also ionic technology in them, it's complicated to me but basically it's meant to prevent static and frizz. The thing Dyson has which sets it apart from other high end dryers is a chip inside which constantly reads the temperature and fluctuates accordingly so you lessen the damage caused by excessive heat, in the long run this will keep hair straighter by preventing damage that leads to snapped off hair/flyaways/frizz and will naturally sit flatter because it's healthy.

Also after drying your hair straight, you use the cold function on the dryer to "set" the style, much like how things that are warm are pliable and when dry are hard, it's the same sort of thing. With my hair it will never be perfectly straight the next day as I lay down on it and it goes weird when I sleep but it's still very smooth with just a little wave to some parts, cheap dryers turn into a ball of kinky fluffy mess when I wake up!

Some of those tips are relevant to all dryers, but the professional ones just do it better. Sorry that's a bit of a rant but I hope it kind of answered your question..

        • @raybies:

Just ruling it out in case. Maybe you got a dud, or it was normal and just doesn't work with your hair for some reason. Oh well, at least you found a cheap one that works well for you I guess?

        • @Elision: Fitness First use Parlux, and their not great either. Sure they're better than the ones you get in hotels, but compared to the remington I use, their crap.

        • @dm01: one of my favourite channels for tools… discovered it when investigating Makita impact drivers last year.

        • @Elision:

I have straightish fine hair and the reason why I use a Parlux as opposed to a cheaper dryer is not the dry time, but that fine hair tends to frizz and have flyaways. The Parlux helps to prevent this better than any expensive styling product I have tried.

        • @raybies: Seems to have some interesting life advice as well - tools plus philosophy! :)

    • +9

lol $50, my $20 hairdryer works just aswell as your $50 one!

      • My Phillips from 1995 still working. It was less than $20 back in those days. Button fell off a few times, just glued it back on. It'll be hard for something with so much electronics to last long, no matter how well they are made.

Dries okay. Just make sure your environment is not super humid (or bathroom right after a shower)

      • I dry my hair with free napkins from the local coffee shop. Blow me Dyson.

    • +1

If you are a guy with short hair, then it doesn't make a big different for you.

One thing you also need to aware is the noise from the $50 is a lot louder than Dyson.

    • Imagine for a moment we were discussing a product you knew a lot about. Is there a dramatic difference between the brand’s model you think is the best and the throw-away version? Now imagine that applies to most product and kapow!! Here we are, $400 hairdryers are considered a bargain.

  • So pissed abt missing the boo boo deal with the Professional version :(

  • +9

Dyson is the Apple of things that blow and suck. High price, lots of "design", fancy words like "digital motor" (most would just call it brushless), but ultimately works about as well as things half the price

    • +2

Not to mention that you'll always be looked down on by the people who buy the 23.75 karat gold version.

    • -1

Amen to that. Check out the reviews online. Pretty sure you could find a better dryer for less than $200.

    • Also, like Apple, they are designed to be replaced every 2 years. Ours died just outside warranty.

      • +1

I had the same with my Dyson upright. $700 on a vacuum and only a 2 year warranty, called Dyson and they wouldn't budge. Elsewhere in the world gets 5 years for same vac. Bought a new motor off eBay for $30 or so, much nicer build quality than the original dyson motor oddly. My handheld dyson battery is also dead, no wonder they only make battery vacs now, they plan to clean up on battery replacements.

        • Yep, and mine was an absolute pos while I had it. Absolutely beyond me how Dyson have convinced people they make good products. It would get stuck sucking up a grape.

        • It wouldn't surprise me if they use batter quality parts in the parts of the world where they offer 5 year warranty

Refuse to spend over $200 for a hairdryer. They havent reinvented sh@t

    • +7

No one forces you to buy. Some may happy with a 95 corolla and say Toyota haven't reinvented shit and keep driving it.

      • +1

No one forces you to buy. Some may happy with a 95 corolla and say Toyota haven't reinvented shit and keep driving it.

The OP wasn't saying someone is forcing them to buy, but just that they wouldn't buy.

I think that the analogy of a 95 corolla isn't all that appropriate, as in the differences between a $50 philips dryer and a $400 dyson dryer are not THAT much. I also don't think that everyone refusing to shell out $400 on a hair dryer is going to be driving around in a 95 corolla.

      • A better comparison is a Fairlane compared to a falcon. they add stuff worth a few thousand and charge an extra $40k. The guy who paid it insists he got great value and it makes so much difference when in reality it is just to show off wealth

  • Would love to get the code, PM me please, thanks
