I just bought the 5 for $399 from the deal posted last week and heavily considering refunding….

The screen is unbearable - colour is so washed out and contrast is bad. I understand that it uses a reflective screen to save battery, but it's just so bad to look at….

It has no touchscreen, I mean seriously!?!

With all the deals popping up on the new Samsung Galaxy watch i can't help but think that it's just a better, more well rounded buy which has all the features the Garmin has and plenty more.

Guess I just don't get the Garmin hype. Other than having better battery life (with a significant compromise imo) it has nothing on the Samsung (again, imo).

    • Instead of just negging me how about trying to explain to me why the Garmin is a better pick?

I'm open minded and willing to have a healthy discussion.

Google DC Rainmaker and his Fenix 5 review. For a do-it-all GPS watch that captures a rediculous number of metrics, nothing else comes close. The Garmin Fenix series should be considered fitness computers first and smartwatches second.

        Edit - Here's the link: https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2017/03/garmin-fenix5-5s-5x-revi…

You realise Garmin watches is mostly for fitness tracking right?

        You're comparing different products.

        • I understand that. But objectively the Galaxy watch has tons of fitness tracking no?

        • +6

@mg_k: Probably, I don't know. But you're missing the point. You're in the market for a smartwatch - something you can play with whilst bored in meetings - so buy the Apple/Android watch. If you do long course triathlons, skiing, open water swims, ultramarathons, hikiing, kayaking, cycling… You get the point… The Fenix 5 natively supports capture of data for it. You're not Garmin's target customer.

          @salamandersushi:

I wanted one for hiking and fitness tracking plus more. Even so I can't see how the Samsung is worse in those area?

Bottom line - I want a well rounded watch that does most things well, and the Samsung seems to fit the bill better for less money.

        • +5

@mg_k: So buy the Samsung. The issue here is you've provided a negative review on a product without (obviously) doing any research on it. I don't work for Garmin but currently use 5 of their products, aside from the long list of their products I've previously owned over the years. I'd hate for your ill educated opinion to turn a potential purchaser away from buying a Garmin.

What's important for Fitness trackers is the type of data and the accuracy.

The issues in the vids would be deal breaker for fitness enthusiast.

If you're comparing it to a Galaxy watch then you're not Garmin's target audience.

I've had my Fenix 3HR Saphire for, sheesh, must be a few years - I've put it through hell. Countless marathons, trail runs, ultra trails, open water swims, cycling, hiking where it's helped me when I took a turn off trail and had no mobile reception. I can run the GPS in several modes so it'll last an ultra trail event of close to 20 hours with juice to spare. I've had it scrape up against rock faces, in constant salt water and it still looks brand new.

After all this the battery is as good as the day I got it. The condition as good as the day I got it. And the metrics are amazing, recovery runs covered, interval training covered, multi sport events covered, pacing, race estimation, recovery, V02Max, cadence, stride length blah blah blah. When I have had to adapt my running style to cater for recurring injuries it gave me the feedback and data I needed.

Oh, and that was the model before the 5. So that's without all of the improvements it brought along.

Fenix watches are worth the money if you need a serious and seriously rugged multisport fitness watch. If you want a smart watch that will track your weekend Parkrun, you aren't the target market.

        • Thanks the-mal. I guess I'm not as hardcore as you and probably not the target audience then.

    • +3

why on earth did you buy it then?

      • I want a watch for fitness and when I go hiking.

Like I've said above the Samsung has tons of features, it probably maps and tracks as well as the Garmin, but loaded with tons of other smart features for less money.

        What's not to like?

    • +11

So you bought an expensive electronic gadet and didn't even research it before buying to see it does not have a touchscreen?

Fenix5 is a great watch for what it does. Seems you aren't the right user

      • I'm not doubting that it's a great watch for what it does, however from all the researches the Samsung can do what Garmin does just as well if not better and plenty more?

        • +5

The Samsung can't even get close to touching the pro feature set for those who are the target buyers, the Samsung is like a toy compared and you said you researched?

…I think you know all this and are trying to astroturf here.

        • The samsung isn't waterproof so won't track or be able to be used near water (a samsung rep even said not to shower with it as water ingression is likely).

Fenix series wont have touchscreens because that's not there target market, they want buttons so they can use it during sport (eg,swim, bike).

If you were hiking you should automatically lean towards the fenix for battery life alone. in my experience I could get 3 weeks out of my fenix 5 but only 2 days out of the s3 (a 1hr run for instance would chew 40% which is crazy). I haven't had any experience with the galaxy watch yet so that could be different

        • @Bomber-man:

The new Samsung Galaxy is absolutely water proof with ATM 5 rating. You can go swimming with it.

Samsung has all the buttons, moreover the bezal turns for extra controls.

Garmin having no touchscreen because "it isn't for its target audience" is such a weak argument and merely an excuse.

Other than battery life (with huge compromise on screen quality) it's tough to think why the Garmin is the better overall buy for the majority.

        • Yes with the new galaxy watch you can. Just not for more than an hour…not in waves…not surfing…not cliff jumping, diving etc you get my point.

Garmin's do have touch screens…just not in the fenix.

I'm not trying to hate on it I plan to get a galaxy but they are aimed at different people.

        • @mg_k:

Dude just gave up already with the Samsung comments, your obviously not getting the point, this is ozbargain not product review

    • If your screen is that bad perhaps it’s faulty. I’ve used a handful of smart watches, none have even close to the fitness metrics available with the Garmin range. The 10 day battery life is fantastic and notifications work flawlessly. Great product.

    • vivoactive 3 has touchscreen which sucks too as most things about garmin watches which are actually trackers and not watches :)

    • Battery life. Big difference when you have to charge it every 3 or 4 days compared to 7 or 8 days

    • Having said that new galaxy watch is interesting. As you said it's got lots of features so I can see how that is appealing. I for one don't mind if they have screen like fenix without touchscreen (try to touch the screen while running or swimming is a nightmate) to expand the battery life to 10 days I would probably buy it

That's a lot to pay to inaccurately measure yourself.
