  • Contradiction!! is it home premium or starter?

    • +2

"Windows 7 Home Premium starter" what the hell. The page says model# K42F-VX312V, which according to JB Hifi comes with Home Premium.

Are there better laptops out there for a similar price?

    • this is only good because its a 14 inch

  • -8

$999 can u get u core i7 which quadruples the power

    • +2

Spending nearly 70% more gets you a better laptop? That's amazing.

    • Do note too that i3's are still dual core processors (http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=47663), so it's only double the power. Less if you consider that many programs don't make use of 2+ cores very well so it may work out as less than 2x 'faster'.

    • Here's a review of the i3 540 beating a two i7's : http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/943540-i3-vs-i7-gaming-p…

To be fair it's overclocked to 4.2ghz, so a laptop would expect lower performance, the i3 still holds up against an i7.

I just bought one from JB HIFI over the weekend, same specs but with 500 gig hard drive for $599. The sticker price was $632.

  • +2

the lenovo deals over the weekend were better

  • +6

personally catch of the day is the last place id buy a laptop from especially when u can get it same or cheaper price at a local store ie msy

  • Might as well not bother posting COTD on the main site - COTD belongs in the forums at best.

I won't neg this "deal" tho just cos its COTD :P

    • +1

good, because it would probably just get revoked.

  • Pretty nice deal, might have a look in JB-HIFI after readin saw1971's post.

This is a 14" screen, which seems to be rare these days. Everything is bloody ~15.4", unless you get a netbook. 13.3" lappy's were popular a few years back, what happened to those.
I'm using a 12.1"W, 14" is my max size i'm willing to get.

I was also confused (and suspicious) about the Win7 HP Starter.?

I can't see this laptop on MSY. What one are you referring to?

    • It is not Win HP Starter, there's no such edition.

Windows 7 Starter is only available for netbooks.

      • It actually says "netbook" on the site. It's as if they've only put starter on it and called it a netbook.

curious why no one has neged it? it is NOT a DEAL, even though it is asus.

    • why isnt it a deal?

      • -1

for those neg me, can you read?
        14inch?!
        2GB ram?!
        i3?!

you can get one half year ago for the same price. may not be asus, probably a lenova or acer or other brands. but still quite good.

        read this!

then you shouldve stated your reasons in your original post, thats why you were negged

That means nothing. Is it available now? Was it a one off deal? Do you have a link or proof that that particular deal is widely available?

Give me an Asus over a Lenovo or Acer anyday!

The only 14" Asus at JB that I can find is $684:

It's a decent deal because it's 14". 13.3' and 14' are bloody hard to find at a reasonable price.

  • -4

Ozhunter, what are you, a COTD rep ? dude, just do a quick search on laptop here, you will get the answer that it isnt a deal

    • +3

No, but they could link or say why it isn't a deal. That is why you have to comment before voting neg, and not just neg.

TBH, the price seems fairly mediocre for a Core i3 notebook with IGP. And it only has 2GB of RAM.

Then again it is an ASUS brand at 14 inches and not an eMachine we've seen in the past for $500.

    There is a K42F ASUS with a faster 2.4ghz Core i3 on Penta.com.au for $668.
    http://penta.com.au/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=6…

    • Good luck getting it from Penta though. It could be just my bad luck, but I've enquired about multiple notebook models in the past only to get the 'out of stock' response (or worse still, no response at all).

      • totally agree penta are a joke

    • There is a K42F ASUS with a faster 2.4ghz Core i3 on Penta.com.au for $668.

      Stock Level: Discontinue

Yeah, I wouldn't buy from Penta, they normally don't hold stock, usually direct drop-ship to customer.

  • DVD drive? Guessing not

    • Yes it's got DVD burner.

It's an ok deal but not a bargain. I bought a much higher model of this (I believe the case is the same though) for $798 6 months ago

  • No Bluetooth and no 3G. I'm out!

    • …no 3G. I’m out!

      lol
