These are China Mobile prepaid SIM cards. If 3G (up to 384kB/s but some reports getting up to 768kB/s) is OK to you, it would be much better to buy from China Mobile directly. The SIM to order is this one - (https://www.hk.chinamobile.com/en/corporate_information/Prep…), which costs HK$38 (about A$6.8 at today's rates) if ordered online. Once ordered you can choose to pick it up at a China Mobile branch within HK that suits you, and there is one in the airport.

The SIM has a face value of HK$48 of which HK$2 is deducted immediately on first use. If 3G is what you want you should immediately activate the "Lite Data Package" which takes HK$30 off your balance. This provides unlimited 3G data for 10 days. In the past as a promotion the first 10 days would be free which means you actually get 20 days of 3G access (the $30 is only deducted on day 10). Not sure if this is still the case or not.

You will still have HK$16 left on the card for calls ($0.05/min to $0.12/min for off-peak/peak) and text. Or you can top up the card with HK$20 and get another 10 days of unlimited 3G data.

While Klook may not be the best in 3G SIMs, I find them to provide excellent prices for the HK airport train to the city.

You sound like you know a lot about Sim cards in China. Any hot tips for data in the mainland?

      • I learnt about the CM SIMs and klook from a trip thru HK early this year. I haven't visited China for many years so don't have any real tips. Having said that I notice the CM SIM I mentioned, and a few others on the CM site, appears to work in China too (referred to as 1-card-2-numbers). Given that CM is also one of the main telcos in China, maybe that can be considered, provided that you go thru HK to pick up the SIM?

      • There's another sim for app $98 HKD that allows roaming in mainland China as well local HK data. (1GB allowance from memory) That means, no need to get blocked by the Great Wall of China on apps such as whatsapp. (Works on all roaming sims).

    • Is the 3G fast enough?

  • what sim cards do people use for a month in Europe

  • How does this work, if I go to Hong Kong for 3 weeks , do I book 3? or do i book one and ask them to top up?

Also do I need to return the sim?
